This is not Baneposting I swear.

So on the infamous plane scene, after the first guy refuses to talk to CIA, he shoots his gun without aiming at him and says "He didn't fly so good", this as an attempt to persuade the other guys to talk, however, later Bane exposes him. Regardless, this plan was already flawed from the start, nothing is stopping the guy who just "got shot" from saying "hey guys, I didn't got shot, and I'm still on this airplane, CIA is just bluffing!"
>>
>>223354409
Doesn't he also threateningly wave his pistol around at the guys who all have bags over their heads and thus can't see him threatening them with his pistol?
>>
>>223354409
Why did they think they could make a guy in a polo and khakis come off like a threatening badass? The opening shot where he's all stanced up is supposed to make him look so confident like he's got the biggest dick ever and knows it, but he doesn't do anything.
>>
>>223354524
They could feel the wind cuts from his waving
>>
>>223354409
I forget the scene, but if there's were multiple guys, they don't know if one of the other guys got shot. So they could take the risk that he is actually homicidal in his interrogation tactics, shout out "I'M STILL HERE," be wrong, and get shot/thrown out of the plane themselves
>>
>>223354409
Realistically speaking, if you were in a plane with an open door mid-flight you wouldn't be able to hear anything other than the noise of the turbulent wind and whirlwind jet turbines
>>
Why did he take 3 hooded guys directly onto a CIA plane without taking the fucking hoods off to see who they were first
>>
Why did Bane say "They expect one of us in the wreckage"?

It was not to account for doctor Pavel (they've left a dead body to replace him). The only reason Bane would need one more guy is if he believed CIA when he said
>But only one of you!
But he just called CIA's bluff and proved he was just talking shit. Was it a double bluff? Was CIA actually going to throw them out of the plane at some point? Did Bane somehow know there was only one prisoner on the flight plan? How?
>>
>>223354409
My theory is that he just did that to get BIg Guy to speak
CIA had no idea who BIg Guy was other than 'he wears a mask'; CIA had no idea what the fuck 'mask' meant - is it all the time, only when doing operations, etc
There's also the fact that Big Guy's group were not going to speak and if Big Guy really was on the plan, he'd speak up as the leader.

My other theory is slightly different
CIA wasn't really in the CIA - he was working witth Big Guy and willingly died in order to convince Dr. Pavel that it was a real kidnapping
>>
>the plane wings get torn off looooooong before the actual hull goes down
>bane does a blood transfusion for pavel and one of his goons so when they find the goon's body they'll see Pavel's DNA even though that's not how DNA works
>bane pulls this convoluted "let's pretend to be hooded and handed over to the CIA to kidnap Dr Pavel....even though...we already have Dr Pavel...."
>>
>>223355533
He had to find out what he told them.

>>223355487
It gets even more confusing when the guy making the exchange with CIA calls himself The Masketta Man. CIA's brain must have been fried during that whole encounter trying to make sense of everything.
>>
This entire thread is more thought than Nolan put into the whole plane sequence.
>>
>>223354409
>"hey guys, I didn't got shot, and I'm still on this airplane, CIA is just bluffing!"
I think the presumption is that if he did that he'd actually get shot. or tortured. I mean do you think spooks are above that?

He worked very hard on it....
>>
>>223355663
I mean he's already getting tortured, he might as well let his comrades know they're bluffing and to not talk about Bane
>>
The whole "PERHAPS HE'S WONDERING WHY SOMEONE WOULD SHOOT A MAN, BEFORE THROWING THEM OUT OF A PLANE." But never made sense to me
There's plenty of reasons to do that. On the very rare but not impossible chance that if thrown out of the plane they end up surviving (multiple cases have shown this is possible)
Also it adds terror to the person, shoot them in the stomach and throw them out. You guarantee if the fall doesn't kill them, the blood loss and shock will. And it's terrifying to be free falling while blinded and in pain from the gunshot wound
Sorry Bane...but it makes sense
>>
>>223355628
Masksetta Man is obviously allied with Big Guy.
I still think CIA is really working for Big Guy and this was done as a way to keep the actual CIA (the American group) out of the picture but CIA (the man) was working with Big Guy solely as a way to sell the idea that Big Guy is really a mercenary with nothing to lose in the invent Dr, Pavel ever did get rescued

