For what it's worth I actually enjoyed Guillermo Del Toro's take on Frankenstein

Yeah, yeah, it's a tale that's been told a nauseatingly large number of times already, but it was so refreshing seeing a film with some actual personality in its cinematography and visuals, also I thought everyone did a terrific job in the acting department. It was some dumb ideas here and there, but overall I think this one's good enough...and compared to other recent releases it looks like Citizen fucking Kane

I'll be honest, at this point I just want to watch a good film lmao

I love cinema and I'm so sick of putting on a recent film and just sit there lifelessly for 2 hours. I don't get ANYTHING out of the new releases, I'm not happy, sad, scared, intrigued, angry, it's like being braindead for 2 hours, thne you go: "That was okay!" and completely forget about it by the next day

Anything is welcome, it could be a film about a guy who builds bidets in his spare time and I'll watch it if it's any good

I'll definitely give it a watch! I loved Del Toro's "Mimic", which is also probably 30 years old by now, so I have a general idea of his style, and I must say, I'm intrigued.

See, another thing about good recent films is that they barely get advertised for some reason.

Out of all these I've only ever heard of Perfect Days and Iron Lung, one because it's a Wim Wenders film and the other because it always gets lumped into the whole "YouTuber films" thing that they've been haking recently

But I'll absolutely give all these a watch over time, thak you!

"The Wonder" with Florence Pugh was pretty solid

It had this eerie atmosphere to it and it's an appropiately slow burner, I really enjoyed it

Much like all good recent movies it's not a masterpiece, but I'd give it a 7/10

I didn't like how he boiled down Frankenstein into daddy issues, ignoring the depth of the original text on concepts like rationalism, man's inability to give birth, and the industrial revolution
it's an adaptation of the wikipedia summary of Frankenstein, but left me wanting a proper adaptation

Well, he did give the monster some personality...he envies humans pretty much and wants to learn from them, like the scene where he meets the blind guy in the cabin, he also seems to envy our ability to die since he's pretty much the Wolvenstein in this film

Again, not a GREAT adaptation, but I really liked the visual aspect of it, the creative and slightly Old Hollywood camerawork and glossy, over the top set design and colors....not an amazing film but it stands out in an ocean of boredom

Also there have been so many goddamn Frankenstein adaptations, I'm sure a perfect (or close-to-perfect) one has already been made...

No foreign films so far, so I'll reccommend an Italian film from 2023 titled "The best century of my life", and it's about an activist who tracks down a man who's just turned 100 who could help him break a law that forbids orphanages or whoever deals with fister care of children to tell them the names of their real parents, a law that apparently expires once the orphan turns 100....so the main guy tries to convince the old man to come with him and find out the name of his parents and have a little speech about it, but the guy is either really dumb or messing with him because he really doesn't care about the whole ordeal...

It's a fun and charming little film, a little too dumb in certain parts (not all jokes land) but overall it's a bittersweet little tale with lots of clever jokes that do land sprinkled throught I enjoyed it.

A24 has made many decent films. A few are actually excellent.
