It is amazing just how much this movie obliterated the Star Wars brand. It can never recover. There has been no fan re-evaluation, no box office comeback for the franchise, nothing. It just came out, destroyed the most beloved IP in America, and then everyone slowly stopped caring about it. The next movie made less than half of what The Force Awakens made.
>most beloved IP in America
>>223328055>starslopgrow up
>>223328087Yeah, it was. By far. Star Wars is practically our state religion. You hear politicians make dark side vs. Jedi comparisons all the time. By revenue, Star Wars was the biggest franchise here. Who are you kidding?
>popular = belovedSomebody never outgrew high school
>and he was a good friend.
>>223328055It was the whole trilogy. If just that film was weak and the other two good, people would have forgiven it and bought the box set.
The Last Jedi reviews are a genre of their own, this shit is heroic, like the Jap remnants in the pacific after ww2
How does he keep getting away with it?
>>223328055>The next movie made less than half of what The Force Awakens made.Because the next movie was twice as bad as TLJ. I lay most of the blame on Rise of Skywalker, that shit was ridiculous.
>>223328087so you gonna tell us which ip is actually the most loved in america with your brown hands?
>>223328055>It can never recoverI like to imagine disney execs crying over their inability to do anything to fix the franchise while a lone young intern is completely ignored as he gently suggests doing literally anything positive with Luke Skywalker>if only there was SOMETHING, I mean ANYTHING ew could do to get the fans back and save star wars!>...y-you could make a film where Mark Hamill comes back as Luke and saves some people while wielding a lightsaber. Like that one episode that people really liked...>ANYTHING, we would do LITERALLY ANYTHING to try and save star wars!
>>223328055I remember having a talk with my buddy about the order he was going to show the movies to his unborn son in back in 2012. Star Wars couldn't have asked for a more loyal and dedicated audience. Also, it was an audience with a lot of disposable income. Kennedy managed to fuck that up by being a girlboss, and Bob Iger didn't have the sack to stop her. Now the franchise is irrelevant and dead.
>>223328302>Because the next movie was twice as bad as TLJyou can't multiply infinity by 2
>>223328351Mickey Mouse
>>223328381>y-you could make a film where Mark Hamill comes back as Luke and saves some people while wielding a lightsaber. They did that in The Mandalorian. Luke slayed a squad of Dark Troopers with his lightsaber and saved the day at the end of season 2. The problem is that you have to watch the fucking Mandalorian to see it.
>>223328055I have seen Blu-ray boxes with this crap in a shopping mall. I mean, the shelf with DVDs / BDs was almost empty, simpletons cleared it out of anything valuable, only the nu Star Wars was left there, completely untouched.
>>223328055TLJ being the middle movie was the perfect killshot that completely destroyed any hope of redemption. It highlighted how shit TFA was to people that got taken in by the marketing blitz and their own confirmation bias, while it also completely salted the earth for the sequel, since it would either double down on a hated idea or be forced into a weak and effectively segregated conclusion. If TLJ had been the opening movie, fans would have immediately revolted instead of being initially pacified by pandering and fanservice, and if it had been the finale there would have been a two movie buffer of fanservice to delude people into thinking it was good until the end, effectively a trilogy wide version of what happened with mass effect 3.In a way, TFA saved us. If TFA had been even a little less successful, disney likely would have been more wary about going all in on trying to supplant the franchise. They might have successfully boiled the frog for a few more years before revealing their handInstead they assumed that if TFA did well then any crap would too and went all in.
>>223328404You can, it's called dubsfinity. Check em.
>>223328381>>223328432Luke's cameo did a great job of highlighting that LF was too spiteful to ever change.People were clearly ecstatic about Luke being allowed to save the day, and the immediate reaction was to accelerate Yeed separating from Luke and shoving Ahsoka in to steal the spotlight back
>>223328273Getting away with what? His career got derailed by Episode 9 and COVID. Bad Robot got downsized and moved to New York. Next year's The Great Beyond is the first film he's directed since Rise of Skywalker so we'll see if he can draw in a large audience, but that's a pretty big gap between films
>>223328302Rise of Skywalker was only as atrocious as it was because Disney had to force desperate damage control after The Last Jedi, which was shit because The Force Awakens set a bad foundation for a movie series. The whole sequel trilogy is just fucking worthless. Each film negates the last one.
>>223328055Let them eat cake pham. Let them eat cake. Don’t fix it.
>>223328614oh it gets worse. Since Palpatine and to an extent the Empire just comes back. The 1-6 can be considered just filler. Then 8 backtracks everything from 7 and 9 denounces everything in 8.Just watching Episode 9 would be everything you need to know about the current canon and the full star wars story.

>>223328055Classic Star Wars died the instant people put up with picrel and didn't walk out of the theater immediately.

I didn't like 7 enough to bother with 8 let alone 9
>>223329232The Special Editions were a good cinema experience if, like me, you were a 12-year-old in 1997. Yeah some of the new additions looked bad, as your image demonstrates, but the core film was intact and it was good to see it on the big screen.
>>223328055Miss me yet, faggots?
>>223328055It's not that bad. It has a proper ending to SW, if you want the "bad ending."Now, TRoS is pure poop.
>>223329387I never doubted you, George. But no, I don't miss you, as I think your retirement is for the best. You couldn't make your kinos in the current climate, not without an army of screaming manchildren and YouTubers overreacting to them. So let's enjoy the memories, but leave them in the past.
>>223329232They are releasing the original theatrical cut next year for the 50th anniversary. Would be odd if they don't also do home media releases of it soon. So maybe it can in a way start to heal

>>223328055I never watched the last jedi but I did watch the previous 2 despite my better judgement, they were so terrible that I don’t even know how people went to see yet another one. Morale of the story, don’t give all the credit to a single movie.

