To this day I don't understand how the narrative about this movie on both sides landed on "subverting expectations!">People were angry because it did things we'd never seen before in Star Wars! It turned Luke into a grumpy hermit who didn't want to help. You know, like Yoda in Empire Strikes Back. But we're going to pretend you only hated it because it was "different."And it'd be one thing if it was one side saying things like that and the other side going "what the fuck are you talking about" but people accepted the premise and argued based on that narrative.Just feels like the whole thing was astroturfed because they already had a whole good vs. evil narrative planned out and forced it onto the movie regardless of how little sense it actually made. Which is why it's all the more fucked up that it actually worked. The only solace is it's been almost ten years and I've never seen the same thing happen again.

the biggest problem with the movie is it had chances to do interesting things and actually subvert expectations, and it did none of them.Pretty much everyone agrees Rey should have joined Kylo Ren, and that should have been the cliffhanger for the next movie.I also don't strongly have a problem with grumpy Luke.
