It's because Joe's audience were mainly kids/stunted teens at the time, and for them Joe was never wrong.
Joe came in aggressively and Geoff put him dowm firmly and fairly, like a parent, they saw the exchange and it left them confused.
You ever had that situation where father punished you by making you explain yourself? For some people it is worse feeling than your mom slapping the shit out of you, and they all subconsciously related to that and it left them angry at Geoff.
Not that Joe handled it better than his audience lol