>>223329633The Force is Female, chud.
>>223328302That’s not how it works anon. In a franchise, every movie will be an advertisement for the next. If one movie is shit, then it has told people the next will be similar or worse. TLJ was downright terrible and the next one being even worse is irrelevant. Even if somehow 9 had corrected and justified all the fuckups of TLJ, to the point where after you watch 9 you go back and rewatch the other two and it all makes sense now, it would’ve still underperformed on opening and would’ve needed heavy word of mouth from unbiased sources to push it along.
>>223329699what did they mean by this
>>223329686I want a comic where George Lucas and William Shatner sit and watch Space Flop together.
>>223328543What? Luke showing up and breaking up the lone wolf and cub dynamic killed the series dead.
>>223328055TLJ was intentionally meant to do exactly that. Drive away the entire current fanbase of nerdy white males and replace it with a mythical even bigger fanbase of multi-ethnic women and LGBTQs. Except that fanbase they were expecting to rise out of the ether and take over loving the "new and improved anti-white-male Star Wars" never showed up. whoops!
>>223328614>The Force Awakens set a bad foundation for a movie series. No it didn’t. At the end of force awakens, the first order (which was just one customized star destroyer, one child army, and one abandoned one-shot superweapon) has also destroyed the new republic. Meaning a galaxy in chaos. “THE FIRST ORDER REIGNS” just brushed that all aside for… whatever the absolute fuck that movie was supposed to be.

>>223329811TFA got off to a terrible start because it undid all the development from the original series. JJ is the first moron who didn't realize what he was doing.Still, Star Wars could have overcome the damage if Luke had been handled better. All they had to do was reveal that Luke himself had spread the rumor that he’d run away like a coward, because in fact he was protecting about twenty Jedi children who had survived the academy's destruction, kids who were too young to fight but too important for the future. That would have explained why he was stuck on the island and cannot intervene. The problem is that Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy deliberately didn't want Luke to be heroic in any way
>>223328614/threadIf anything RJ should be congratulated for torpedoing JJ's garbage with the admittedly stupid story he wanted to tell.
>>223330465>The problem is that Rian Johnson and Kathleen KennedyBut JJ wrote Luke being a coward and added the shitty cliffhanger post credits scene
>>223330465Begin to understand, you do. Flashy and obnoxious, jews are. But ruin everything, simps and women do.
>>223330539That’s true, but all it would have taken was a credible excuse. Before The Last Jedi, plenty of people speculated that Luke was searching for something or protecting someone.JJ put Luke in that position deliberately because KK wanted to push Rey as the absolute protagonist, and with Luke in the picture, there was no way to do that. Even Finn was significantly sidelined in TFA compared to the original movie plan.
>>223328677I watched 9 as my first Star Wars movie and it really was pretty funny.>geriatrics keep taking up runtime for no reason>we're told the characters are friends when all they do is bicker>they try to have a dramatic death for a robot the characters have been repeatedly telling to fuck off>some guy screams I WAS THE SPY as if it's a big reveal when he did nothing before then>the black guy did absolutely nothing in the entire movie>Rey screws around doing pointless shit that's obviously just there to be trailer shots
>>223329958It’s a good foundation for the plural of wars in space.
>>223328087How old are you, 10? Star Wars absolutely used to be America's darling.
People were so desperate that they ignored all of TFA's issues. Ruining Leia and Han's relationship, having Luke hide away instead of try to fix things. It was a sloppy retelling of ANH, to the point that I suspect that originally they were going to do a full reboot. TLJ slapped them across the face and made them wake up. Its only positive is that it does look pretty good.
>>223330954The Resistance could simply have been the "New Republic fleet", with Leia leading one of the units. Han could still have been a general, occupied on a different front. Luke, too, could have been engaged elsewhere, far removed from the conflict involving Rey and Finn. What I find fascinating is the deliberate nastiness of the sequels toward the original characters. You only have to look at the difference compared to the Expanded Universe, where the trio was simply occupied elsewhere in the galaxy whenever they were inconvenient for the writers. The sequel trilogy isn't just terrible; it is downright devious and malicious.
>>223330044>instantly>luke shows up to break up the lone wolf and cub: 12-18-2020It’s at least a year before they turned book of boba fat into season 2.5 of the mandalorian and another full year before the third season of mandalorian. Yes, Luke showing up killed mandalorian.
>>223331128>Luke showing up killed mandalorian. That worked as a finale, and there shouldn't have been a Season 3 or a movie.
>>223331089As it was designed. Demoralization is a must, to ruin and degrade everything. Hell the trilogy ends with Palpatine's daughter usurping the Skywalker name. That is basically Satan's daughter calling herself Christ.
Blame JJ. He's the one that set it up for failure. He also destroyed Star Trek by blowing Romulus in the first movie
>>223328614TLJ was bad, but they could have at least pretended to try and salvage something from it, instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater and going full retard.
>>223328055What I don't understand, is why they didn't have a complete outline for the directors to stick to. Disney is so controlling woth their live action remakes and MCU movies, why did they just let JJ and Rian run wild with the first 2, therefore needing the 3rd to be shit no matter who wrote it?I feel like me and a couple friends could shit out a competent Star Wars 3 trilogy outline in a weekend.

