Movie has noticeably better writing and directing than the previous three in the saga and ditches a lot what didn't work in the past, which gave it good word of mouth. It's about depression and loneliness which young people relate to well. I guess there's more reasons but that's all I can think of right now.

While these things can sometimes align it is fairly common that they don´t. In fact since we currently live in an age on which production companies like to play things exceedingly safe and mostly favor big IPs, market research and social media buzz and feedback over actual creativity and individuality you can be sure of the opposite. The bigger the budget the less disruptive the movie. You can thank streaming and social media for that. Before those there were far more movies with intermediate budgets that allowed for adult curated drama or some degree of science fiction or fantasy creativity. These usually didn´t do as well on the box office but were still rather profitable thanks to rentals and the smaller budgets gave creatives more leeway. That was the sweetspot for finding movies with true value. That´s the kind of movies you´d see on festivals but since it´s no longer profitable actual creativity has been relegated to low budget small productions, the kind of thing A24 does. To be blunt unless people get tired of these big ass irrelevant productions (capeshit, nostlagia bait remakes, live action adaptations of beloved animation classics and the like) and give Hollywood the slip long enough for them to decide to change business models again you are going to keep seeing this phenomena. Big ass multimillion productions with nothing to say that will be forgotten the moment you step out of the cinema.
