I think the biggest problem is that John is not likable. He is more likable after the time skip but in 2016 he is a buzz kill most of the time

It's weird, the show seems to want to take its racism cake and eat it too. John's parents have a grievance about how hard it is to be black in america so they act like psycopaths and turn their own son into the perfect soldier by abusing him his entire childhood. And then John goes "woe is me a black man in rural nebraska" only for the blackmailing girl to laugh in his face and say they're not actually racist.