>>223328055>It can never recover. It is, right now, in better shape than it was in the late 1980s, the early 1990s, the late 2000s (when you fanboys still hate "muh Ahsoka, muh Clone Wars" by the way) and the early 2010s. Star Wars has always had a massive downturn when no new cinematic features were coming out. That's why Disney tried to force the stupid spin-off shit like Rogue One and Solo, both of which actually performed worse than than the much maligned Episode 9. Because all people really ever cared about were the mainline films. A lesson that everyone could have learnt from the trashy 3D Clone Wars feature, spearheaded by Lucas himself, that had a truly abysmal box office. Or the cinematic releases some countries got for the Ewok films back in the day, which also were complete desasters.Of course, you don't really care about facts, do you?

>>223332117In the 90s it was being referenced in other movies, it was in music, and it was in popular culture. Now no one cares, and there aren't even videogames or conventions worth going to.
>>223332006>they were terrified of it being anything like the prequelsAbrams was "afraid" of bringing the prequels up in any way. Johnson, whom the prequel fanboys hate, ironically was not and brought a good portion of prequels lore into his film. Of course, he did so subtly, mostly with Luke and Yoda commenting of the errors of the prequel-era Jedi, or by harshly and properly demystifying "Luke's lightsaber" that was actually Anakin's/Vader's and the weapon he killed those younglings with - something Star Wars fanboys never properly got.
>>223328055all jokes aside probably the worst big budget movie I paid to see in theaters
>>223332200In 90s you had games. A LOT of games. And that was before Phantom Menace got its own market.
>>223332127She's so slow, wtf
>>223332205Johnson's movie was an absolute disaster, but it feels like it had way more more substance than JewJew's films. I mean, you have A LOT of outrageous things to complain about in TLJ, while TFA and TROS feel... empty.
>>223332200>it was being referenced in other movies, it was in music, and it was in popular cultureWhich is worth nothing as far as corporate interest goes. Notably, pop-culture has changed massively since then, moved to internet (and meme) culture - where Star Wars still is very prevalent, especially because of its controversies. Be it TLJ, which is probably the most discussed film of the last decade, if not ever, and surprisingly one of the most divise ones (which neither the director nor Disney could reasonably have predicted). Or the preqels, which are particularly big on reddit, both with people who hate them and love to ridicule them and with people who love them and post more lighthearted memes about them.
>>223329811After Rey defeated Kylo in the first movie there was no reason for him to exist. If someone (like I dunno Luke) interrupted the fight it would've left something to look forward to in the next movies
>>223332337>Which is worth nothing as far as corporate interest goes. A retarded zoomer, absolutely clueless about 90s.
>>223332326>A LOT of outrageous things to complain aboutYou can always find something to get upset about, anon, if you watch films to get upset about them to begin with. Meanwhile, it's the only sequel that Lucas praised, while harshly criticising 7 and keeping radio-silent on 9. The reason for that is that it treated Lucas' work with way more respect than self-proclaimed fans give it credit for, was competently made and heavily referenced several of Lucas' own inspirations (most notably Kurosawa in both writing and cinematography). And it treated legacy characters as actual characters rather than catering to the fanboys' hero-worship, something that Lucas would have very much appreciated. Just remember how Lucas thought about the EU stuff.
>>223332377>absolutely clueless about 90s.I literally grew up in the 90s, moron. And my argument (corporate interest vs. pop-culture) had nothing to do with the 90s in the first place. It's about economic gain. As far as that goes, nothing has changed from back then to now: If you're LucasFilm, what you want is sales, direct profit. Not Weird Al making a song parody about Yoda (from which you will never see a single dollar).
>>223332478TLJ featured some WW2 in space, it's Lucas' fetish. No wonder he liked it.It also featured some boob monsters worth of getting rule34 art. Better than JJ, but the bar is quite low here.
>>223332528Then you would know SW OT was still alive and kicking. Lucasfilm was getting fat on money from official merchandise, games and licenses to third- party companies.
>>223332338Except how tfa had the right idea of moving the franchise away from the skywalkers. As that’s what tfa ended on. Hans gone, two new assholes are centric, the empire and new republic are gone. There were grounds to build a new conflict in the franchise and then they pussied out and made it about the skywalkers again.
I watch Lucas's Star Wars films every year, usually around Christmas time. If I feel like it, I'll include the prequels in my viewing list. I've gone through the prequels about 10 times, lol. Yet I've never watched any Disney Star Wars more than once. Nothing calls me back to those films. No good music, no favourite character, no cool scenes. They're totally empty.
>>223328273> He was born to Jewish parents in New York City and raised in Los Angeles. His parents are television producers Gerald W. Abrams and Carol Ann Abrams
>>223328273Star Wars sequels were promised to his tribe 3000 years ago
>>223332581>TLJ featured some WW2 in space, it's Lucas' fetish. That too, yes. And color-coding of characters and their emotional state to the max, something Lucas always liked to do in Star Wars to an extent. Plus a bit of Wizard of Oz in the visual language, which most directors have a hard-on for.And then we know that TLJ actually kept quite a few of Lucas' ideas for the overarching story, like Luke being a traumatised hermit. Abrams' films apparently did not. Of course Lucas would appreciate that.
>>223332205>Johnson, whom the prequel fanboys hateIs there anyone who doesn't hate him?
>>223332478For all TLJs flaws (and there are many) it did try to do something different, and Rian Johnson is serviceable director (we're just ignoring the Throne room scene). He is also an absolutely dogshit writer, the movie's pacing is off, the dialogue is wooden and YA-ey, and all the lore breaks which have been done to death. Case in point, the kamikaze scene, beautifully done, but universe ruining. If he wasn't writing the movie, or if KK had pushed back on his more retarded ideas instead of giving him a blank check it would probably have been much better.
the 90s were weird because they had all the kino games and books, but star wars was very uncool at the same time in middle school in the mid 90s i got made fun of a lot for liking star warsit started turning cool again when the special editions came out
>>223332928Most people hate Abrams, not Johnson.
