Anyone old enough to remember when this movie came out?
Why did people hate it at the time?
>>
The kid was fucking annoying. Guess they couldnt get culkin
>golly gee wizz!!!
>were in the moooohveeeee!
Funny because Jurassic Park also had annoying kids and it buried this movie at the box office
>>
Too ahead of its time
>>
Because it was another light-hearted comedy outing from Arnold. If you enjoyed Predator and Terminator, and hoped for more films in a similar vein, then you could only be disappointed by the later, "funny" phase of Arnold's career.
>>
>>223553388
The setting hurt the movie, people wanted to see Arnold in fun locations killing a lot of bad guys.
>>
>>223553388
Most people actually don't appreciate kino.

It's more rare for a good movie to be a hit than not.
>>
>>223553539
Thats what he does in this movie as a parody of those movies.
>>
>>223553519
>another light-hearted comedy outing from Arnold
Wasn't the only other comedy from Arnold at the time Twins?
>>
>>223553388
unfunny kid movie shit
>>
>>223553388
It's an issue of timing. This was the point where action movies were completely moving away from the action movie tropes of the 80's; so you're basically doing a spoof/hommage to something that is seen not being trendy anymore (and don't @ me with stuff like Austin Powers, those were successfull because of things that had nothing to do with what they were spoofing). It would have been more appreciated a few years earlier.

And then there were the people who just didn't get the movie, even though they were supposed to be the target audiance. The movie was unironically too smart for the average action movie go-er.
>>
>>223553388
Meta is the lowest form of fiction. We understood that back then.
>>
>>223553388
It came out at a time when movie stars didn't make fun of themselves like that. Critics took it seriously instead of seeing it as a comedy about Arnold's tropes.
>>
>>223553388
this came out the same time as jurassic park. lmao
>>
>>223553388
>Why did people hate it at the time?
Gen X
>>
>>223554071
If it starred a comedian doing an Arnold impression, people would have gotten it. But having it star the guy that you're making fun of was too bizarre.
>>
>>223554055
Gen X:
>I find it infantile, naive, stupid and normies will laugh at me if I watch it
Also Gen X:
>OH WOWZERS IT JUST HAPPENED
>>
>>223553388
I was around 5 when that came out. I liked it as a kid but haven't watched it since.
>>
>>223553451
hey at least the kid isn't a l33t hacker
>>
>>223553977
No, Kindergarten Cop came out in 1990.
>>
>>223554257
Computers were magic in 1993 like AI is now.
>>
Loaded Weapon came out the same year. Theres only room for one meta parody summer blockbuster
>>
>>223553388
The Last Action Hero was the first Reddit movie.
>>
>>223553388
It s shit.
>>
>>223553388
People didn't hate it, they were indifferent. There was no backlash against the movie, people just didn't go. Jurassic Park came out the week before and just buried it, people probably didn't even notice it came out.

i was born in 1993 and although all the films of that era, flops and blockbusters alike , would be replayed ad nauseam 3-4 times a year on tv, and were part of every boys milieu(especially robin williams Schwarzenegger Stallone and jim carrey films), i had no idea last action hero and hook were things that existed, i found out last action hero was a thing after buying aν old disney comic around 2002 that featured the film on the cover and hook from a book my mom bought which was practically the film in book form and i had just thought they had taken robin williams face from some other thing. both of those films were treated like a madwoman in the attic
>>
It's like Gremlins 2: It was too clever for audiences at the time.

Had the movie come out even 4-5 years later, it would have been appreciated.
>>
>>223554854
Imagine getting bombarded with good movies every year, to the point when you have to skip some of them.
I remember 90s and early 00s. It's seems so unreal now.
>>
>>223554854
I saw it in the theater when it came out and it was a big deal at the time because it was first Arnold big budget flop. Prior to Last Action Hero he literally could not miss.
>>
>>223553388
I will admit that as a kid I just didn't understand it
>>
>>223553388
literal boomers were addled by lead paint and didn't understand obvious parody
>>
>>223553388
>Why did people hate it at the time?
The self reflexiveness of the movie was ahead of its time.
Personally I always liked it.
And no one really hated it, it just didn't find an audience in the theater, and an arnold movie not making ALL the money was a strange thing to happen.
>>
>>223553451
the kid wasn't even a bad actor and he had a few moments of genuine good acting (the sad parts)
but the dialogue they wrote for him was fucking garbage . absolutely trash.
whoever wrote this movie is fucking cringe..

>>223553388
the movie flopped because the plot was confusing and weird. they spend half the movie talking about a dead mob guy that farts.
the kid is annoying when trying to convince Arnold hes fake.

and the end is too serious and too dark.
the movie world is too cartoony with black and white characters and cartoon cats talking.
the real world is like the city from SE7EN Or something horror

the villain was confusing because he was a nobody. a henchman. he didn't have a plan.

People that saw it loved it. I was there in a packed theater. It was the idiot critics who hated it. Critics are dumbasses who are angry that they never had fun in life, so their revenge is to give top awards to pieces of trash like "Annie Hall", but real kinos like Star Wars and Last Action Hero will never win Best Picture because of their pettiness and general assholery.

Pic related had every right to win Best Picture of 1990, yet it didn't because of their arbitrary "meh it's horror so fugg 'em" policy.

