Any other cases of a director starting out with a genuinely excellent debut film and never being able to make anything nearly as good?
>>
The Village is great. I miss when M Night made extremely sentimental movies with horror elements.
>>
There is no bad Night movie. He's the last auteur. The last real nigga.
>>
>>223593386
Timmies could never make this.
>>
>>223593438
I didn’t care for Split and Glass is fucking retarded.
>>
>>223593438
tarantino is the last auteur

shamalyan is legitimately good. signs is absolutley legit peopele were just too retarded to even make the holy water connection let alone the daughtet angel man reclaiming his faith theme.

split and unbreakable was solid. glass was good too. the happening really fucked him at a crucial time of his career
>>
>>223593386
Welles' first film as director was Citizen Kane. I doubt anyone can top that fall off.
>inb4 Touch of Evil

>>223593477
It's really his own fault for allowing Marky Mark to star in it. With another, actual actor it could've been maybe not great but better than something that Marky Mark starred in.
>>
>>223593386
Bruce Willis watches this every day, and the twist works every time.
>>
>>223593516
That would be funny if the only time he remember he was Bruce Willis is when the twist is revealed. And Bruce becomes his old self for two mins before the dimensia takes back over.

Like the ending of The Notebook. Hilarious!

>tell my parents I’m about to watch the Sixth Sense for the first time, knowing nothing about it
>mom says “you know he’s dead, right?”
>dad gets mad at her
Luckily I thought she meant the kid, so I was still somewhat surprised at the end.

I loved ruining movies for people but it’s really difficult to do these days.

Unbreakable was his best movie.

lmao
>>
>>223593738
What’s funny is I had heard that song 3 years earlier when it came out but I was too retarded for it to spoil me. I thought it meant he died at the end so that’s why he was dead.
>>
The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars. And Donnie Darko I guess that too.
>>
>>223593386
Unbreakable, Signs, and Split were also very good, however. I would say Unbreakable and Signs are indeed nearly as good as The Sixth Sense.

I got this movie spoiled for me too. I overheard my mom saying "I couldn't believe he was dead!" or something, and so it was ruined for me years before I finally watched it.
>>
>>223593386
Guy Ritchie stretched it to two good films.

The village was good as well.

I have a soft spot for M Night movies but his Avatar movie is genuinely fucking awful
>>
>>223593434
>The Village is great
No it isn't. Unbreakable was good but it aged poorly.
>>
Unbreakable is good. Signs has good moments but some weird/bad shit brings it down. The Village is good until they reveal the "twist" that you could see coming from a mile away. After that it's one disaster after another.
>>
>>223599090
How could you see the twist coming in the Village?
>>
>>223593503
Never insult Marky Mark in front of me.

I will fuck you up motherfucker. Give me your address, if you've got the guts. I'll be on the next flight over.
>>
>>223599173
I think if you don't know M Night, it might work -- the problem is the reputation starting creeping in and people started trying to predict his movies moreso than any other directors films.
>>
>>223593386
I didn't even think Sixth Sense was that good. It was fine, but not this amazing movie people act like it is.

Signs, The Village and Unbreakable are all really engrossing and fun, I enjoy them. Split is OK, and the first half of Glass is interesting, the second half clearly suffered from Bruce Willis not being well enough to do the movie, which really sucks. Though I imagine the ending was staying the same and it was, to be desired.

>Lady in the Water
>The Happening
>Last Airbender
>After Earth
This is like, some kind of record for 4 major releases from a previously academy award nominated director just shitting the fucking bed full of diarrhea.

>>223599444
Correct. There's no way he could have ever topped THX 1138. What was he thinking?

You can get a sense for his weird stitled writing early in his career. I rewatched Unreakable recently, and although I still really liked it, the 'friends don't shoot friends!!' scene was cringe.
I think he just couldn't handle both directing and writing his movies.
>>
>>223593600
Women are so stupid. She probably has a parasitic entity attachment that is working through her to ruin things for you.
>>
>>223593386
Kelly with Donnie Darko (he couldn't even make a director's cut without massacring it).
Less extreme but Lawrence Kasdan started with Body Heat which is a classic neo noir and has churned out slop since, although his second movie (big chill) was still fine.

>>223593490
>>223595778
Welles made many great movies and even if you found Citizen Kane to be the better (which is far from obvious) it wouldn't fit OP which wants true fall off.