>>223355663
Assuming CIA (person) is really from CIA (group), doesn't even matter. Big Guy's group is still the fucking League of Assassins who have no problem dying for any reason

>>223355714
The point was for Big Guy to intimiate him, assuming you read into the literal plot of CIA (man) being part of the CIA (group) but as we know, Nolan's Batman movie goes far, far deeper than surface level
>>
What makes the plane scenes funnier is that they had these huge imax cameras whirring in a confined space, so nobody could hear anyone else’s lines properly. The actors look just as confused as the audience.

assuming CIA really is a part of the CIA, I think he was making shit up since he was improvising when he heard about Big Guy from Masksetta Man. Normal interrorgations wouldn'#t work like that since they'd be aware they're bluffing so they've no idea once they're being interrogated properly if the CIA is lying or not to them so why fuck it up?

I remember getting into the theater just as this scene started playing. like I had missed the opening previews and stuff and the movie had literally just started. but I thought that I had missed like, a whole scene of the movie. I was so confused.
for the longest time I thought there was another scene setting it all up and that would have made sense of it, but nope, it's literally the cold open of the film.

and that's pretty much all I remember about seeing this movie in the theater. what a forgettable piece of trash

>the flight plan he filed with the agency actually listed all three of them
>the agency immediately realizes Bane is still at large when they find only one wreckage brother
Come to think of it, did any of this actually matter in the end? Is it ever a plot point where anyone is genuinely surprised at Dr. Pavel and Bane showing up again later, having assumed they'd both died in the crash?
>>
>>223354409
If he says “I’m not shot”, CIA could really shoot him (somewhere painful, like the kneecap so he screams), and then say “he didn’t fake getting shot so well!”

Why the fuck did Bane believe CIA actually put only one of them on the manifest if he just called CIA's bluff and realized he was more of a by the book guy and not a 'guantanomo bay' type guy? Wouldn't their plan have gone up in smoke if CIA discovered different number of bodies?
And if CIA actually only told Langley he was bringing one of them in, doesn't that mean he needed to get rid of the guy by throwing him out of the plane to keep him off the records?

The other argument is we don't know how he was shot or thrown out
While I still believe that CIA is part of Big Guy's group if he is against Big Guy, think of the following: shoot someone in the leg, have them wear a parachute, untie their armshands so they can use the chute. They're essentially out in the countrside, hours possibly from civilization and you've give osmeone a leg wound
Most likely, they'll die after landing since they will most likely use the parachute so the fear isn't 'oh no, he's dead and body thrown out and no funeral' but rather 'he'#s throw a guy out and possibly leaving him to die in agony over several days vs dead within moments or even dead already'
>>
>>223356490
>shoot someone in the leg, have them wear a parachute, untie their armshands so they can use the chute.
He couldn't do that though as the agency would have accounted for the number of parachutes on board

>>223355354
Perhaps you're wondering why someone wouldn't unmask a man before putting him onto a plane.
>>
>>223356318
I figured it out. CIA knew that him pretending to throw someone out of an airplane wouldn't make any noise, so a much less convincing bluff. He shot him before so that they would have something to hear to know he was serious.
Of course bane sees through this, nothing but the sound of something very painful happening would have come close to convincing him. The gunshot just confirmed his suspicion of CIA's character as he obviously wasn't willing to inflict pain, bluffing or otherwise
>>
>>223356479
>nobody cared who CIA was until he took off the mask
>>
>>223356590
That's true, but look at these two scenarios.
Either CIA told the truth and the flight plan only accounted for one of them, then the agency would ask what happened to the parachutes.
If he HAD in fact called it in that they had more prisoners but started shooting them before throwing them out of an airplane, albeit in the leg with a parachute, they would be pissed he didn't just bring them all back
>>
>>223356694
What if the fact that he called any of them in was a bluff in itself, and he was always planning on dumping them out?
The agency finds the crashed plane with one extra wreckage brother in it and they're like "who the fuck is this?"
>>
>>223355849
this was /tv/'s peak
>>
>>223356765
But if he didn't call in the flight plan how would the agency find the plane?
>>
>>223356694
You're assuming that CIA has no authority within the CIA itself - the theory is that CIA (person) is still working for the CIA then diverges into 'working for himself' (ie realized Big Guy was there via Masksetta Man) and didn't call his superiors or else he did
But in either case, he is lying to Big Guy and his friends. Even if we assume he did in fact call in the flight plan, nothing matters or changes. CIA went into business for himself (to use a pro wrestling phrase) the moment he realized that Big Guy was part of the group.

