Some of them are miscast, all of them are unappealing or annoying or boring in their own way. They don't bring anything interesting out of Peter, and he doesn't bring out anything interesting out of them. MJ in particular sucks. Aunt May was the only one I liked.So every time MCU Spidey breaks free from these people or spends time with someone new, it is a breath of fresh air. The Jean Grey connection is simply the most extreme example of this, helped greatly by the fact she looks like the real MJ and by the fact Tom Holland and Sadie Sink have way better chemistry than anyone else in these movies.

If he doesn't get involved with the plot, he works. Otherwise yes, I didn't miss any of the other people in Peter's HS friend group and I hated Zendaya, especially after she tortures Peter by rejecting him, asking for a ride home, and then inviting him up to third wheel his meeting his former best friend again. Really fucked up behavior desu. Jean and Peter's interactions are generally more earnest than the HS gang and feel more important to progression of Peter as a character

Her dynamic with Peter is sharp and well written, and she and Holland need only about sixty seconds to generate pure magnetism the last three movies couldn't fake between Peter and MJ in over six hours of trying. It just instantly feels right, and suddenly every Zendaya scene looks like a hostage video by comparison (with Peter blinking "help" in Morse code).And then the movie does it. It lets you hope, it lets you enjoy yourself for a moment. It promises a genuinely interesting future for the saga. But then it snatches it all away like a sadist with a remote. Jean is shoved out of the story with zero closure, and Peter shuffles right back to pining over MJ and the fat asian dude again. The movie gave you a glimpse of what MCU Spiderman could have been all along, then looked you dead in the eye and chose to delete it and go back to what made the previous movies suck. On purpose.Infuriating.