>>223332637>SW OT was still alive and kickingNot as far as it being a money-maker was concerned. That did change in the mid-90s with the special editions. But not due to some pop-cultural relevance. Rather due to people actually buying tickets and later on VHS tapes.>official merchandise, games and licenses to third- party companiesYou massively overestimate those. Merchandise sales significantly lowered after 1983. Licensing deals happened every now and then, but their value at the time was questionable. And games, comics and books really only ever spoke to the hard core of the fanbase. LucasFilm Games (later LucasArts) earned its fame and money with graphic adventure games in the early 90s, none of which had anything to do with Star Wars other than some rare in-jokes and eastereggs. Their actiony Star Wars games were mostly made for consoles and handhelds and sold poorly. They also played poorly. I think the first Star Wars titles that released for the PC were X-Wing in 92 and then Tie Fighter and Dark Forces in the mid-90s. Those are fan favourites to this day, but that's the problem: They are fan favourites, not mainstream breakout hits.
>>223328302force awakens was the worst. ruined skywalker and the mythos. yeah last jedi was stupid and had woke shit and ruined kylo, but there was nothing there anyways. the chance to give us a return to form was there and jj gave us more slop. 2/3 of the series was his and they were awful

And even if you try hard to not admit that, which is a huge disrepect to John Williams, all of the sequels still had some of the best known and most liked pieces from the OT. To pretend that there was "no good music" is asinine and outright ignorant.
I died with Luke my optimism for life died with TLJ a decade of pure Disney garbage

He's an excellent director and writer who particularly excels with lower budgets and his own cinematic projects (Brick, Brothers Bloom, etc.), but got his industry credits by directing three Breaking Bad TV episodes, one of which (Ozymandias) is the most highly acclaimed of them all, while another is the most controversial (Fly) due to its widely different style, artistic approach, and a focus on metaphors and subtext.>>223333114>He is also an absolutely dogshit writerHe's easily the second best writer to ever work on a finished Star Wars film. I'm putting Leigh Brackett over him for her contributions to the TESB script that basically provided a proper dramatic structure. The other writers you have are: Lucas (utterly terrible dialogue that the actors themselves ridiculed and had to improve on by improvising, little to no story structure at all other than Campbell's rigid monomyth template over and over), Kasdan (who was brought in mainly to salvage the dialogue but failed), Abrams (who's only trick is his Mystery Box bullshit) and Terrio (do I really need to say anything about the mess he delivered?).People need to stop pretending that Star Wars ever had outstanding writing or isn't usually all over the place in terms of plot. Meanwhile, TLJ and TESB actually are structured like pretty traditional three-act plays and build their tension well.>lore breaks>beautifully done, but universe ruining"Lore" doesn't mean shit. Lore is whatever a film does, and trying to limit what a film can or cannot do by pre-defining a set of rules that are not even fully established in the legacy films of a franchise is needlessly limiting the creative process. By the way, contrary to Abrams, Johnson did work closely with the "storygroup" consisting of legacy writers for supplemental lore material, and they greenlit his script. You'd think that they know more about what does or does not break "lore" than fanboys do.

>>223333340>on par with Binary SunsetSounds like a case of nostalgia goggles. Williams is an excellent composer and never lost any of his talent. When you say you want something on par with Binary Sunset (commonly known as "Luke's Theme" or "The Force Theme"), what does that even mean? Certainly you don't just want more of the same - the theme itself is in the sequels afterall. Doing something new in the exact same style also cannot be the answer. Is Vader's Theme ("The Imperial March") on par with it? If so, why? The answer cannot be melodic complexity, because Vader's Theme really doesn't have that, but instead makes its relative simplicity its strong suit while also having stong instrumentation and harmonies. You brought up Rey's Theme, which is arguably one of the most interesting pieces in the Star Wars soundtrack to listen to: Its whimsical nature and fast-paced main woodwind melody give it a very different identity of its own. It is a fairly complex piece as well. What are your reasons for disliking it?
>>223333674Read the post. I assume you know very little about scriptwriting. Johnson's scripts work on many levels, even Brechtian Verfremdung if you want to go there. (You probably don't, so let's stick to Aristotelian mimesis instead.)

>>223328614>Rise of Skywalker was only as atrocious as it was because Disney had to force desperate damage control after The Last Jedi, which was shit because The Force Awakens set a bad foundation for a movie series. The whole sequel trilogy is just fucking worthless. Each film negates the last one.In a very meta-narrative way Rise of Skywalker is a perfect film, evil won. Star Wars died and Rey Palpatine killed a franchise as well as a universe. The Emperor's will.
>>223334166Proportional effort.
>>223330412This has to be one of the worst romantic kisses ever put to screen. Neither actor is even attempting to look like they're enjoying a romantic moment. Is this the best take Rian could get?
>>223332729the next two movies were pointless, there was no threat and no showdown and nothing to anticipate so they had to drag Palpatine back after falling through a giant chasm and exploding before the Death Star exploded
>>223333274>Literally the same composerfrom his hospice bed
>>223328055That slopfest was so god damn boring both my wife and I fell asleep in the theater. And it was a matinee. What the fuck were they thinking?
>>223334197>Those people are retarded.Well, they are people who based their whole lives on a space opera franchise. Of course they are retarded.
>>223334235>romantic kissesIt wasn't romantic to begin with. And yet ... still a better romance than Twilight.
>>223333725
>>223334563>from his hospice bedThat was a decade ago. John Williams is still alive and kicking today - and composing, though not for film scores. Back during his work for the sequels he was 82 to 87 and in good health, even conducted the orchestra for the recording. Not that health matters all that much: Beethoven wrote some of his best work after literally going deaf.Your whole argument makes little sense.
