it's unfilmable because the book is unreadable

Neither is the original Dune and all the "adaptations" prove it.
>>
Unfilmable books are really books where the writing is the main ingredient. They have tried to adapt The Great Gatsby for instance but it just comes across as simple or shallow on film. There's a Paul Newman movie called Sometimes a great Notion. It's okay but I read the book andi thought what was the point of the film? It's all about how the book is written making film as an option obsolete.

Being a worm just makes him immortal/very long lived.

The Spice does come from worms, but they aren't shown to have any intelligence, at least before Leto II.
It's been a while since I read the last two books, but I think Leto's consciousness is somewhat inside the worms that descended from him. It never amounted to anything since Herbert died before exploring it.

Ever had a book where this happened?

The Green Knight for me. I didn't care that they cast an Indian guy as Sir Gawain. What bothered me was basically everything else. The book isn't a spooky A24 horror story like the movie. It's fundamentally a tale of chivalry about a heroic knight, even if it is unusual in that the hero personally considers himself to have failed his quest, even though outwardly he succeeded and notably survives at the end unlike in the movie. The Gawain of the movie bears almost no resemblance to the one of the book in backstory, character, or motivation. The Green Knight was made by people who either didn't like or didn't understand the source material. So why adapt it at all? Was it like Starship Troopers where they already had a script in hand and then just slapped the name onto it and added some proper names from the book?

Yes and there have been three attempts at Dune as well, none of which have done it justice. Every attempt at a John Carter adaptation has been a travesty.

>>223562170
No it's really not. They wear some decorative silks and jewelry and leather harnesses for carrying weapons, and wrap up more when they need protection from the elements, but they don't bother at all with covering specific body parts for modesty. There's no way to adapt it faithfully without pretty frequent full nudity, and more or less constant partial nudity.
>>
>>223564194
>you humans are so weird why do you cover up your bodies? You should just be naked all the time like me, the exotic hot alien princess. I watched humans through my telescope, what are those weird things you have on your heads? A hat? No we don't do that in Germany.
50 pages later
>martians are wearing cloaks to survive the cold
>martians are wearing helmets in battle to protect their heads

ERB was a hack, and John Carter is a complete Mary Sue. There's literally no tension whatsoever, because you know that no matter what combat situation he gets put into ERB is going to drop his favorite line "because of his superior speed and agility due to Earth's higher gravity" and John will just win for free. I enjoyed the first book, but by book 2 he was already just phoning it in.

Also the movie was a completely fine adaptation.

I read this, and despite being one of the world's most popular fantasy fiction books, I found it an incredibly laborious read. Started off interesting but then got bogged down in exposition. Overall it kinda slumped in the middle, and when a new and interesting character was introduced in the second half it was like an entirely different story with basically a new set of characters. The ending was action-packed by pretty weird, like it was straying too far into some kind of experimental arthouse territory.

Just the length alone makes it unfilmable, but how you'd even get the different chapter tones to match makes it impossible. 2/10

Same. Clarke put that sequel bait line at the end of the first book and left lots of things ambiguous, so I thought the sequels might have cool ideas. There's almost nothing, it turns into a drama. I found out later out the sequel bait line was a throwaway and he had no other ideas for a sequel. I wish I knew that before.

The objective of western politics (specifically the U.S., UK, and Canada) has been to keep India infantilized as another source of cheap manufacturing labor a la China in the 80s and 90s. If they stopped empowering Hindutva radicals that want to ethnically cleanse India in exchange for the ‘promise’ of cheap labor, India could actually develop in a sustainable way. I’m not saying it’s the fault of the west that India is stuck as a third world shithole but it is a huge factor in why things won’t change until Europe and the U.S. rightfully fall into the multipolar world order that they’ve been fighting against for the majority of my adult life.

I think it’s very filmable. Even the Disney movie did a decent job capture of some of the visuals. It’s definitely possible to get the visuals down, just needs proper writing.

NTA but dude, it’s not supposed to be some deep novel. It’s a
>what will happen if Chad Gentleman went to mars, punched aliens to death, and bagged a red princess
And it fucking rocked. It’s okay to Mary sue when that’s the point of the story.

first one would be a mini series that is just a another story per episode

most books are unfilmable. a major value of books is seeing characters internal monologue and the authors narration. without that a lot of it is lost

There is a short sequence in the book where a 5 year old defends having sexual intercourse with adult male.

Hyperion is perfectly adaptable and even has enough brown people for today's studios but since it has been picked up by Apple you know there will be some gay shit and allegories for evil white males that have nothing to do with the source material and degrade any potential the show might have otherwise

It'd be a pretty easy ~40 minute short film, or shorter, it'd just not be all that interesting.

The multifaceted point of the monks not knowing the purpose/value of the original, the illumination "saving" it from being stolen might be a bit hard to get across but not really for a visual medium. the actual story is pretty crude and expositional by just telling him it was the copy being pretty that saved the real one with it's real value (as a grapplegrommit cutoff switch or something).

To drive it point home subtextually you'd likely have to make the endpoint "church" just a bunch of visually identifiable scientists to juxtapose to the monks and their copying of circuit diagrams without knowing what it is, then you can have him feel like he's failed at the same time the techpriests are deeply thanking him within the same scene.

Probably better animated, live action and it'd end up looking like a bloody Chronicles of Narnia.

I actually think it could be done. It would just become more generic. An old Sevarion writing a book of his life. Perhaps as an unreliable narrator. Visually, I would go for a 1970s matte painting and puppet/miniature vibe. Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, etc.

People tend to remember Animorphs more but Everworld was even more brutal.
