I would take that quote more seriously if George Lucas had ever created any art himself, but alas he's only produced slop

>However, this revisionist approach often leaves release-accurate versions unavailable to historians and audiences alike. In our interview, Flower recalled a director enamored with a digital aesthetic “wanting his films to look sleek and modern and degrained, with oversaturated colors that would not have been achievable photochemically.” Flower suggested including both the revised cut and a historically accurate version, but the director vehemently refused. Facing a deadline, Arrow acquiesced. “For me, he was vandalizing his own work,” says Flower.

Did Arrow release any Cameron movies?

At least it shows he is genuibe anf passionate about his art. I'd yake a perfectionist autist doing bullshit like this any day over Disneyslop that "gives the fans what they want".

I'd be the first guy to say there's some unforgivable bullshit in the special editions, but there's also a lot of nice upgrades that I 100% brlieve were the kind oc shit they always wanted to put in there but couldn't. The upgrades to Cloud City with the windows and CGI exterior scenes for example, and the original Jabba's palace music scene is pretty stiff and dead in the original version so I understood Lucas wanting to jazz it up (and the result is horrible and obnoxious don't get me wrong). As a fellow """artist""" and """creator""" (I have experience with creative processes, not with succes) I understand George's thought process and feelings because it is well documented that his creative vision had always far exceeded what his budget and tech at the time was capable of. The idea that you could just go back and fix anything you wished you could have pulled off back then would be tempting, but of course it blinded him to an extend and he went too far.
>>
>>223462212
Purists are also retarded. In my country the national film archive releases restored movies, but restores them only so look like they might have looked in cinemas when they were released, even though they are able to get better results from the negative.
They're treating movies like paintings and don't want to add anything that wasn't possible at the release, which is retarded since the information are there in the negative. No one is painting over it.
>>
>>223464927
It's just not a very interesting topic
>>
>>223466063
What do you mean by better exactly? Color grading and digital noise reduction? Because that technically IS altering the information on the negative
>>
Funny fact: George Lucas insisted on placing ladies pantyhose over the lens in first the scenes where R2-D2 and C-3PO were on Tatooine when they were leaving the escape pod, and that is the reason why he was so gung-ho on removing "the grain" in that scene.

I'm not suggesting that Lucas doesn't know the difference between his questionable filming decision and grain inherent in film, but I am suggesting that many fans don't know his true motivations.
He was warned not to do it back then in 1975/1976, but he made his choice. So, if you want that film to be 100% original, just know that it can never be crystal clear in all places even if you remove all the dirt (soul).
And yes, dirt and grain are not the same, but refer to what I just typed.

>>
>>223462438

>>
Really, there the original version of E.T. that's on the DVD and Blu-ray was lost for decades and at one time Spielberg even denied that it existed, or at least the studio said so. The version on VHS and Laserdisc was altered in the dialogue department (fans know) and wasn't released unaltered until the DVD release.

Now why can't Lucas just do that? We've already need it, George and it didn't kill us and it didn't kill you. I love him, but he's an autist in the best way AND an asshole.

With color grading the problem is that no one knows what the original looked like. Reference copies are aged and faded and filmmakers themselves don't remember what the movie looked because their memory sucks. So at best we can get what the director thinks movie should look like now.
My problem is with dead directors and I was thinking about black and white movies specifically. In the analogue days a director had no idea what the final print would look like. It was just a guess and sometimes it got close to their vision and sometimes it didn't. Sometimes the lab would fuck it up and there was nothing the director could do.
Today we can adjust everything digitally to make it look the best way possible. Show details that weren't visible on the old print, because the director didn't have control over it, but those details still exist in the negative. While colors are subjective I don't think any director would want to have their films look less detailed.

You know, a single blu ray disc can store up to 100GB.
So if you're gonna sell a new release of a movie (like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), why not just have your new release include all prior releases so that consumers can have a single disc that includes all color gradings and so that they can decide for themselves which version they like best?
And it's good for preservation since you now have all releases.
Surely all that can fit in a single blu ray, right?

You dumb smelly nigger I'm not talking about green yellow sky in this one specific movie, but everything is open to interpretation, espefially in old movies. Coppola approved two restorations of Godfather and they look different. Same with Blade Runner. Wachovski sisters went back and made Matrix green.