>>223330954the whole trilogy really is the most repulsive cultural inversion of our time. your heroes are losers and dead geriatric old men. your new heroes are fat dysgenic minorities. stop aspiring towards greatness, embrace mediocrity
>>223328134The hype that came with the theatrical releases of the Special Editions has been unmatched by any movie since. No one who wasn’t there for that (or Batmania or Bartmania or Turtlemania) can truly understand.
>>223335443>your heroes are losers and dead geriatric old men.Literally how it always was. You think Odysseus was a morally upstanding guy who got rearded for his cleverness? Well, maybe if you've seen Nolan's trash adaptation you actually do think that. And I guess Oidipous was totally not violent or impulsive and he and his descendants lived long happy lives. Orpheus was particularly strong-willed. Medea was absolutely justified in her brutal revenge and did not at all end up a complete self-pitying wreck. Macbeth and his wife were not greedy egotistical murderous bastards at all and became universially beloved regents without any duplicity. Hamlet was a very sane man who lived happily ever after. Siegfried never helped his friend catfish and rape a woman, wasn't too stupid to take a full-body bath and never fell to betrayal that escalated into taking out a whole dynasty. Faust was not an overly ambitious arsehole using others for his personal kicks and didn't ultimately fail to live up to his own standards.Yeah, all of them were such manly virtuous ideal classical heroes. Not weak, mentally and bodily. Never erred, always triumphed. Because that's what compelling storytelling was always about! How dare those new movies break with that ages-old tradition and show their heroes - sorry, OUR heroes as fallible human beings? What a disgrace! Now, capeshit, on the other hand, that's the peak of culture!
>>223335574>The hype that came with the theatrical releases of the Special Editions has been unmatched by any movie since. The hype for episode 1 just a few years later was much larger. As was the disappointment.
>>223329756Mandalorian was already dead when S2 became little else but>THIS WEEK'S GUEST STAR: the seriesin order to promote whatever new spinoff they were working on that week.
>>223329801>there, we changed everything about this franchise to suit you, now will you give us money?>lol we never cared about it actuallyEvery time. You'd think someone in charge of making decisions would have noticed by now.
>>223335443Don't forget, Last Jedi literally has a character saying the line>let the past die, kill it if you have towhich is exactly what the sequels did and then immediately tried to backpedal when they realized they fucked up
>>223333274It wasn’t John’s fault that the score for the sequels didn’t rise to the level of his earlier SW work. Jar Jar “Mystery Box” Abrams is so terrified of his one trick getting spoiled that he made John work without access to the dailies or even a full script. That meant he had to just write “Star Wars music” with no real inspiration from the action or atmosphere of the films. That’s radically different from the earlier scores that he tailored to the precise story beats of the films. Hell, Rey’s “theme” is an unused melody from Harry Potter, and that tells me that John must have thought, “Oh, you’re making “product,” not art. Here, have some sloppy seconds.”
>>223328351Batman, you fucking retard
>>223329811It never stops being funny that TLJ opens up with>uh yeah the First Order took over the galaxy in like an afternoon despite losing their Giga-Death Star>lol just don't think about itand now suddenly they've got a giant fleet full of never-before seen ships (oh but the characters know what they are immediately, remember: tell don't show) but at the same time they can't spare more than three TIE fighters per space battle so we get the most redundant chase scene in cinematic history. It then compounds the fact that if Leia and the others knew that the First Order had all this shit just lying around, why wasn't the Republic doing anything at all to even curb them? It's an entire trilogy that only works if the audience assumes every character in it is functionally retarded.
>>223335796Go to bed Rian
>>223335995That's right! The Last Jedi is the origin of the First Order being inexplicably well supplied! You are so good at watching movies and remembering things!
>>223335995To me, it’s worse than that. Assholes like Abrams and Johnson really think they’re smarter than their audience. They’re contemptuous of not just fans, but the audience in general. They write lazy, inconsistent, poorly thought-out shit because they think we’re too retarded to notice. Hell, Johnson’s most successful solo project - Knives Out - revolves around a character who solves his mysteries specifically because the writer is breaking his own established rules. There’s nothing smart or clever about that.
>>223336027TFA has them as a rogue fringe faction on the edge of the galaxy that somehow built a new super-duper Death Star with nobody noticing, and then TLJ takes place literally hours later and starts by telling us they now rule the galaxy with an iron fist. They don't even have the fleet around Starkiller Base in TFA, were they all just hanging out at the malt shop or something? Did they just coincidentally have a million other bases around the galaxy that nobody picked up on?Again, the audience is forced to assume that the good guys are in fact brain dead to allow such an obvious threat to build up uncontested for the best part of probably thirty years.
>>223335796>focuses specifically on tragediesHow convenient for you!
>>223335995>despite losing their Giga-Death StarThe damage was already done. They'd blown up pretty much all planets that served as centers of political power for the new republic in episode 7, all of them at once, which was just as lazy a plot point as the second Death Star in episode 6, but whatever. What stops them from claiming that as a win and takeover of government? They have the largest conventional army now afterall.
>>223336024So this is your best argument, huh?Have you ever actually seen a play or read a decent book in your life? You come across as one of those uncultured capeshit fanboys who skipped literature class in school and still think they know about good writing from their Hollywood slop.
>>223336101Probably the fact that the core worlds alone consist of hundreds of Republic-aligned systems and they blew up a single one. You're telling me that not a single one of them bothered to contest a bunch of retards showing up with repainted Star Destroyers?>nu-wars EU says that the Republic immediately disarmed themselves unilaterally within months of finishing off the Empirelol okay never mind they're just fucking retarded, like I thought.
