Now that the dust has settled, what do we think of Sideways?
Some exceedingly comfy wine drinking

Sideways is good shit. Thanks for reminding me to watch it again.

I like Beer and liquor but I just don't care for wine

I hate comedies that aren't actually comedies. No it's not witty or clever you're just a pretentious asshole who pretends fart jokes aren't funny so you never have one. Everyone yes... EVERYONE loves fart jokes if you claim that's not the case you're a fucking liar liar fart on fire.

it's a funny movie though
Paul Giamatti runs into a room where two people are having sex to steal back a wallet and the man chases him into the street with his dick flopping all over the place

Payne is a pain in the ass woke TDS case IRL but this is a very enjoyable film albeit completely implausible and the lead character is a scumbag who steals cash from his elderly mom.

This movie reshaped the wine industry.
> the 2004 movie Sideways caused a measurable drop in the price and demand for Merlot, a phenomenon widely known as the "Sideways Effect"

>"Pinot noir production in California has increased roughly 170 percent since Sideways was released," says wine industry analyst Gabriel Froymovich of Vineyard Financial Associates, noting that total wine grape production has increased 7 to 8 percent during the same time.
>"I think people who were into wine saw the passion for pinot noir in the movie, decided to explore that variety a bit, and realized how lovely a wine that grape makes."

Holdovers better

buying wine is easy.
you get the one that costs 10 dollars and is made nearby.
they all taste approximately same, any differences are negligible.

virginia madsen was so fucking hot in this. hot in everything, honestly

I watched that movie at my aunt's place when I was 13 or 14, she was surprised I enjoyed it since it's a 'mature film'. That's true, but I think it's just kino, well written, funny, believable.

Good point, and it's fortunate we got the ending we did, for comfiness' sake. In the dir's commentary, he says he originally filmed the final scene with Miles peering into Maya's windows after no one answers his knocks only to find the apartment empty and obviously abandoned: she had ghosted him. This would have been appropriate for the loser that Miles was, but he said that would have been too much and he wanted it to end on a hopeful note. Well played.
>>
>>223563089
Even Sandra Oh was hot in this, well kinda
>>
>>223559750
In the book, this scene was much darker and nigh unenjoyable: Miles was caught by the trucker who threw him into the pool, held him under and started to strangle him. Jack, waiting, but not asleep in the car, heard the commotion and rescued Miles from certain death. Minor detail: if you're trying to portray the home's occupants as working class white trash, they likely would not have had an in-ground pool.

I mostly feel the same. I LOVE spirits and what you can do with them and have dozens of bottles of various rums, whisky, gins, liqueurs, mixers etc. and drinks them straight and in all kinds of cocktails. I like some beer and enjoy it often enough and feel it's a practical drink that's nice when you want to be able to drink something fizzy and alcoholic without much sugar.

Wine is something where, I can recognize that certain people might legitimately be super into it, but I only enjoy a few of the wines I've tried and don't get what people see in it at large. It's such a finicky drink that's easy to fuck with with storage and oxidization and most of it just has a gross taste to me that makes it not worth drinking. Like, I'm super into Scotch in a way that's similar to how winos love their drink, but I don't have the tongue to get it.

a popular wine professional decided to submit one of the cheapest and worst-tasting wines he could find to an international competition, and he ended up exposing the entire industry. Eric Boschman is a highly respected wine expert from Belgium. Since he wanted to prove that a lot of wine labels are simply the result of good marketing, he decided to work with a local TV program to come up with an experiment. They literally went out of their way to find the cheapest and least palatable supermarket wine they could, paying just $3 for it. But to make it seem super fancy, Eric made up a background story for the wine, citing its high-quality indigenous grapes and even cooking up some fake lab data.

With the TV program's help, Eric also put together a marketing campaign in which he lavishly praised the wine to any of his fellow professionals who would listen. After finally submitting this $3 wine under the fancy fake name Château Colombier, they were surprised to discover that they had actually won first place. Despite the Gilbert and Gaillard International Wine Competition being considered very popular and prestigious, the judges never background-checked anything and simply praised the wine as "silky and fresh" with a "rich and pleasant palate." The judges then informed Eric that he could now place the prestigious gold stickers on his bottles as a sign of quality, as long as he paid the 60 euros it cost for a thousand of them.

That's more of a new thing. Competitions have existed for quantifying expertise and help to improve products and processes. It's just that people have learned that you can stack a lot more events into a competition for marketing and networking. It's been taken to the point where now* some competitions exist solely as a front for that purpose.

Its an absolutely fine movie, but it doesn't have any strong visual identity or tone that makes it worth recommending to anyone.

>strong visual identity or tone
Those aren't the only reasons people watch movies

I despise toilet humor and I plap femboyboys. Now, granted, femboys aren’t gay, but that is a point of contention- nevertheless thoughbeit there is still some busting of the crustal region, per se. YMMV

No, but it makes something memorable

Lots of people remember this movie and recommend it. Seems like a silly metric to use for whether or not to recommend something.

The scene where he starts chugging the wine from the spit buckets is the single most disgusting thing ever put on film.

For a very brief period of time I remember Mt. Dew had a sangria flavor, which was actually great, but I only saw it in the store twice before it vanished, and I think it was only ever a regional thing to start with.
Perfectly balance of tart and sweet.

In the context of the movie, it wasn't a spit bucket; it was just a bucket to dump the rest of the wine you were smapling if it turned out you didn't like it. Still gross to drink it, but not really that much. The director made the tasteful choice to change it from a spit bucket to merely a dump bucket; and unless you're actually a pretentious, snooty winetaster yourself, you'd never know that those buckets are actually meant for spitting than pouring leftovers like an old English pub that'd sell the leftover swill to drunkards at half price.

Thats not a call-me-a-cab.
The point of the drink is that its HUGE, pure booze, with enough sugar to make it go down a drunk chick's throat without trouble.
It was at some bar on Ocean drive in Miami.

In all fairness merlot is pretty ass. I really thought growing up that red wine looked so much better than white but as an adult I realize it's pretty much all look and whites taste much better. Pinot Grigio or chardonnay for me. If I'm gonna drink red it's gonna be a blend as merlot and pinot noir disgust me and cab sav is barely passable.
