I think they were sincerely trying to make a show that would be acceptable to or liked by fans. They themselves just don't have any fondness for it. I think Discovery and bleeding into season 1 was what they wanted to do and after they saw it bomb hard they decided or someone came in and decided for them to "fix" that shit.