>>223330539>But JJ wrote Luke being a cowardAll we knew was that Luke was gone. They could've easily had him say "I knew with Kylo on the Dark Side, I couldn't beat him alone. Somewhere, buried on this planet, is the ancient Jedi Megazord. I've been looking for it. Help me find it, Rey, and together we can rescue the galaxy."
>>223336101>What stops them from claiming that as a win and takeover of government?Size, distance, time, and logistics. They’re not the monolithic power the Empire was. They don’t have outposts and bases in every inhabited star system. Then again, the disregard of those sorts of factors is the single biggest reason the sequels don’t invite the same level of immersiveness and verisimilitude that the either the OT or PT had. It all feels like a fever dream where anything could happen at any time, so there’s no sense in trying to insert yourself into the proceedings. Just sit back and look at the pretty lights.
>>223336098What else to focus on? Comedies that traditionally don't have any "hero" characters to begin with. Where those that come closest to being heroes and main characters are usually disrespected and made the butt of the joke? Like Dyonisos in The Frogs or Sokrates in The Clouds maybe? You must think that they were treated with the utmost reverence. Or maybe someone from A Midsummer Night's Dream? Oberon or Theseus or Lysander? Or Puck? Who the fuck even is the supposed hero here? Well, at least The Merchant of Venice gives us Shylock - and he's such a virtuous character who does nothing wrong and is loved by everyone!Shall I keep going? Or would that not be convenient for you?
>>223332338>After Rey defeated Kylo in the first movie there was no reason for him to exist.I always think back to what Rich Evans said when RLM was trying to figure out what the plot to The Rise of Skywalker could possibly be, especially with Snoke dead.>There's no possible way Kylo Ren is the ultimate final foe of this trilogy. He's too much of a dipshit and Rey has already beaten him twice.Like I know Kylo was supposed to be a whiny fanboy type villain but Jesus Christ the guy accomplishes NOTHING as a villain. Even when he kills Han, Han basically lets him. He couldn't even properly finish off Finn who, even if we gave him the most credit as a combatant possible, at the peak of fighting skill and competency, was a fucking Stormtrooper.
>>223336223>the sequels don’t invite the same level of immersiveness and verisimilitudeThis is really the case with everything about the sequels. Leia's leading "the Resistance" against the First Order because... we need to have the Rebels vs Imperials story again. Nothing ever goes into explaining /why/ she's leading another rag-tag group when it's explicitly shown the New Republic run the galaxy and we know she was a key figure in getting that established. She seems to know the First Order are a threat, but oh I guess nobody trusts the woman who helped overthrow the fucking Empire (lol no we won't tell you why that's the case either!)
>>223336247Oh, I don’t know. Maybe something like Arthurian legend and pulp fantasy/space opera like Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon since those are the most obvious influences Star Wars draws on from Western media. But hey, why would a disingenuous faggot think to do a thing like that?
>>223335927>Don't forget, Last Jedi literally has a character saying the line>>let the past die, kill it if you have toWhich everyone thought was retarded even at the time because we all knew Solo: A Star Wars Story was coming out in like a month.
>>223336307>He couldn't even properly finish off FinnTo be fair, he'd just taken a blaster shot to his gut that he reasonable shouldn't have survived. At the very least, he should not have been able to keep standing and pursuing the good guys at all. But that kinda is the problem with Abrams' lazy approach. You either have one unreasonable extreme (good fighter gets beaten by inexperienced fighter) or the other ("because our good fighter needs to get beaten, we'll have him technically fatally wounded but still survive somehow").
>>223336384>SoLOL>a movie that exists solely to explain the retarded dice Luke gives Leia in TLJ
>>223336307>>223332338I've said it multiple times in the past but TFA absolutely sets the stage for a Kylo face turn and a Rey heel turn in the second movie.Kylo's shown as being this impetuous, borderline incompetent Sith Lord wannabe, he's there asking Vader's ruined helmet for advice, he struggles with Rey and Han and half the time he looks like he's about to cry because he doesn't know what he's doing. He's set up as the perfect stereotype of a character who is trying to live up to what he thinks he's supposed to do but he doesn't know how to do it and he's having second thoughts.Rey, on the other hand, is flagged practically from the get go as being a perfect super-genius fighter, mechanic, pilot, all that shit, and whoa-ho, she's even force sensitive! But what's this? She shies away from Anakin's saber (fear), she's constantly losing her temper when confronting Kylo both in the interrogation and the saber duel (anger/hate), and her actions end up getting her friends Finn and Han injured or killed (suffering). She's set up perfectly to bail on Luke's training and turn to the dark side in the confrontation against Snoke/Kylo, while Kylo could bail after Snoke's death and the ship is destroyed, fleeing in the Falcon and returning to help the Resistance on Salt Planet as a redemption arc.Instead it all goes absolutely fucking nowhere because nobody put the slightest bit of thought into this trilogy and it absolutely fucking shows.
>>223336422Don't forget too that Rey was critically injured also. Right before they fought, Kylo force-threw her and smashed her into a tree so hard she got knocked out. That kind of injury is at least as debilitating as a gut shot, so they should realistically cancel out. But you only ever hear Kylo's injury get brought up by apologists trying to rationalize how he could possibly lose. JJ is a talentless hack and TFA does not deserve anything close to the praise it gets.
>>223336454Additionally, you know who /else/ was an excellent fighter, pilot, mechanic, and Jedi, and then turned to the dark side? The blueprint was right there to have Rey turn and then have Kylo fight to redeem her in the last movie, effectively mirroring Anakin's fall but this time she's saved before dooming the galaxy. It was all RIGHT THERE and they fucked it up.
