Mary in the books is basically this supernatural being that shows up to give the kids almost vindictive correction. Compare that to the Disney movie where she lovingly brings a family back together. The book version of her straight up gaslights the whole family repeatedly. The kids will go on some adventure with her. Then next day they'll ask about the adventure. She'll be like that didn't happen you stupid little shits. At one point one of the kids straight up confronts her about the magical stuff and she says nobody will believe you. She even says that they wont believe it themselves as time goes on, they'll rationalize it all away as they grow upAnd the adventures they go on are much more strange compared to the disney dancing cartoon animal shit. Some of them are straight up nightmare scenarios. The Disney movie was too sanitized and heartwarming. The book version is like some authoritarian alien showed up and tries to scare the kids straight. If they do it right it might end up being some schitzo kino