I was in my early 20s when this came out. I didn't go see it because it was rated PG. I had already been burned by Conan the Destroyer and was wary
I was wrong
>>
>>223556268
It was rated PG-13.
>>
>>223553388
Yes, I was there and I remember. The reason it failed is ultimately due to pretension. You'll see the comments above about 'too smart' for audiences. This can happen, but The Last Action Hero failed because it really likes to huff it's own farts. I suppose, unironically, it insists upon itself.
>>
>>223553451
>it buried this movie at the box office
Dinosaurs are badass, kids love dinosaurs. A tounge in cheek parody of action movie tropes would completely go over a child's head. That's one of the annoying parts of the movie though, the kid always has to explain one of those jokes right after it happens or even as it's happening. Sometimes it's ok if it's part of the joke but they do it too much. You have to let a joke breathe.
>>
>>223556261
but action fans ignored it

and horror fans ignored that zombie movie ( which i love )

that's the thing. that zombie movie and last action hero were not seen by anyone until years later ( like mystery men)
>>
>>223556580
>that zombie movie and last action hero were not seen by anyone until years later

That's just untrue. And what zombie movie?
>>
>>223556639
1990 night of the living dead
it was amazing but ignored.
>>
>>223557009
Ah. Duh. Yes it was amazing. It was even better than the original, plus the music was spooky too, but Hollywood is horrorcist.
>>
>>223553493
Honestly, this. Moviegoers weren't ready for post-modernism yet. Plus an annoying kid.
>>
>>223553388
It's too uneven
>>
>>223553388
You have to understand that, at that time, great movies came out every single year, sometimes every season.
>>
sonya blade was so fine in this
>>
>>223553388
One of the most underrated AC/DC songs was made for this soundtrack.

I remember being a young Anon at the time at the movie theater watching The Last Action Hero and telling myself "this is reddit."
>>
>>223553388

OP, it was at the start of the 90's era of post-modern deconstructivism where nothing could be sincere and had to be layered with ironic self-aware cynical detachment so the people doing it could make themselves feel like they're above the material/genre and compensating for the embarrassment they felt making it, just like Scream!!!FACT!!!
>>
>>223553388

Also, what I wanted was an R-Rated Jack Slater movie parody of action films in the style of Airplane!!!FACT!!!
>>
>>223553388
1, it was a family adventure about the mostly R-rated action genre for adults at the time of conservative pearl clutching and increased content warming labels. 2, invincible action heroes were oversaturated after dominating the 80s and filling cable TV + VHS in the 90s
>>
>>223553693
It becomes very dull and unfunny once they leave the movie world.
>>
I watched it for the first time a couple years back and I remember being bored of it. I love 80s/90s movies, even the cheesy ones. Tango and Cash is considered horrible writing, but the chemistry of Stallone and Russel is perfect. I've rewatched it a hundred times. Last Action Hero I can barely remember much from other than it was entirely too long. I just looked it up, 2 hours and 11 minutes, seriously? I can't remember a single joke other than maybe the 555 phone number one. I didn't like the locations. I didn't like the kid. I didn't like most of the story.

It could have been great, but I think most the ingredients in the recipe were bad.
>>
>>223553388
It came out immediately after True Lies, but was a wacky kids movie so the True Lies fans were pissed off.
>>
>>223560727
wut? how does that make sense? True Lies was also a wacky comedy..
>>
>>223560727
>It came out immediately after True Lies, but was a wacky kids movie so the True Lies fans were pissed off.

Last Action Hero was 93, True Lies was 94!

>>223560819
>wut? how does that make sense? True Lies was also a wacky comedy..

No, LAH was a "wacky comedy", True Lies was more of a comedy/drama/action film that balanced all three!!!FACT!!!
>>
>>223553388
Yes, there were two other people besides my father and brother and me.
>Why did people hate it at the time?
We werent ready to parody Arnold yet.
We wanted another Commando.
>>
>>223556170
>the movie flopped because the plot was confusing and weird.
aka audiences were full of double digit IQs like >>223556170
>the movie world is too cartoony with black and white characters and cartoon cats talking.
yes, that was the point. to show that the movie world wasn't real.

>the real world is like the city from SE7EN Or something horror
the real world was 1993 New York City which was not a nice place outside of the super rich parts of town.

>the villain was confusing because he was a nobody. a henchman. he didn't have a plan.
he literally spelled out his plan! his plan was to use the magic ticket to bring every evil villian from every movie into the real world to wreak havoc because in the real world, the bad guys can win!

just like they do in real life
>>
>>223560981
>Last Action Hero was 93, True Lies was 94!
And True Lies does a lot better even though it is also very comedic because it didnt parody Arnold himself.
>>
>>223556580
I saw this movie in the theatre and me and my family enjoyed it
>>
>>223559394
I remember turning on my smartphone in the theatre in 1993 posting on 4chan about it, those threads were lost to time
>>
McBane?
>>
>>223554744
Nah, that'd be An American Werewolf in London.
>>
Soundtrack was decent. Queensryche did the theme song I believe.
>>
>>223553388
The kid is so fucking annoyin in the first 40~ minutes
he gets better though
AI will make us the arnold hamlet movie