So what you're looking at is really a situation of neither Big Guy and his men or the viewer can reliably trust CIA

We've seen CIA is willing to use deception to try to interrogate people so how do we know he's not lying to us?
>>
>>223356825
>>223356825
It always seemed weird to me that one man would call himself CIA as a metonym for the entire organizations, as in "I am the face of this organization". You know like how Dredd says I am THE LAW. CIA has that type of authority
>>
>>223356694
there's an asymmetry in falsifying the manifest. I'm assuming CIA doesn't have complete internal discretion. there's all kinds of politics going on in Langley. Maybe they have a democrat president in charge who promised he would dismantle Guantanamo and end waterboarding and all that.
It would be easier for him to file fewer heads and then explain why he had to bring more in vs filing more and then explaining why he didn't bring them in at all
>>
>>223356825
CIA already had mercenaries though. He had Dr Pavel and his men, so he already was the big guy. No need to go into business on his aircraft
>>
>>223355628
THIS MAKES NO SENSE IF THEY ALREADY HAD PAVEL WHY DIDN"T THEY JUST TAKE PAVEL WHY GIVE IT TO CIA AND HIJACK HIM BACK
>>
>>223356871
I think this was just to placate Dr. Pavel.
Think about it, what's more comforting: I'm CIA or I'm Agent Cargo Pants, CIA
One is less authoritve
Dredd is different in that in his universe he is one of the best and most feared (by criminals due to how effective he is) Judges. In Nolan's Batman-verse, we don't know if CIA (person) is anything special.

>>223356912
I think part of it is that most viewers assume CIA isn't capable of lying to us, the viewer.

No, this is Patrick.
>>
>>223356796
No anon, I meant what if the flight plan he filed with the agency listed him, his men, Dr. Pavel there, but none of them.
It didn't matter if any of them talked, once CIA got what he wanted then none of them would fly so good. What if Bane leaving one brother behind in the wreckage was a mistake, and he fell for the ruse?
the movie never goes on to address the aftermath of the plane crash so it's not like he faces consequences either way
>>
>>223356912
>It would be easier for him to file fewer heads and then explain why he had to bring more in
They would still ask about the parachutes if he made good on his threat though. And if he didn't follow through then we just end up back where we started, with a nonsensical shooting that blows his cover. Second he fires Bane knows he isn't a threat as he isn't willing to inflict anything very painful, either torturing someone not killing them immediately or subjecting them to the terror of being thrown out of an airplane alive.
>>
>>223356958
This is actually a big point. He says they needed to find out what dr pavel told them but then he never asks, just takes pavel's word for it
>>
>>223356958
I think the whole point of them capturing Dr Pavel was to fake his death in the plane crash, it's why they put his blood into the other body so that when the agency finds the crash site they're like
>oh well this is clearly Dr. Pavel here, I guess he's dead
and it's presumably so that Bane and his crew can bring him to Gotham and get him to work on the bomb without worrying about anyone coming looking for him.
You're right in that it's fucking retarded because even if the Masketta Man wasn't in on it, if Bane had a plane and a whole special forces team on call he could have just captured the doctor by himself and left the Pavel-body there when they were en route to the airfield instead of getting CIA involved.
>>
>>223357082
>This is actually a big point
for you
>>
>>223356983
That's a good point, and perhaps the consequence we see is what little federal involvement there is. They're trying to piece together this extra body that wasn't on the flight plan.
There also would be any fire started when the plane crashed. Pretty sure the fuel tanks came off with the wings but that can come later
>>
>>223357082
They could've tortured him, threatened to kill a loved one. The amount of coordination involved to just to see what Pavel told them doesn't make any sense
>>223357089
If they were going to swap in a dead body wouldn't it be much easier to do it while Pavel is in a car or bus that they control?
There's no way the "killing two birds with one stone" factor was worth all of this hassle. Especially since the CIA would be way more suspicious that their special plane crashed.
>>
>>223357124
Wouldn't* be any fire
>>
>>223357133
>The amount of coordination involved to just to see what Pavel told them doesn't make any sense
It may have been the case that Bane didn't expect to call it in right away. The plan was to stay on the aircraft, wait for CIA to file the flight plane with the agency, THEN take over to ask the agency what he told them directly over the phone. All the while threatening to shoot CIA before throwing him out of airplane

>Bane: But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would file only one terrorist on the flight plan? Now, an off-the-book agent would file only one, leaving him room to kill the others. You are clearly a by-the-book agent, going by how you pretended to throw a man off the plane. But you must have known I would know that, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not assume you filed all of my men on the flight plan.

