I had no expectations of more LoTR movies (or shows) after RoTK. So if they want to make shit I don't care, apart from the fact it's consuming capital that could go to original ideas or adaptations we haven't seen before (but considering the current state of Hollywood that is rarely better)
>>
>>223586159
The picture that's beginning to form with Gunn, Colbert, etc seems to be business as usual meaning Skydance will just build up more and more losses. I don't see a future here. Real shame as this could have been a great opportunity for disruption.

They are quickly turning LOTR into Star Wars with low-quality over-saturation. It's really sad but it's pretty remarkable how identical the trajectory is.
>kino trilogy
>meh to bad prequels
>absolute dogshit corporate OC
>the prequels don't seem so bad anymore
>more doghsit
>the IP eventually becomes a joke
they just speedran it this time
>>
>>223586315
That is what happens with every popular franchise. It's milked to the point it doesn't make any sense anymore and people lose interest in it.

Right now the only franchise that has a future is Dune because there are more story to make movies. The rest are all pretty milked.
>>
>>223586315
The difference is that you'll always have the books.
>>
>>223586315
>the prequels don't seem so bad anymore
The Hobbit movies have zero redeeming qualities. They're more the sequel trilogy than they are the prequels if we're going to come to Star Wars. Just a boring, shitty cash grab.

that's Tolkien's estate and Amazon's fault.
WB has no control over what they do.

fortunately no one even considers RoP canon so the damage is minimal.
>>
>>223586571
When you think of the amount if Tolkien autists who could have managed the estate, but it was likely given to some committee of troons, it makes me so mad.
>>
>>223586563
>They're more the sequel trilogy than they are the prequels
no one thinks this
>>
>>223586563
Unexpected Journey is a 6/10 stock at worst and the major fan edits of the trilogy make it a single solid 7/10 film. Far from irredeemable.
>>
The Hobbit films are grossly underrated, yes they have problems but they don't deserve the rabid hate.

I grew up with The Return of the King back in 2016.

Star Wars prequels and The Hobbit trilogy were never bad. It's just a case of nostalgiafags with impossible expectations. Not as good as what came before and not without flaws, but perfectly enjoyable movies.
>>
>>223586878
They are objectively and obviously worse for the simple fact that they rely on CGI in places where practical effects in the originals looked better. Lucas and Jackson were both effects nerds to their detriment.

But why make another so soon? Wasn't the last trilogy basically as good as Hollywood is able to? I can appreciate the Colbert probably wants something more true to the books, but that won't necessarily make general audiences pay to see it.
>>
>>223588628
>I can appreciate the Colbert probably wants something more true to the books
nigger Colbert's movie is going to be about Sam's daughter going on an adventure where she fights Barrow-wights and meets Tom Bombadil
>>
>>223586112
>We lost
The box office will say otherwise. And the movie audience doesn't want some prick writing what he decided that Tolkien would have done.
>>
>>223588351
I naively believed the financial result of movies like that along with the enormous debt and global sociopolitical trends especially amoung young guys would force a change of strategy. I underestimated just how deep their ideological extremism goes.
>>
>>223586878
I might be giving Lucas too much credit but if you grew up with them you saw PM as a kid, AotC as a teen and RotS as a young adult so maybe some people might find them relatable?
Hobbit was a cash grab but it was based on the simpler stuff Tolkien had written, reason it is more like Narnia.

AotC sucked hard but it served as the basis for 3 good shows and one superb videogame, so it is vindicated.
I watched PM in theaters after watching RotJ, I did not get the hate, I thought SW was meant to be family friendly, did the neckbeards at the time memoryhole the fucking ewoks of the previous movie?
>>
>>223586112
We'll always have the books and the OG trilogy. That's all you really need from LoTR.
>>
>>223589794
The M4_ fan edit of The Hobbit BRD is acceptably watchable.
>>
>>223586159
As long as Amazon owns it, it's going to be bad. Same curse Star Wars has under Disney.
>>
>>223586809
Well yeah but it's not what they did.
>>
>>223586563
>The Hobbit movies have zero redeeming qualities.
They did have that one catchy song and I don't remember any blacks in them.
>>
>>223586112
Colbert is a total nerd for Lotr. At a minimum he’ll respect the lore
>>
>>223586610
>fan edits of the trilogy make it a single solid 7/10 film.

