The nu rebellion, gone, its like 5 people now. Snoke? Dead. Who is Rei? Lol no one. Was anyone really interested to find out that Rei was a skywalker, or a solo, or a fett, or a mothma or one of the other three characters from the OT with a last name spoken on screen? ZOMG bros! What if our protagonist was destined by fate to be THE CHOSEN ONE! And with all that being said, production wise I feel like TLJ was the only one of the sequels that looked and felt like it existed in the same universe as star wars. The first movie has too much of JJ's boring dull iPod sensibility and everything looked too much like his star trek movies (which were too sterile and over-lit for even trek).
When ever RLM, who hate the prequels, praise the prequels for its characters, action and plot, then you gotta admit it's good.Even the biggest SW haters like it.

The OT was so popular and rich with world building specifically because they weren't trying to make a massive franchise, just a story that felt like it was just a single individual story in a massive setting. The movies didn't need to nudge the audience when Boba Fett came on the screen, vader didn't need to have some kind of mysterious dialogue hinting that he was the son of Gulp Shitto IV's emperor of the umaguma's from tranfabulon 9. It was just a cool character design (an unused storm trooper concept), they had him stand in a lineup of weird alien bounty hunters, and vader throws him a line about needing the body intact so NO DISINTEGRATION. None of that information is important to the plot, it isn't lampshaded, its just a cool looking dude with another cool looking dude stating that this guy has a reputation for fucking people up badly enough that even vader asks him to tone it down. From there you can imagine all kinds of cool scenarios. When Butthole eyes pulls out a linchpin of the plot and then looks dead in the eyes of the audience and says "WOULDN'T YOU LIKE TO KNOW!?!" and then moves on, its not a plot hook, its spitting in the face of the audience with bad screenwriting that should have never made it past the first draft. You can start ANH in media res, all the important information is sold to you visually without needing a word of dialogue (underdog good guys fighting evil space nazi's). But then they spend a trilogy with that empire being defeated. the prequels show you where that evil empire came to be. But then the sequels start off with the evil empire somehow back and stronger than ever and no explanation is ever given. They're just back with a new name and the expectation that you do your homework for the biggest pop culture franchise that doesn't need it
