In the books they go into more detail and make it clear the T-800s are coming online a decade earlier than they're supposed to (before the Resistance acquires the laser guns to fight them), but I don't think the movie does more than vaguely hint at that. Marcus was okay, but introducing him just to have him die at the end was lame; but so was the idea of him taking Conner's place; and the retarded ending where he kills everyone made no sense at all given it was supposed to be a trilogy.

Also the heart swapping thing was bullshit the director came up with to appease Bale and give him a bigger role. Originally they were suppose to swap Johns face over to Marcus' body using the skin tech after Marcus kills John. The terminator twist was suppose to happen at the end of the film, Marcus playing the long game using Kyle to get close to John. But Bale threw a bitch fit when he knew his character would only have 3 minutes of screen time. The whole movie was suppose to be Kyle focused with Marcus along for the ride as they made their way through the war happening around them

There was no way this could have worked without completely screwing up the entire setting, something the actual sequels demonstrated, by the way, by making the whole thing needlessly chaotic with the Connor terminated and corrupt. For me, the character of Marcus doesn't work because it makes no sense for him to have so much freedom in the film. He could have worked as an antagonist who eventually becomes an ally, but the movie makes it far too obvious that he is a Terminator.

The aesthetic sucked. The brief glimpses or the Future War we saw in Terminator and T2 were beyond kino. It was chrome midnight nightmare, a metal blue/black night with lasers and skeleton robots walking over piles of human skulls. Terminator Salvation just seemed desert colored day.

I think Sarah Connor Chronicles is really the only one that touched on it with any consistency, with things like Sarah being told she dies from cancer and characters from the future outright having conflicting information due to coming from different altered timelines.
