Once he secures the airlock, he grabs the helmet immediately and goes straight for HAL's brain, near the bridge. HAL's brain room, just like the airlock here, is bathed in red light that makes it very difficult to discern the true color of the newly acquired helmet. But it's green, as you can see in the shots of him climbing upstairs.This is pleasing, because the red, yellow and blue suits are prominent props at the center of the pod bay room. If there's a fourth or fifth suit available, one would naturally expect a green, or an orange, etc.
Dave in true-color, in the green helmet, about to shut off a very very naughty rogue AI that has just killed 80% of the local human population.

It goes something like that, it's been a while. I would imagine the ship still has certain basic mechanical failsafes that even HAL can't override, although this runs counter to humans placing a high degree of trust in him. This thing even shows the green suit's position.
