Its bizarre that they set Star Trek II 12 years after The Motion Picture. TMP was all about "KIRK BACK IN ACTION" and then the immediate movie after was then about "Kirk is old and washed up"

12 years in space is the same as 50 years on Earth.

>they set Star Trek II 12 years after The Motion Picture
They did? Huh, kinda makes me glad. Explains the new uniforms.

I had to look it up and see because the movie came out 3 years later but everything in the movie felt like a massive timeskip

There's no good way to reconcile TMP and TWOK's discussions about the Enterprise.
A lot of fans, including me, consider TMP to be non-canon.

12 years is a good second life after their first mission.

If TMP had come out in the mid 70s, the rest of the movie timelines work out fine. TWOK in the 80s makes sense given the actors ages. If anything Kirk was too old to be a space cowboy hero by the time Motion Picture was done
But like you say, removing that movie completely makes everything else work
