>>223458795In order to have 80s fantasy you need to have the conditions for 80s creativity, which is a good economy where your average guy doesn't have to worry too much about money or success or doing basic shit in life like getting married, having kids, getting a home, getting a good job, etc.. We no longer have any of that so you no longer have the capacity to have a bunch of guys to be able to sit around and come up with crazy and whimsical stuff like we used to have. We've also abandoned practical effects largely and that sub-industry needs a lot of support to even continue to exist at all, so that's withered away and died awhile ago which is another massive hurdle
Fantasy is for real adults now.

They stopped because there was an entire generation of people who just decided they were never growing up so fantasy had to start having adult themes and be as realistic as possible. You sometimes see it in 80s fantasy movies, but it's a sort of idealized generic embracing of fantasy archetypes.Wizard wear robes with a simple belt, they have beards. A warrior might wear a simple chainmail shirt with a tunic. Dungeons are full of monsters, stone and long forgotten pools in the dark. It's just a loving embrace of fantasy tropes..But you look at fantasy today, in any media, and it's all so overdone. Costumes are super complex and ornate, everything's over the top, the lore is too complex and tryhard, everyone's afraid of being generic and thus all these good ideas are "off limits".
