Yeah, but at what cost? It's not much of a victory.

Yes. Emphatically.
>>
>>223587935
How the FUCK did they manage to make a worse green lantern movie than this one? How the FUCK.
>>
Not even close. This movie is overhated, but to love it would be equally absurd. This is capeslop before that's all the made.

Lanterns the show is actually good.
>>
>>223588609
Lanterns is the worst piece of green lantern media of all time.
> no green
> no space action (Ryan reynolds actually goes to fucking space at LEAST)
> never see oa
> never see alien lanterns this is baseline
> never say the oath

I didn't really like lanterns but this movie is worse. I would sooner watch this over that lanterns show again though

What about any of that is bad? You're naming things you would've liked to see, but nothing that makes a good show. Like the 2011 movie has all of those things and is a bad movie. So that in and of itself proves that those are not the fundamental requirements or markers of quality.

What makes a good show, is good story-telling and an interior logic that never betrays itself. Multilayered characters, fascinating arcs, blah blah blah. It's why to this day the best Spider-Man movies are still the Sam Raimi ones. Because those movies fundamentally care more about the story-telling and the emotional drive of the story than they do about the aesthetics or how quippy the main hero is.
>No Green
Plenty of Green
>No Space Action
Green Lantern *can* be very much about space action. The characters are versatile in that way. In the same way that Batman can be Adam West or Christian Bale. Depending on the take and intentions of the story. Plus part of the beauty of the whole shared universe experiment is that you can have both. But this show's mission was to invest you in the characters and the emotional story while giving a mystery that was still steeped in classic GL lore.
>Never see Oa
Damn, really wished a TV show on a TV show budget went out of its way to fuck up Oa visually for me so that Hal could shake hands with an easter egg reference
>Never see alien lanterns this is baseline
It's really not. The show is not about the Corps, it's about John and Hal. Like the space opera, you can incorporate that and its always open to do, and someone else may very well build that into the mythos, but it's not a requirement for making something good. As we can clearly see by the 2011 movie having those and not being any good.
>Never say the oath
I remember it alone from Episode 2 when Hal recharges for the first time. Pretty sure they do it at least once more besides John's remix at the end.
>>
>>223588776
Go be stupid somewhere else.
>>
>>223588786
You’re right green lantern isn’t supposed to be a tv show. How mentally retarded does a person have to be to look at green lantern and think, tv show.
>>
>>223587935
Yes, but that only shows how atrocious the woke shit out now is. It was a generic super hero origin story with, I'm sure, inaccuracies all over the place. But it did at least try to respect the source material and give us an entertaining movie.

>>223588875

Sorry, too much money laundering to have actual aliens appear in the actual space superhero show.
>>

>>223588766
The most recent one. Where they killed off Hal to get John.
Was really hoping the show wasnt going to copy that shit
>>
>>223587935
Not enough black excellence
>>
>>223590384
Hal was infected with Paralax and became evil. It's one of the major storylines he is known for. Everyone keeps getting mad at these adaptations pulling shit directly from the comics, and it stays funny.
They had never actually done that story in any animated project at that point too.

This movie had a very troubled production.

>WB wants to launch a DC cinematic universe to compete with Marvel, but can’t use Superman due to a rights issue and Batman because Christopher Nolan didn’t allow it.
>Chooses Green Lantern to be their Iron Man because he was very popular in the comics at the time and was an aviator (some producers believed that the Top Gun-esque military elements in Iron Man were the reason for its success).
>Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim - who would later create the Arrowverse - write an efficient standalone script that still sets up sequels (John Stewart, Guy Gardner and Alan Scott cameos) and alludes to a larger DC Universe (Superman and Batman references).
>WB expects the movie to be a hit and preemptively greenlights a sequel adapting “Sinestro Corps War”, with Berlanti & Guggenheim back on writing duties.
>Producers outline a four-movie plan, with the third movie adapting “War of Light” and the fourth movie adapting “Blackest Night”, and bring in comics writer Geoff Johns as a consultant.
>WB brings in studio-approved writers to revise the script based on Johns’ notes and make it more budget-friendly.
>Berlanti is initially in talks to direct, but WB gets cold feet about him handling such a big project as his first directing gig and decides to seek someone more experienced.
>George Miller, fresh off the failed Justice League: Mortal project, is offered the job, but turns it down as he is burned by JLM’s own production problems (a story for another thread).
>Enter Martin Campbell, an old school director of gritty, stunt-heavy action thrillers who agrees to helm a CGI-heavy adventure blockbuster for the paycheck.
>WB is very hands-on during filming, which Campbell is not used to. He begins clashing with producers a lot and feels creatively stifled, building up frustration.