>>223336447>"ThEsE aRe HaN's"Uh, no, sorry, Rian. I've actually watched the original trilogy - At no point does Han have a special pair of golden lucky dice. You couldn't have had Luke give Leia Han's blaster or something? Something actually recognizable and not completely made up?
>>223336384Yeah it was fucking retarded. Wouldn't be surprised if that was Johnson shoving it in as more "lol subverting expectations" shit.>>223336447I was honestly confused what the fuck was going on in that shot in TLJ because I'd never seen the dice before in all the times I'd watched the OT. I still couldn't point them out if you asked me to, there's never any point that they draw attention to it.May as well have had Luke hand her the hyperdrive coupler or hey, maybe his old jacket or something like that. Also why the fuck would Luke have them anyway?
>>223336348>Maybe something like Arthurian legendGreat. So you haven't read that one either. Surely the Knights of the Round Table weren't possibly depicted as prideful, adulterous, egotistical, vengeful or murderous. And the story totally does not have a bad ending where the whole system of kightly ideals collapses along with the royal court itself. Of course.>pulp fantasy/space opera like Buck Rogers and Flash GordonAh, yes. Those were the "classical" heroic tales we should be looking at. Because Lucas certainly drew only from those badly written joke characters. Not the flawed characters of Akira Kurosawa's films, particularly The Hidden Fortress, which is basically a liberal Macbeth adaptation with its setting changed to medieval Japan, even though it shows the clearest parallels and gets cited as the primary influence on the story. And not Campbell's Hero of a Thousand Faces either, which is literally an amalgamation of the tragic hero character of the past that I've listed and more. No, only cheap American slop from the 1930s is the measure of "good writing"!
>>223336454>he's there asking Vader's ruined helmet for adviceAnother huge missed opportunity (one of the many many ones from the sequel trilogy) is not having Anakin's Force ghost appear to Kylo. It could keep 'glitching' into Darth Vader, and so we get both Hayden Christensen and James Earl Jones scolding Kylo for his actions.>My turn to the Dark Side is nothing to admire or emulate, you arrogant edge lord dumb fuck. Do you know how much I suffered? Do you know how much the people I loved suffered? Even in death, regret eats away at me each and every day. If I could go back to that fateful day and kill Palpatine the instant he revealed himself to me, I would. You know what I got for joining the Dark Side, Ben? Fire. I got fire. And no skin. Is that what you're hoping for?>Etc. etc. etc. It's truly bizarre this didn't happen, considering neither Disney nor Christensen seem to have any issue with him coming back and doing cameos, considering how many he's done in recent projects.
>>223335927>>223336384Did you guys also notice who that character was?Do you usually think that the bad guy of a story is the one to who you're supposed to agree with and take the moral from? Why ignore that the good guys all come to the exact opposite conclusion by the end and even outright state that learning from the past and growing beyond it is the way to go? Oh, right, you don't like the good guys, so they must be wrong.
>>223336681It's not that we think we're supposed to agree with the villain from a story perspective, it's that we know that that's clearly what Disney was wanting/thinking in a real life sense, considering how much they obviously hated, and how quickly they were killing off, the OT cast.
>>223328087Very good bait. It used to be said that Star Wars was the golden goose and that it was impossible for it to not just shit out money. Its impressive how thoroughly damaged Disney made it.
What a hot take bro, just... hang in there, I guess?
>>223332822Yeah, but HOW did he do it?
>>223336681No shit anon, it's more that the line itself is indicative of what Disney were trying to do with the sequels. The fact that it was in all of the trailers compounded that.
>>223336636Yeah, go ahead and ignore how I specifically said Western influences. And ignore that Camelot had a golden period before the bittersweet fall. Star Wars is escapism. I know that’s a dirty word in your pseud circles, but that’s what it is. It is the space opera equivalent of Lord of the Rings, where it’s “fuck the taxes, evil has been defeated.” You’re not “elevating” it by taking it beyond that, you’re destroying it completely, much akin to what Amazon is currently doing with The Rings of Power. People go to escapist fiction to escape the darkness of the world, not to get reminded of it.
>>223336711>it's that we know that that's clearly what Disney was wanting/thinking in a real life senseIs it? You just stated that they keep bringing back legacy characters in their side project and appealing to nostalgia. Sounds more like they also disagree with the bad guy's attitude.>how much they obviously hated, and how quickly they were killing off, the OT cast.Harrison Ford literally demanded that Han get killed off in 7 as a contract condition. Not Disney's fault that he always wanted that. Maybe you're barking up the wrong tree? And weren't some of you guys throwing tantrums because Leia survived 8 despite Fisher dying after filming had finished? Didn't fanboys and youtube grifters want Disney to rewrite the whole story just to delete most of the actresses' last ever scenes? And didn't Disney decide to honour both her and the integrity of the film instead? Also, didn't Johnson literally have Luke wink at Kylo and say "See you around" before dying, implying that he'd be back to haunt him as a force ghost in 9? Like Alec Guiness returned in 5 and 6? Didn't that literally happen in Trevorrow's first draft of 9? Guess that went out of the window when fan favourite JJ Abrams came back.
