In the comics the Green Lanterns are more like texas rangers (one riot, one ranger). Also each one has a massive sector of space they patrol.
Earth has always been fucky because obviously its central to the plot, so it has a ludicrous number of lanterns.
otherwise they're pretty much given hundreds of millions of light years they're meant to police.
They green lanterns are all connected by their rings to the central battery on Oa, but the Guardians (the little blue dudes) are notoriously aloof, and if the lanterns are called together its usually srs bsns like anti-monitors and new powers of the spectrum emerging, and like as not, usually the guardians are the ones behind it, like the manhunters.
I haven't watched the show.
Also the lantern's battery was like spider-man's web fluid. Lanterns is a show written by people who know what a Good Show should look and sound like but dont know how to actually Write a good show. Take Episode 3, fine enough episode on its own, then we get to the "its unfair to black men" line of dialogue. Which would be fine if it wasn't immediately followed up with, essentially, "let's experiment on your child to see what genes he inherited", which is fascinating given a black woman wrote the episode. Not to mention the heavily incestuous subtext between john and his mom, subtext which bleeds into his hookups with zoe, one of which happens right after he gets off the phone with his mom. The show treats being green lantern like an extension of the armed forces or being a student athlete which is incredibly limiting for the brand if the first three lanterns are all either army or athletes. Keeping on the racism though, the show follows episode 3 up with the reveal that the manhunters exploit prejudice to fuck their way to the top of the social ladder, and that the manhunter hal and john are after happens to be the only indian woman in town. Again, fascinating writing choices here. And now, instead of letting the audience sit with hal's death and really marinate in that, we get the nicer hal from 2006 because the guardians cant destroy the ring if john is supposed to be a lantern, which means the guardians have been waiting the past ten years for john to come crawling back which undercuts the hell out of john deciding to abandon being a lantern since this is all happening within the last 3 episodes of an 8 episode season. Genuinely fucking baffling show.