>WB wants a big name as Hal Jordan. Chris Pine and Sam Worthington turn it down. Michael Fassbender auditions, but is passed over for being a then-unknown. Jared Leto and Justin Timberlake are also considered.
>Campbell wants Bradley Cooper, who is still gaining traction and didn't take his audition seriously at all.
>WB has their eyes on Ryan Reynolds, who is already popular and building up credibility as a dramatic actor, and casts him against Campbell’s wishes.
>Campbell antagonizes Reynolds throughout filming, reportedly forcing him to reshoot his scenes numerous times because he isn't good enough.
>Campbell favors Eva Green for Hal’s love interest Carol Ferris after working with her in Casino Royale. WB instead casts Blake Lively due to the popularity of Gossip Girl. Rose Byrne, Diane Kruger and Jennifer Garner were also considered.
>Pierce Brosnan is approached to play government agent Alan Scott, who wielded a prototype power ring during WWII, but the character is later replaced by Amanda Waller, the director of the DEO (Department of Extranormal Operations), so Waller and her organization can tie together all upcoming DC movies, like Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. in the MCU. Angela Basset is cast in the role.
>WB is convinced that they have the next Star Wars on their hands and want to push it further by making it a visual effects benchmark on par with Avatar. They decide that Green Lantern's entire uniform will be CGI, created through motion-capture technology.
>This proves to be more difficult - and expensive - than everyone thought.
>Campbell can't handle the production demands, fell behind schedule, and production quickly goes overbudget. Things begin to unravel.
>Warner realizes that they can't afford to make the movie as it was originally written.
>Emergency rewrites and last-minute reshoots are ordered to cut costs as much as possible.

>The studio halts development on the sequels and decides to remove all references to a larger universe, making it a standalone movie again.
>Big action setpieces are scrapped and replaced with less financially demanding versions (hence why Hal’s big fight against Hector Hammond amounts to them both writhing on the floor in pain).
>Parallax is changed from an ancient entity possessing Krona, a rogue member of the Guardians of the Universe, into Krona corrupted by the yellow light of fear and renaming himself just because.
>The entire final battle featuring Hal, Sinestro, Kilowog and Tomar-Re facing off against Parallax is cut and a smaller-scale fight between Hal and Parallax is cobbled together.
>The original ending where Parallax torments Hal, Sinestro, Kilowog and Tomar-Re with visions of their greatest fears, Hal inspires them to overcome them and the four together imprison Parallax in the Central Power Battery is scrapped in favor of Hal throwing Parallax in the sun to not sequel-bait too hard.
>Test-screenings are bad and WB realizes they have a potential bomb in their hands.
>In a last-ditch effort to drum up some interest, they include a post-credits scene of Sinestro stealing the yellow ring, even though without the setup of Parallax’s visions making him succumb to fear, it contradicts his entire character arc.
>WB still holds out hope they can get a public hit despite the bad buzz and negative word of mouth from professional critics.
>They don't. The movie bombs critically and financially.
>Green Lantern 2 is scrapped, and so is The Flash starring Chris Pine and Rachel McAdams, which Berlanti & Guggenheim were already writing to connect with this and cement the DC movie universe (They later turned their script into the first season of the CW series).
>The movie is later folded into the Arrowverse Multiverse as Earth-12.

The original script.

>There are only two lights: Green (embodies positive emotions, controlled by will) and Yellow (embodies negative emotions, controlled by fear).
>The Guardians accidentally create a yellow monster called Legion and lock it up, but it escapes and begins killing Green Lanterns.
>Abin Sur is attacked by Legion, crashes on Earth and passes the ring on to Hal Jordan.
>Hal is taken to Oa for training, but quits when Sinestro questions his ability to overcome fear.
>Alan Scott is the government agent who finds Abin Sur’s body and recruits Hector Hammond to study it.
>Hammond gets infected by the yellow light and becomes an evil telepath.
>Hal returns to Earth but still uses the ring to fight crime around the world. His first appearance is saving an air show from an out-of-control jet sabotaged by Hammond.
>Hammond doesn’t know either Hal or Carol Ferris in this version and is way more of an asshole who uses his powers to bully everyone who slighted him.
>Hal and Hammond fight at the Smithsonian and Hal figures out Hammond is infected by the yellow light, so he returns to Oa to ask for help.
>Meanwhile, Sinestro captures Legion and plans to make a yellow ring for himself.
>The Guardians refuse to help Hal because he didn't complete his training just as Legion escapes and begins wrecking Oa.
>Hal uses several rings at once to channel the full power of the central battery into a kill shot against Legion.
>Sinestro is so impressed he rallies the Corps to help Hal.
>Final battle in Hal against a horribly mutated Hammond while the GLs fight a fleet of drones programmed by Hammond to destroy Coast City.
>Hammond steals the ring, but it backfires and leaves him catatonic. Alan arrests him and encourages Hal to complete his training.
>Alan turns out to have been a GL in the 40s before the Guardians took his ring.
>The ring scans John Stewart, Guy Gardner and Clark Kent before choosing Hal.
>Superman is around but people don't know he's an alien.

