All the red dirt is ultra deadly to humans. We have never made a self contained, perfectly sealed habitat that can live for years by itself even on Earth. It's certainly not going to happen on Mars whete it's way harder. Everyone sent there would be on a suicide mission. If anything, they could send thousands of AI robots and they can spend a couple decades making a human-livable habitat that proves to be durable and resilient before sending real people on over. It would still be a "just because we can" project that doesn't achieve anything real

People went through the arduous task of exploring the frontier to expand across America because it achieved something even though it was super hard. Mars achieves little to nothing. The moon at least would give a good way station to expanding further out to resource rich asteroids. People could live on stations out there with no gravity well to worry about. Still deadly, but less than living on Mars.

We might get a manned Mars landing in a decade or two but it would just be for prestige and to collect some rocks. Any hope of creating a permanent colony is at least a century away and even then it would be highly dependent on constant resupply from Earth.