>Today we can adjust everything digitally to make it look the best way possible
Problem is that "best way possible" is very very subjective. I actually kinda like the piss filter edition of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly but most of this thread thinks it's a disgrace.
>>
>>223466880
>Surely all that can fit in a single blu ray, right?
no, plus generally they'll adjust the bitrate to fit in the bluray when they have some higher bitrate source.
>include all prior releases
it's retarded and too much space. I think the bestest good bad and ugly has 2 versions, the theatrical cut in the main disk that is like 90gb, and the extended one in the second disk that is a little lower bitrate since it's longer and there's extras on that disk too. Even then, 1 of the 2 right holders of the film decided they actually didn't want the release to have the original italian mono track so they could released it themselves.
Every prior release you add a disk, or you compress it to no longer be bluray but why tf would you want 15 versions of the movie with DVD bitrate when they're all shit except the latest one (restoration wise, they're all shit low bitrate now)
>>223466063
that's the point of film archive? If you want to make some new fancy version that follows current film making trends or matches the the vision the director always had, then that different project. Let a studio do that not the film archives. And like the other anon says, it's very subjective. Should a desert movie from the 60s have the piss filter or not? Either the archives has to make some editorial decision or they fallback to how it looked when it was released

>>223466956
As I said, I was mostly thinking about black and white movies. These are two surviving prints of Sunrise. Clearly one is much more detailed than the other. I don't think any director would prefer their movie to be shown in worse quality.
>>
>>223467102
Which studio? Majority of films are only restored once. Film archive can do both. One restoration copy they put in the archive and they can do projections for freaks and a remaster that they can release on blurays and vod, where the film will look the best it can.
With color movies every release is basically a remaster where they have to make decisions what colors it should have.
>>
>>223466744
What color should the background be here, you retard? Green or blue?

>>
>>223464001
No. It sucks ass. At best, it is a decent snapshot of suburban American life in 1962. The characters suck. The writing sucks. The plot sucks. It's all shit. At least the Stars Wars movies are entertaining for children regardless of when they were born. American Graffiti is solely entertaining for literal boomers who can watch it and say "yup, those were the days"
>>
>>223467468
Based on what? The original was blue, the green one was changed by a Ridley in 2007, then they reverted back to blue in 4k blu-ray.
>>
>>223467541
Based on how it looks? It's obviously superior and fits the tone of the scene much better.
>>
>>223467477
You don't understand film material degradation. Every restoration of color movies is just educated guessing. Another problem is the projector lamps they were using back then were yellow. So even if the movie would be perfectly preserved and not degraded it would still look different today than in the past.
>>
>>223467580
That's just your interpretation. In the cinemas it didn't look like that. Ridley decided these colors in 2007 when it was cool to make movies green.

>>
>>223466908
>Wachovski sisters went back and made Matrix green.
They didn't, apparently what happened was the color graders with the ungraded scan doing the first blu ray run decided to add the green since Matrix Reloaded had just come out and they just assumed to make it green. The 4K remaster is now considered pretty much on par with the original theatrical release. One of the few times where directors actually didn't fuck up a grade, while Michael Mann continues to apply a blue filter on everything.

disproven since people found original 35mm reels from the original cinema run and the grade is essentially like the current 4k. the scans are cool to see but covered in scratches which sucks ass.

>Nta, but The Matrix was green in theaters in 1999.

The first DVD was actually very low on the green, the true green meme didn't happen until the very first blu ray release.

how is he a hypocrite? in 1988 he was criticizing studios (i.e: people who didn't make the movies) for altering said movies without the consent of their creators. They were colorizing black and white movies made by people who were no longer alive. Lucas only changed his own movies, as is his right as their creator

There is are nuances to that (out of context) quote anti-Lucas people pretend not to grasp. First of all it was talking about re-releases modifications and censoring done or demanded by people other than the original creators. In the case of the Star Wars changes throughout the years, it was the original creator's will. Secondly, the whole idea behind those Star Wars updates is neither profit nor "an exercise of power", it was for the art itself; which is a whole other story than altering someone else's movie colour schemes because at the moment that was done those new colours were in trend.
