I watched this movie

Did the machine really duplicate him, or was it another trick? I was expecting there to be a grounded explanation on how he does it

It’s supposed to be magic level Tesla science. Which has some thematic weight of the relative techniques of the rivals.

This. The point was Tesla's technology was so advanced it was basically "real" magic. It was really making duplicates.

Kinda like how a simple lighter would seem like magic to a caveman

Think of it in relation to The Sting.

It's about a group of people (in this case magicians, not con artists) that have their own language (for tricks/cons) and rule no1 is never share your trick (except for a carefully chosen apprentice). From there it's very much getting by on your own wits, even with the support of a senior "member."
In The Sting it's like a whole towns' worth of flimflam men, they come out of the woodwork to pull off a big job. In The Prestige, the story is very tightly written around the two leads.

In the prestige, there is the simple obvious answer to the magic trick that no one can accept because it is beyond their belief (no evidence for something outrageous, well unless you are a magician dedicated to the bit/craft). So the other magician keeps searching and searching until he discovers real magic, done by a real magician and realizes how small he really is. And yes, that is a real cloning machine.
That's why he says he never knows if he is the prestige or the man in the box. But he is so desperate that he doesn't care.
Ya know how the rest goes. It's all there, if you seriously don't get it; if the movie is beyond your comprehension then no one can help you. You can be given the answer and still get it wrong because you are too incompetent.

Think about how no one's going to read that.

This was a giant shitpost movie.
It was all about Hugh Jackman trying to get doubles artificially but it turned out Christian Bale had doubles (his twin) all along.
Every time I remember this I laugh like an idiot.

thanks, you unlocked the truth and now i never need to think about this movie again

>I was expecting there to be a grounded explanation on how he does it

The point of the movie isn't the reveal itself, it's the character's search for the unknown because he can't accept a simple truth and the lengths he goes to; including killing himself

The smart thing about the movie is that it's a parallel to people who miss the point of magic because they're so hang up on wanting to know how it's done. The irony (or maybe they knew this would be happen) is that it extended to those same people missing the point of the movie

Fun movie. I rewatch it often, but my god, it's stupid.

The machine doesn’t work.

This story has nested narrative voices, and none of them are 100% reliable because all of them are keeping secrets and only one of them is primarily speaking to the audience. They are, in order:

>Angier: Opening narration - “Are you watching closely?”
This is the only narrative voice unequivocally speaking to the audience. This is the only time it’s heard.
>Cutter: Explains the phases of a magic trick. It is speaking to the “jury,” which may or may not include the audience.
It tells the bulk of the story. It is the final voice we hear.
>Angier’s journal: Read by Borden in prison.
This journal is written specifically to taunt Borden without revealing the truth.
>Borden’s journal: Given to Angier after he buries “Fallon.”
This was Borden faking out Angier. We know it's fake for two reasons - Borden’s trick in no way involved Tesla and Borden’s “method” was determined before he even knew Tesla existed. Interestingly, it is also the first clue we have that indicates how good Angier’s “showmanship” really is. It’s good enough to fool Borden into believing Angier really is from America.

Now with all that established, let’s turn to why the narrators are unreliable. We’ve already touched on Angier’s and Borden’s reasons, but what of Cutter’s? Well, he states outright in his courtroom testimony that he doesn’t want to reveal the secret because he wants to sell it. He reveals the secret of the water escape to the judge, but that’s not the trick he’s interested in selling. The trick he’s really protecting is Angier’s “Transported Man,” which he simply tells him is no trick at all.

And here’s my personal take. We’re told at the beginning and the end that magic tricks have three parts. I think that plays into the narrative voices - 1, 2, 3; A(ngier), B(orden), C(utter). But what of the fourth voice? That’s open to interpretation, but to me, that outermost voice, Angier’s voice that’s heard at the start of the film, is the “magician’s” voice, and that magician can either be looked on as Angier’s or Nolan’s own, as he is, after all, the “magician” performing this particular magic trick. Like any magician, that voice isn’t interested in truth; it’s interested in presentation, showmanship, misdirection, because as Borden says, “The secret impresses no one.” So in the final analysis, it cones down to what you want - truth or illusion? Do you want the mundane mechanics or do you want to be fooled?

Oh holy shit. Thank you for this.

thats the beauty of it tho. imagine two people dedicating their whole life to a single thing as one person. then you end up ragebaiting a fellow autist into destroying his life over it.

retard
think of the last shot of this movie, after the "unreliable narrator" is dead

But he’s not. Cutter narrates the ending.
