That’s because the danger is only real for Loomis. In the clip from Joker, Arthur finds it funny to scare Gary because he knows he means him no harm, but it goes deeper than that, even. Arthur finds violence and death funny because to him, the vast majority of other people aren’t real, either. Gary’s an exception, because in the whole of Arthur’s life, he’s one of the few people who ever treated Arthur with kindness and decency. We deserved a better sequel than what we got.
