The score was giving me a fuckton of anxiety on top of the constantly moving camera work. And then of course the acting itself and the mere intensity of nearly every scene. I didn't cry at the end. My eyes watered but I was too stunned to cry.I cried the next day after I had a drink and broke down thinking about the movie. Especially how much the ending hit.I could even sleep cause I got a rush of anxiety every time I thought about the movie. I'm going to visit some sick family members this week, and maybe take my life more seriously now. They don't make movies that impact you like this anymore. One of the best movies I've ever seen yet I don't want to watch it again for a long time.

I get that all those directors are older now but even younger directors dont seem interested in huge films like this and mostly aim for carefully crafted thriller/horror stuff or subtle dramas. I think the world is a lot more numbed to emotion and just confused in general about how to process everything thats happening so making a movie like Magnolia seems more exhausting and futile rather than cathartic like it probably did for PTA in the 90s.

Most their inspiration/ ideas comes from other movies as it's often their only frame of reference

How can you possibly say this when Ari Aster gets to make 2 surreal wankfest bombs in a row, Eggers is doing a “VERVULF” in old English and shot on an 1800s camera, Safdie is making a pingpong jew movie, Cregger just made a Magnolia-esque horrorsloppa movie, on and on. Every director that has a name has an opportunity to “do whatever they want”, and Magnolia isnt exactly a massive budget movie. 70% of Magnolias budget is probably just for the cast.
