“The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice” is probably the best title ever conceived. It is a typical Ozu marriage drama but if anyone has ever had green tea over rice you’ll know it tastes bitter as hell. It’s a perfect metaphor for the film.

>>223415042Thanks. I don't necessarily like a film just because it's pre-code, but they usually have a fun energy (the comedies) or live wire realism (the dramas). There are exceptions of course. The Divorcee, for example, is pretty boring imo depsite the (for the time) scandalous premise that a wife might cheat to get even with her unfaithful husband. A Free Soul (also with Norma Shearer) is better but not great, Gable and Howard are ok but Barrymore feels like he's in a completely different movie. Stick with almost any Joan Blondell movie and you'll be satisfied (careful, she's barely in The Famous Ferguson Case despite being on the dvd cover and the only actor listed).
