The next season he gets marooned in the past and instead of hiding out in the woods like is policy, he looks up the actual girl and using his knowledge about her, is able to start up a relationship with her that leads to marriage and kids. When the captain finds out that his best friend is happy, he get angry and demands he come back to the Orville and never see his wife and kids again. Gordon says no so they take him by force and erase the life he built in the past.