The unproduced sequel.

>Hal has completed his training and is patrolling the universe with Sinestro.
>Convinced that the Green Lantern Corps has become ineffective, Sinestro has stolen the yellow power and used it to enforce a police state in his homeworld Korugar.
>Sinestro harnesses the Yellow Light of Fear and begins assembling the Sinestro Corps, which includes Arkillo and Amon Sur, son of Hal's predecessor Abin Sur.
>Sinestro offers Hal a place in the Sinestro Corps, but Hal refuses. Sinestro then imprisons him and attacks Oa in order to destroy the Green Lantern Corps.
>Hal manages to escape and sabotage Sinestro's plans, forcing the Sinestro Corps to retreat to Korugar.
>The Guardians refuse to allow Hal to pursue them, but Hal rallies the remains of the Corps to confront Sinestro.
>Antecipating this, Sinestro kidnaps Hal's girlfriend Carol Ferris and holds her hostage in Korugar.
>While the Green Lantern Corps fight the Sinestro Corps above Korugar, Hal, Kilowog and Tomar-Re infiltrate Sinestro's base of operations and rescue Carol.
>Kilowog battles Arkillo, while Tomar-Re fights Amon Sur and Hal confronts, defeats and arrests Sinestro, forcing the remains of the Sinestro Corps flee and regroup.
>Meanwhile, in Oa, the Guardians realize that Sinestro's actions have fulfilled an ancient prophecy and that the "War of Light" has begun.
>The remaining five lights begin choosing their bearers, and Carol is chosen by the Violet Light of Love to become the Star Sapphire.

The Flash spinoff

>Forensic investigator Barry Allen (Chris Pine) gains superspeed after being struck by lightning during the explosion of S.T.A.R. Labs’ particle accelerator and learns how to control his powers with the help of S.T.A.R. Labs’ CEO, Dr. Harrison Wells.
>Barry is in love with his childhood friend, journalist Iris West (Rachel McAdams), whose family adopted Barry after Barry’s father was wrongfully convicted for the murder of his mother.
>Barry adopts the identity of the Flash to fight Leonard Snart, a mercenary armed with a cold gun capable of slowing him down who is eliminating S.T.A.R. Labs scientists on behalf of a mysterious employer.
>The employer reveals himself as Wells, who is in fact Eobard Thawne, Barry’s nemesis from the future who travelled back in time and killed Barry’s mother, but became stranded in the past, forcing him to engineer Barry’s transformation into the Flash in order to steal his speed to return to his own time.
>Barry arrests Snart before he kills Iris once she identifies him, defeats Thawne by trapping him in the Speed Force from where they both harness their power, prevents a singularity created by Thawne’s experiments from destroying Central City, and also exonerates his father and finally avenges his mother’s death.
>Barry is later approached by Hal, who wants to recruit Barry for the Justice League.
>>
so is there any good Green Lantern shows/movies out there or is it select episodes of Justice League
>>
>>223587935
I tried watching it but it was way too boring. That said it's another case of "Okay this is bad, but the Tom Holland spideys are not only good, but great? Black Panther is one of the best movies of all time?"
>>
>>223587935
CGI in this looked comically bad even considering the time it came out.
The main villain was lame
Ryan is a terrible actor with zero charm
Sinestro was good but wasted in the role
>Start off with Hal already a GL
>Sinestro is his old friend
>movie ends with big twist that Sinestro is a heckin bad guy
the end.
Put Qwards in there or something like Sinestro was working for them to make a Yellow Lantern.
(so you could set up a sequel with Yellow Lantern Corps if you wanted)

I'd recommend Green Lantern: The animated series (2012). It still holds up quality wise. Dunno why DC just gave up on animation as a medium, their character roster is just perfectly suited for family friendly kid stuff. Are they allergic to success or something?

fuck no
if lanterns is a barely polished turd this this is a flaming mess with ryan reynolds just acting like he does in every movie

dc wanted to put all their eggs in one basket with the dceu so the only animation we got is the dcamu, which is actually pretty decent
