>>223453542My suspicion is that an earlier draft of the movie had Peter becoming angrier and aggressive as a natural result of being alone and focusing entirely on Spider-Man, but then Sony/Disney execs got cold feet because Peter Parker™, the Amazing Spider-Man™ shouldn't be too dark or potentially controversial or, you know, anything that would actually be seriously interesting from a character POV. So then some bright spark probably came up with "lol spider hormones" as a cheapo workaround and voila, he's no longer actually responsible for any violence or anger he shows! Look Mr Feige, Ms Pascal, he's still a good clean fun good guy! In general the whole movie felt like one redraft away from being properly good. It's still the best Spider-Man movie since Raimi's Spider-Man 2, but that's not saying much.

Brand New Day was infuriating.The first three MCU Spiderman films took Tom Holland, who has the potential to be a genuinely great Spiderman, and locked him in a room with the worst supporting cast in superhero history. Love interests and sidekicks who were either turbo annoying or gross, and treated the plot like a buffet table and ate it. Nobody asked for them, and nobody in the writers' room seemed to know why they were there. MJ was the crown jewel of the disaster: a walking eye-roll with the charisma of a parking meter. Her romantic chemistry with Peter was like a cat being introduced to a bathtub. Being in a scene with her looked like a court deposition nobody wants to attend.So imagine my shock when Brand New Day dumps MJ and that whole shitty gang in a ditch for most of its runtime, and unchains Peter to carry the movie. Holy shit, it's like watching Sisyphus get a day off from the rock, or a hostage discovering the door was never locked and he can go free.Then it gets really good. Sadie Sink shows up as Jean Grey, and in about sixty seconds she and Holland generate more electric chemistry between Peter and Jean than the entirety of the prior three movies did between Peter and MJ. They have that same instant magnetism that Andrew Garfield and Emma stone did. Every Zendaya scene suddenly looks like a hostage situation in comparison, with Peter as the hostage. Holland's Spiderman sharing the screen with Sink's Jean is like giving a Porsche 911 to a man who's spent his whole career driving a rusty, oil-soaked shitbox.And then the movie does it. It lets you hope, and it lets you enjoy yourself for a moment, and then it snatches it all away like a sadist with a remote. Jean is shoved out of the story with zero closure, and Peter shuffles right back to pining over MJ and the rest of the cast of sentient cardboard. Gave you a glimpse of what these movies could have been, then looked you dead in the eye and chose the worse version. On purpose.Infuriating.
