I was a young boomer at the time and didn't see it in theaters but everyone still knew some of the effect scenes like the camera spin around Trinity kicking that cop and Neo dodging bullets on the roof.

It was insane.The premise was such a thriller and then it reveals a huge plunge in what we think is real (duh, the point) to the audience and Thomas Anderson.But the big fucking thing was Manex visual effects and John Gaeta making a 120-camera rig to capture rotating shots.Basically the peak cinema with solid acting and direction on top of tech innovation.

I just remember the name made me think of the computer network in Neuromancer, so I was excited and expecting some kind of cyberpunk story but not that the real world itself would be the matrix, it was great.

I still remember my mum working at the car store (Autobarn as the manager) when the car DVD players and sound systems were a big thing, and there was a small room which was soundproofed for customers to test the sound of the system. After school one day, I had hours to kill when the store closed (just one of those "sit with your parents at work until 8pm because home was far away" nights), and The Matrix was playing.I was absolutely blown away and immersed from hell. It was so comfy too.