Except the only reason he thinks that is because CIA when he was threatening them said the flight plan lists me, my men, but only one of you! First one to talk gets to stay on my airplane!

Baneposting. Unity. Peace.

You would still hear a gunshot. The loudest planes at takeoff hit at most 110dB. The quietest pistols start near 130dB; almost 100x louder. People don't understand just how stupid loud guns are. A gunshot is an explosion .

Why didn't they just kill Dr. Pavel's secret identical twin and leave him in the wreckage?

I was the one who started the thread and coordinated that. I uploaded it and youtube kept detecting it and taking it down and I don't know how the other guy got past the filters. Fuck him, he took my shit and got like 200k views. That was 10 years ago. That could've been the start of my youtuber career. I would've monetized the channel and gotten a million subs by now.

Also his version wasn't even as good as mine. I stacked like a dozen deshi-deshi basara's and timestretched them to make them fit. I even made sure it was a pitch invariant stretch. The other guy didn't even bother with any of that and just had like 4 or 5 deshi basaras. This is what happens when you leave it to non-autistic amateurs

If CIA wanted information from the goons, why did he stick their heads out of a moving airplane and fire a gun right next to their ears?
>>
Why'd they name it "baneposting" and not "painboasting" which is what bane did?

>This is not Baneposting
Oh, this is most definitely Baneposting. But the flaw you’re pointing out is just the tip of the iceberg. CIA clocks the Hired Gun across the back of the head, that classic “knock the dude out” move, but why even keep their hoods on? It’s not like they’re concealing their location for when they let them go later, they’re prisoners. If you want to put the hoods back as an interrogation tactic later, go right ahead, but no way in fuck are you just taking them aboard the Wreckage Brother without getting a look at them first. Also, Bane then calls his bluff and later proceeds to act like it wasn’t one, leaving a Hired Gun to die for no real reason. But here’s my favorite part. What was Bane’s stated reason for getting himself caught as part of his Master Plan in the first place? To find out what Pavel told them, right? Only Pavel was brought in *with* them and Masketta was working *for* them, so he was already present for the only thing Pavel had told them - “They are not my friends;” so they find out he’s told them exactly the same thing he’d have told them if they’d never met - nothing, not to mention it gave Pavel a chance to blow them out of the water before they ever set foot on the plane.

I always assumed the "wreckage brother" was from an earlier draft of the script, and they later made the flight plan threat a bluff, but never changed it because it was a cool way to show how loyal Bane's hired guns are. So yeah it's dumb, but still fun.

Nobody cared who they were until they put on the hoods.

The plane ripped in half anyway, they could have just had the investigators assuming they all got sucked out of the plane before impact and landed fuck knows where, do it over the ocean

The term "baneposting" is named after the character Bane because the meme format specifically parodies the dialogue from the opening plane scene of the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises.

While "painboasting" is a incredibly clever and accurate description of what Bane actually does in that scene—boasting about his tolerance for pain ("It would be extremely painful... for you")—the internet community on 4chan's /tv/ board named it after the character himself when the meme took off between 2011 and 2014.

Here is why the community stuck with "baneposting" instead of a pun like yours:

Meme Naming Traditions: Internet culture typically names shitposting trends directly after the subject matter. Much like Spider-Man threads became "spidyposting" and Shrek threads became "shrekposting," repeating lines from Bane naturally became "baneposting."

The CIA Agent Factor: The meme doesn't just parody Bane's lines. It also heavily parodies the CIA agent (played by Aidan Gillen) who interrogates him. "Baneposting" serves as a catch-all umbrella term for quoting the entire back-and-forth dialogue between both characters, not just Bane's specific parts.

Your term "painboasting" is arguably a much better poetic description of Bane's monologue, but "baneposting" won the historical internet vote out of sheer simplicity.

Would you like to explore other famous lines from that scene that became massive memes, or look into the origins of other 4chan meme terms?
