>I’m not sure what I was expecting going into the movie, but a cross between a Roland Emmerich disaster movie and John Cassavetes’ “Opening Night” was definitely not on my bingo card. Iñårritu acknowledged the “Opening Night” influence both in the film and in the Q&A, but for that rat-a-tat dialogue, he pointed back to the Hollywood comedies of the 1940s. “When we were together at Pinewood, we screened ‘His Girl Friday,'”

Just watched Il futuro Ăš donna (1984), thank you to the anon who shoved me into it. The movie clicked when I interpreted what the allegorical characters represent.

Malvina (Ornella Muti) represent feminism, Anna (Christopher Walken/Hanna Schygulla) represents status quo liberal women, and Gordon (Niels Arestrup) represents a phony ally.

Early on Anna is living her usual life until she notices Malvina in trouble. She hesitates but an inner sense of justice gets her to help Malvina. Malvina enters her and her boyfriend's (Gordon's) life and right off the bat creates some friction in Anna's and Gordon's traditional relationship. Gordon does his best to accommodate these new ideas for Anna while fearing losing her to Malvina, and only does so when he gets to be intimate with Malvina.

Two scenes in particular stood out to me. First one being when Anna and Malvina go out to a club at night. Malvina is pregnant so Anna stuffs some clothes under her dress to make herself look pregnant. They enter a club of mostly men and have a good time. They're mostly treated well and accepted by the men around with some jerks here and there.

The reason this scene felt significant is when you think of the club as an allegory for a patriarchal society. In such value system, a woman's worth is dictated by the relations with the men in her life. The seed of a man made Anna and Malvina valuable in that world. If they were yass queen independent girlbosses who don't need no man, i.e. if they rejected the patriarchy, they would've been treated with less dignity.

The second one was the concert scene where trouble arises when a mob storms the concert hall through police resistance. Gordon, wearing a Che shirt, immediately attempts fleeing the scene but Anna and Malvina beckon him back. I just thought that detail of the Che shirt really made it clear that he was a phony, considering what Che represents. Mind you, he didn't start wearing it until Malvina had integrated into their lives.

Gordon was entirely submissive to Anna in their relationship, it's even commented upon in the beginning, that's not a "traditional relationship".
>phony ally
Guy literally gave his life trying to protect them, and that comes in a moment where their threeway relationship is at its most "harmonious".

I like how it kind of ends in a circular way too, we begin with just Anna and a man who's submissive to her (and in a very mother-child dependant way), and we end with just Anna and her new man/child (a baby boy - submissive to the mother).

What do people make of Criterion's new Carax restorations? I've only loaded the SDR Boy Meets Girl disc so far but it seems to me the aspect ratio stretch loses more information around the borders than it gains enough I question if it's actually more correct than the old US Carlotta release. Also, the picture is much darker with information lost in some areas - black crush? I'll be curious to see whether any upcoming euro release of these new 4K jobs looks any different.

>>
>>223518689
I respect the audacity of casting actual cops and protesters and letting them improvise their lines, but the acting is pretty silly. And perhaps due to the lack of a traditional screenplay the politics felt too jumbled for it to be a coherent piÚce-de-résistance (although I'm a big fan of the scene where the rookie policeman guns down one of the protesters and isn't able to articulate or explain his actions). The editing is what elevates it for me. I firmly believe Watkins is the greatest editor of footage since Eisenstein.

>I knew him through his editor, who was also his girlfriend and in her twenties. She was a very lively girl, and I remember her saying: “Watch what I'm going to do when Barnet comes.” She went up to him and ordered: “About turn!” This immense figure turned round smartly and she jumped on to his back, calling "Gee up!” That’s how I met him.
>He asked me: “Who are you?” I said: “A director” (this was when I was making April (1962)). "Soviet,” he corrected, “you must always say ‘Soviet director.’ It is a very special profession.” "In what way?” I asked. “Because if you ever manage to become honest, which would surprise me, you can remove the word ‘Soviet.’ Now I am a ‘Soviet director,’ although I only became one recently.”
>Then we had a drink and he told me: “Above all, don’t watch my films twice.” “Why?” I enquired. "Because they are made for one viewing and afterwards, when you go for a walk and remember them, they become better. I am not,” he told me, “a chemist like Eisenstein, who poisons slowly.”

>Ideologically, he belonged to that company of film-makers, but morally he didn't take part in their games. Why do I say that? Because a director who had gone through it all and been broken by the demands of the time, who had started to make films about the kolkhozes, said of him that he was an enemy. Just like that. Indeed he was distrusted by all his colleagues, for what he had done? What did By the Bluest of Seas amount to? In our epoch of construction, with all its serious and weighty problems, what's all this about a wave which sweeps a woman into the cabin of a boat? This really has nothing to do with reality!
>I have the impression that professionals, the same ordinary technicians who still work at Mosfilm who had contact with him, adored him as a person. This was in contrast to those directors who exemplified what a film-maker should be. Happy, straightforward, generous, a drinker and a child, all at once. He had no anxiety about being humiliated; he could say, “I don't know how that's done.”
