Then Spirited Away comes in and Kiki's Delivery Service. After that Howl's Moving Castle. I won't properly rate it in comparison but I finally watched Wind Rises and I was really impressed how good a completely non fantastical ghibli film based on history could be, the looming atmosphere of Japan's role and consequence in WW2 was kino af. Totoro desu is extremely underwhelming and one of the ghibli films I skip rewatch frequently. If spirited away maintained the strength of its first third it'd probably be in the top 3.

He was totally up his own ass by the 2000s, his movies got so long and boring and go nowhere. This, Howl’s, and the most recent one are tough watches. He was seething when he called Angel’s Egg boring, and he never topped it. Kiki’s is probably his best, but maybe not even the best Ghibli film. Satoshi Kon and Mamoru Oshii mog.

Based take, actually one of the best Ghibli flicks I’ve seen.

More often than not I find his movies just too meandering.
I just subconsciously parse "meandering" live action and animated movies differently.
With live action it feels liberating to unshackle from the expectations of story and plot and go off the beaten path and let the situations breathe.
But in animation I can't shake the notion that the excellent animation is going to waste on a plot just flim-flamming around. It doesn't have to be tighter plotting even, but just with more purpose.
When a movie feels like it could go on for an hour or five hours and nothing much changes about how it is perceived then something is lacking.
