As a small boy in the late 80s and early 90s, I thought the house full of boys across the street were the coolest. I'd go over and they were nice enough to let me hang out with them. They usually had movies on, and gremlins and Cat's eye both scared the crap out of me. Specifically Cat's Eye, I didn't even know it was this movie until I looked it up yesterday. I vividly remember that little troll climbing up a bird cage and eating the bird, and then mimicking the sound of a cat and jumping up on the bed covers and scaring the little girl. We will see how accurate my memory is in an hour and a half, when we get the troll segment in the movie. Which I am watching now! I also remember them "shocking" the cat in this movie and it upset me a lot too. At least they only blew air on it.

Always loved Alice in Wonderland as a kid, but this scene got to me. In the scene she is finally given a chance to get home, follow the red path and you’ll make it. Along the way the woods get darker, taller and scarier. All the funny little characters are gone and it’s just her. And she gets all the way out there and find a little creature sweeping up the path. Now she’s completely lost and alone and just breaks down crying. I had a TERRIBLE sense of direction as a kid and could get lost in an empty room. So that level of being lost and alone scared the shit out of me. Ironically it made me grow up paying more attention and now I’m a great navigator.

I always felt a deep level of empathy and care for Alice, and felt so bad for her sitting alone in that wood, crying by herself as the world slowly dies around her. It didn't scare me, but I definitely see where that could traumatize a child. I think it's important to realize you would feel that way yourself if you were in that situation and what makes it a growing experience. There is a moment in Spirited Away where Chihiro just breaks down and cries while eating Rice balls with Haku, completely overwhelmed with all the strange things happening and the hopelessness of her situation. Very similar to Alice in Wonderland, although her break down happens earlier in the story comparatively. Luckily in both films there is someone there to help the female protagonist: The Cheshire Cat appears to Alice, and Haku the mysterious boy is helping Chihiro. We aren't always alone.

The art style alone was something I’d never seen before, credit to Ghibli, and it encapsulated me. I probably just stood there staring at the TV the whole time. I didn’t know it was a legit movie until I was a teenager. But yeah, same thing. Kid gets lost and has that oh shit moment when they realize they are actually stuck. The false sense of “I’m lost but surely in an hour or so this will be fixed” wears off and real fear sets in.

Watched I Know What You Did Last Summer when I was like 7. Was fine with everything, handled it all but then the ending completely got me and I had to sleep downstairs with the lights on.Another was some movie, I think direct to TV maybe. I think it was about a family adopting three dogs they find out in the woods and then the mother/father dog shows up and is wild. So it attacks the home and its pups, killing two of them. It got me good because it was on early in the morning and I think one of the dogs is decapitated and it shows its head. We just got a dog so it upset me.

When I was 12, I tuned the tv on one day and this was on. It was a movie shot completely as it was a TV News channel, so of course I throught it was just that, a news channel. All of a sudden, 3 fucking meteorites struck earth. I was in complete terror up to the very end glew to the tv as the reporters were trying to make sense of the events. These mutherfuckers did a War of the Worlds number on me and I still remember the whole thing vividly. Of course you watch it now it's kinda funny, you have the mother of malcolm in the middle, Q from Star Trek and some other relative famous actors but I didn't knew anyone at the time.

My parents fought a lot, which later resulted in a divorce, and my older brother beat me up often, so I think I just ended up blocking out large portions of it over time (I think I have short-term memory issues because of this). My father always kept forcing us to watch horror movies (or ones adjacent to horror) with him, and he'd always get really nasty about it if I refused to watch it, so I think that's likely why I can't stomach horror in general. Even suspenseful moments in shit like non-horror video games make me deeply uncomfortable. But specifically? I remember having my eyes closed throughout the entirety of Peter Jackson's King Kong, especially during the scene with all the bugs, and I was so scared of being taken to go see the Van Hellsing movie that I begged my mom if I could wait outside in the lobby instead.

I definitely remember seeing Friday the 13th 3, Fright Night this way. I used to have recurring nightmares of being paralyzed on the kitchen floor of my aunt's house (I always found her house to be really creepy), while a skinless person slowly crawled toward me along the floor. For literal decades, I've thought that was just some fucked up dream that I had concocted in my little kid brain, but then I watched Hellraiser 2, and realized that I must have seen that part where Channard resurrects the skinless Julia from the mattress.

For some reason, as a kid, I was always most scared by the idea of accidental manslaughter, freak accidents, particularly situations where a person does something intentionally, not knowing that the action is killing or maiming someone. To me, the horror wasn't in the cruelty of people, but the perceived cruelty of reality as it allows it to happen.

I didn't remember the cats eye sequence correctly either, I vividly remember the creature pretending to be a cat, and the girl thinking it was the cat and calling it up on the bed with her, and then a little dark purple faced troll with the jester hat jumping up on the bed and laughing maniacally as it scared her while she screamed. That sequence does not happen anywhere in the movie, you and I both probably remember a nightmare version we made up about it later in a kids dream.
