On a warm summer evening, when I was a kid, there would be a dozen kids running about in the street of our little cul de sac. We had game consoles, but we still played outside. We socialised outside. Now it can be a glorious day and the streets are empty. Besides the odd dog walker here and there, obligated to take a stroll, everywhere is vacant.It's a dead society. The best thing that could happen, for everyone, is for the internet to go dark tonight and never come back online.
If I had one wish granted to freeze the world in a specific year, it would be 1990, the year before I was born :)

You saw it all over the place. Just offhand, there was also the intro to Demolition Man. Escape from LA. The video for California Love. Even as late as Futurama, you have that one episode with Pauly Shore with the gag about people having running gun battles in armored cars on the LA freeway.

They're both bad, but my take is that smartphones have been infinitely more damaging to society than computers. Because no matter how "addicted" you are to using a computer, at a certain point you have to unplug. You have to get up and stop using it and go do something else in the real world, for hours. With a smartphone you never have to be away from the digital world for more than a minute at a time. It's sickening to be in any public space in a city these days. 10 years ago this was a boomer meme that we rightly rolled our eyes at, but it's gotten so bad it's undeniable now. Everyone is glued to their phone, at all hours, no matter where they are which also means they're never really focused on the real thing they're doing. It's impossible to be, you have one foot out at all times.It's especially ridiculous at the gym. They do 1 half-assed set then it's right back on the phone immediately, as fast as they can. I'm so embarrassed for them. I really think it would be more healthy to spend 10 hours straight on a computer and then spend the rest of your 6 hours awake actually present in what you're fucking doing.
