The concept needed a protagonist we could root for and both the architect and the therapist were poor protagonists.

The 2nd half of the movie was utter trash... the dinner scene and the chase with the giant pirate were so goofy and awkward... really your whole big reveal is that the real danger is the manifestations of our own dark feelings!

And I'm saying this as a total noob, I didn't even realize there were all these videos of backrooms on yt until May of this year when the algorithm recommended the trailer to me because it's a horror movie.
So I went to the theater and saw it.
My total first-timer impression of what the backrooms are is that they don't actually have an age.
Like I never got the impression the backrooms were built at a certain time or anything like that, but that they just kind of exist forever in some extra-dimensional zone.
And I guess if that zone can be said to have some force that's driving it to do what it does, then that force doesn't really know what it's doing with any of the shit it's copying.
It's just sort of out there putting various things together, but always with this sort of alien non-comprehension of the interrelationships between objects.
Later I went back and watched some of the backrooms videos on a few channels.
I just thought the point seemed to be not so much what the backrooms are or what caused them to come into being, the point is that they didn't have to come into being, and the backrooms are both the thing that's driving their creation and the infinite space that was put there for no other purpose but to house a shitload of rooms and hallways.
Parts of it were pretty interesting.

To my eyes, they seem like the result of a simulation with errors. Kinda how a game will develop defects if your RAM is going bad, or how you could access "zero worlds" in old games that tried to show you a level that was made of memory areas that were never intended to represent a real level. I found it entertaining and interesting and well directed. But I really didn't feel like it properly set up and developed its own themes. It wanted this big thematic "point" about the nature of subjectivity and the limits of psychology and self reflection, how in trying to "fix" yourself and "be better" you're actually still just putting yourself at the centre of the world and everyone you know, and how people can be deluded about what they really want, but they did not justify or make natural the big "I'm acting" monologue" about it in the end. Some setup was done, but not enough to make it feel natural and resonant, not enough to make the movie echo elegantly throughout itself like when a real movie is actually competently "about" something.

The movie doesn't hang together as a text. Its basically the first scene where he freaks out in the roleplay, a flashback or two by the therapist, some stray tiny moments, and that's basically the entire setup and developement you get before the guy abruptly goes crazy in the rooms and its thematic monologue time. That's like sub 10 minutes of anything that can really be construed as setup, 60-70 minutes of horror/exploration filler, and then he's suddenly crazy and its time for a monologue to explicitly and exactly vocalize every single thematic concept.

AA is a cult of mental gymnastics that deludes themselves into a functional state that ignores the realities that they themselves created through poor behavior
it works well for a lot of people too
i am biased because the meetings i did attend were apparently a really sad group, according to a friend who'd also attended
i need hip replacement surgery because alcohol killed my hip bones, and my surgeon wants me to attend for a month, so im hoping the groups here have more upbeat attendees that can discuss something aside from how alcohol ruined their lives
