FF8's story is very much like Star Wars prequels, in fact some themes and key story points are very similar; in that there is the basic "good vs evil" fairy tale premise, but with a lot of subtext behind it and grey areas. So it can appeal both to people who can't see behind the simple premise and those who do, something which usually works better in movie form than in game form (game stories being usually much more literal).