>>223336744It's kind of appropriate considering the fable of the goose that laid the golden egg ends with the farmer slaughtering the goose to try and get more gold out of it.You could even say it's like pottery, it rhymes
>>223336839Kek
>>223336821>go ahead and ignore how I specifically said Western influences.Campbell is a "Western" influence. As is Macbeth, the thing that Kurosawa adapted into what inspired Lucas. Also, notice how all the examples I gave before are also broad "Western" cultural heritage (Greek, British and German, I probably have also added some French ones, to be fair, but the post was long enough already).>ignore that Camelot had a golden period before the bittersweet fallNo one ignores that. The problem is that we're talking about the characters, and they fail to live up to your standards of what a hero is. And frankly, the whole thing would be boring as fuck if they were.>Star Wars is escapism.I don't think Lucas ever claimed that. He called it a lot of things: A children's story, a fairy tale, a cautionary /moral story, a historical commentary and a political commentary on American imperialism. But not ever "escapism". I know it's hard to accept for someone like you, but Lucas actually seems to have wanted Star Wars to mean something and make people think, draw parallels to real life.
>>223336951Oh no doubt he did, primarily that faith, hope and love triumph over tyranny darkness, and evil. Interesting that you would include Macbeth, because at no point in the play is he ever the hero, a sympathetic tragic protagonist at best, but no hero. Star Wars is Macbeth from MacDuff’s perspective
>>223336575>You couldn't have had Luke give Leia Han's blaster or something?>>223336577>May as well have had Luke hand her the hyperdrive coupler or hey, maybe his old jacket or something like that."Here, Leia... This is Han's compressor that Rey bypassed."
>>223337175>at no point in the play is he ever the heroSee, that's your problem: You go into this discussion thinking that "hero" means something along the lines of "perfect human being" or "morally upstanding character", when traditionally it does not, and simply describes the protagonist.Initially it was a term meant specifically for gods or demi-gods (harkening back to the Herakles, or Hercules as the Romans called him, the quintessential demi-god protagonist) but quickly got widened in meaning to describe protagonists in general, particularly when they were unusually strong fighters or clever tacticians. They were, however, always deeply flawed.I'd say that the "superhuman strength" thing is the only remnant that capeshit kept from the term. And you made your own meaning up based on that twisted concept. So, by your definition, who would be the "hero" in Macbeth? Malcolm? Macduff? Another side character who opposes Macbeth?By the way: Oidipous Tyrranos' titular hero is very much like Macbeth in many aspects. Not weak-willed and not getting manipulated into killing, but also power-hungry and ruthless, and a complete pathetic failure in the end.>Star Wars is Macbeth from MacDuff’s perspectiveThat's a bit of a stretch, isn't it? Macduff does not go into the confrontation with Macbeth wanting to forgive and redeem the villain. He also is never tempted by darkness like Luke is, isn't impulsive, wavering in his conviction, doesn't fall for any traps, doesn't strike Macbeth in anger. He is a rather boring character, actually. More of a plot device that exists to bring the actual protagonist's story to a conclusion.Of course, Luke also is not a Macbeth type of character, although he is easily manipulated and filled with doubts. The parallels are more of the nature of how the story itself is told, and that's 50% Shakespeare (the introspective) and 50% Kurosawa (the outside perspective).
>>223334235Literally everything about the movie is a travesty.
>>223331128Again, what are you talking about? In terms of narrative it was undone instantly. Do you seriously think people just immediately dropped it because the initial premise changed even before they had time to see what came next? Of course they didn’t. S2 ended on a high note that made people curious and then immediately hit the reset button.
>>223337440Traditionally? No. Fortunately, the discourse has evolved since then and given us a more inclusive term - protagonist - thereby focusing the qualities typically reserved for the designation of “hero.” I would have thought one so preoccupied with discussing the literary merits of Star Wars would have been familiar with such disctinctions.
>>223337440I’d say that very much depends on whether you see Vader as Macbeth or the Emperor. One of your staggering intellect should have easily made the connection. Still too “stretchy” for you?
>>223333660LolLmao even
>>223337783>the discourse has evolved since then and given us a more inclusive term - protagonistFunnily enough, the discourse has devolved: The rather inclusive term "hero" has, in the mind of some people, particularly (and almost exclusively) Americans, become a very restrictive term with a way too specific meaning that diverges from the traditional definition in shockingly discrepant ways and makes any sensible discussion impossible. Mind you, Campbell's concept of the "Hero with a Thousand Faces" that inspired Lucas does indeed come very close to the traditional definition and gives its hero archetype a few default flaws and weaknesses. Namely indecision, doubts and moral wavering. To no one's surprise, those are characteristic weaknesses Luke Skywalker displays, both in the OT and in TLJ, but (to my limited knowledge of that material) not in the EU trash that most hardcore fanboys seem to construct their mental image of the character from. Indeed, Lucas' own definition of a hero never seemed to be anything other than a deeply flawed protagonist. Mind you, Lucas was always more academically minded than the average American, more interested in international culture, more knowledgeable about politics, more invested in general societal advancement. Star Wars shows all of that, for better and for worse. And of course he always was a film nerd with a knack for character studies (just look at American Graffiti) - he shares that latter sentiment with Rian Johnson. >>223337831>depends on whether you see Vader as Macbeth or the EmperorThe Emperor is not even a proper character for 90% of the story and only really shows up at the very end, serving mostly as a catalyst for Vader. So, yes, if you think that there is any Macbeth-type character, it has to be Vader, the one power-obsessed tryrant that we actually get to know over the course of the story. Not the plot device lurking in the shadows. So, yes, indeed too "stretchy" for me.
>>223328055 SW was already killed by prequelshit
>>223337998You're not particularly well read, are you?
>>223338193>The Emperor is not even a proper character for 90% of the story and only really shows up at the very endInteresting! So he shows up in “MacDuff’s” story precisely one less time than Macbeth does!>the discourse has devolvedIf you look on modern discourse as having distinct terms that differentiate between the “hero” and the “protagonist” of a story as a devolution, then you’re speaking in outmoded dichotomies. Since you apparently look on terms such as “antagonist” as some sort of literary atavism, who’s the “villain” of Macbeth?