This. The Maple Films edit turns it into a decent little adventure movie about the length of Return of the King EE. If anything comes of the Gollum and Colbert movie, I have no intention of watching them beyond hoping that maybe some shots might able to be edited into an "Extended Extended Edition" fan edit of Fellowship.
>>
>>223590866
If Maple Films is 7/10, then M4_ would be 8/10.
>>
>>223590390
>I don't remember any blacks in them.
They didn't give them lines but Lake Town was half black for some reason
>>
>>223589690
>Hobbit was a cash grab but it was based on the simpler stuff Tolkien had written, reason it is more like Narnia.
The problem was it wasn't enough like Narnia. They wanted something big and epic they could milk for several movies like LotR, but the Hobbit is a very simple story aimed at a young audience with a lighter tone. In the book you don't even get to see the big epic battle at all because Bilbo gets knocked out and sleeps through the whole thing. They were unwilling to commit to just adapting it as is and so the whole thing is a fucking mess and a tonal nightmare.
>>
>>223586315
The old world chucks. Sneed it, if you have to.
>>
>>223586601
The estate was previously owned by his son and he was protective of the ip and wouldn't let them produce anything that didn't exist in the books, but he died and now it's lotr cash grab time
>>
>>223586878
Counterpoint: you didn't know the difference because you were a child when you saw them for the first time, and were easily dazzled by loud noises and a lot of shit happening on the screen.
>>
>>223590894
I haven't seen it, so I can't comment. What's the difference?
>>
>>223590897

>>
>>223591088
You could say the same about the people that watched the OT when they were teenagers and then compared them to the prequels.
>>
>>223586315

I don't know why I'm bothering to correct you since I don't think you care about facts, but these latest wb films, and the amazon series is BECAUSE the rights are on lock down
>In the 60s or whenever, interest in making lotr films
>rights get sold to a bunch of people and are then traded back and forth
>eventually miramax bought the rights to the original 4 books (lotr and the Hobbit) - and then new line cinema get the rights off them (which gave them to wb) and the films are finally made
>Christopher hates the films and thinks they tarnish the franchise
>refuses to license the Silmarillion or any other works
>Wb and Tolkien estate on bad terms
>slowly get better
>Estate can't unmake the Jackson films but legal clusterfucks mean the rights are in question again
>sells the tv rights to amazon
>Still refuses to let ANYONE have any other rights
>wb can only make films based on those 4 books
>amazon can only make shows based on those 4 books
>so wb is now trying to adapt the untold parts of the books to milk it for all its worth
>meanwhile amazon were trying to be sneaky by making a Silmarillion tv show using the appendices from the lotr books
>amazon kind of shot themselves in the foot though because they specifically CANNOT adapt anything from the Silmarillion that isn't in the appendices (eg. Sauron's actual name)
>amazon are literally legally forced to make fanfiction
>wb think they can avoid nerd rage by sticking to just expanding on what Tolkien actually wrote

There is no fucking material in the search for gollum. They just want to recycle old popularly recognized intellectual property/ characters.

Except those were revolutionary for their time, and essentially rewrote the book on mainstream filmmaking moving forward. Unironic cultural impact. There is a distinct "Before Star Wars" and "After Star Wars". No one had done anything like that before.

What I will say about the prequels is that while they're not great, there are great things about them. John Williams still firing on all cylinders, great sound and general production design, and that's about it. The actual story and characters suck.

Likewise, LotR essentially did the same thing as the OT again, but for the 00s. Everything from Pirates of the Caribbean to Troy to Game of Thrones likely wouldn't have happened without it.

I'll say the same thing about the Hobbit trilogy as same with the SW prequels. It's watchable through fan edits, but id couldn't be more clear that it had 1/10th the planning or passion of the LotR trilogy, and it is bloated as a motherfucker. Jackson didn't even want to make it.

I don't hate the prequels or the Hobbit, but they are the cash-in temu version of their predecessors.

I'll throw the Jurassic Park sequels in there too. It makes you appreciate how much more that first movie was than just people running from CG dinosaurs.

Not trying to deny what you are saying but what did Lucas did in Star Wars that was never done before? Wasn't the success of the movie mainly the special effects of the spaceships and the OST? I think that even Lucas said that the movie was a mess and was saved by editing and the studio only wanted to make it when they listened to the OST.

>The Hobbit movies have zero redeeming qualities
Martin Freeman was absolutely perfect as Bilbo and the Smaug speech was fantastic.

They're not the sequel trilogy equivalent though because none of the characters you like died or got retroactively fucked with in order to prop up some bland new female lead, Colbert's movie unironically sounds like just that. Hobbit Trilogy is pretty much 1-1 with the SW Prequels for a comparison.
>Original director comes back
