I liked the ending to Something Wicked This Way Comes when I finished it the other day. Specifically all the stuff Charles did to save the boys and defeat Dark. I thought the whole "laugh him back to life" thing with Jim was a little weak, but it's the end of the story and the narration at least paid a little lip service to the fact that he did loop around the merry-go-round a few times before falling off so it's not like that ruined anything. It just felt like we hadn't reached the climax when we start going through the motions of the resolution.
Anyway, tonight's episode is "The Alternative Factor". See you in an hour.

Kirk was 100% in the wrong in This Side of Paradise and I was pissed off watching him ruin a beautiful peaceful utopia. I would live on that planet.
>>
>>223594892
An innovative new take on the Jekyll & Hyde formula with the first mention of parallel universes. I presume that Lazarus locked in combat with his insane counterpart for eternity means that there aren't going to be any travels to the anti-matter universe in the future.
Robert Brown's portrayal of Lazarus & anti-Lazarus was so strong that I was able to overlook the cheap set of whiskers they stuck on him. And those scenes of him fighting against the fundamental force of the Corridor opening was more entertaining than the fisticuffs inside the Corridor between the duo of alternates.
Out of the episodes I've watched thus far, this one had the most gripping "exposition conversation" of them all, when Kirk & Spock are in the briefing room slowly piecing together Lazarus' true nature. As usual, it's something I picked up on a bit quicker due to it being a 60 year old show where the concepts aren't new anymore, but they shot & wrote this particular scene really well. As was the case for Kirk's last conversation with anti-Lazarus and his final words of mourning for his fate.
>>223595919
When Sandoval comes to his senses, he realizes he and his men have accomplished nothing and laments the years wasted there. The spores lobotomize their hosts, it's no way to live permanently. Like I said when I watched it a few days ago, it'd work great as a healthcare treatment if they could just harness the Berthold Rays. Probably great for mental health too, to give Vulcans who want a taste of emotion the chance to try it, though it probably only worked on Spock due to his half-breed physiology.
>>
>>223596120
>When Sandoval comes to his senses, he realizes he and his men have accomplished nothing and laments the years wasted there

Why do we need to "accomplish" things, exactly?

Neelix. One of the Best Characters in Star Trek.
An emotional 'sode.
>>
>>223596128
Yes, yes. "We only accomplish things for fulfillment, and the spores fulfill everything without the work of accomplishment." Those who have no aspirations would welcome the ability to feel pure delight while continuing to do nothing like they always have, but for those of us who do want to leave our mark in some way, the scenario is a nightmare. And everyone who is released of the spores' influence in the episode is grateful for it, even Leila.
>>
>>223596148
Why do you need to "leave your mark" on something? You are a glory hound and a big baby, just like Kirk. He literally got angry looking at his medals, realizing his awards and rank would mean nothing down there.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEaicg1kYMk
>>
>>223596161
His medals reminded him of his incredible capacity to make change, to be a prime mover in the universe. It reminded him of some random peace treaty he oversaw, or a colony he saved from disaster. Positive impacts he made in the lives of others that he'd no longer be capable of doing if he just wiled away all his years with the Lotus Eaters. But again, someone who believes they'll never have that same beneficial influence would be fine leaving behind not just a life but an entire universe that means nothing to them.
Even if we could fit all of humanity on Omicron Ceti III, then what would become of all the other members of the Federation? Of all the worlds which could potentially join or at least be saved? Hell, today's episode is the prime example: if Kirk had packed up and joined them then the universe had 50/50 odds to be the one annihilated by the two Lazaruses meeting up outside the Corridor.
>>
>>223596241
>His medals reminded him of his incredible capacity to make change, to be a prime mover in the universe
Some people value peace of mind and happiness more than leaving a mark on history. Perhaps you wouldn't get it.
>>
>>223596259
I'm saying that both have value, and going down to than planet forsakes one to drown yourself in the other. I haven't gotten there yet, but do you honestly believe that Kirk didn't spend his last moments under that bridge with the same peace of mind the spores gave him, knowing he had done so much good up to his last breath? Perhaps even a greater joy than anything artificial they pump through the hypothalamus. It's you who doesn't get anything. You're welcome to leave for that place of comfort at any time, but don't claim superiority to those who have the gumption to stay behind and tough it out to their own happiness, and that of the many.
>>
>>223596333
>ou're welcome to leave for that place of comfort at any time

They're not fans of Star Trek. They are fans of "representation". They want media to be a mirror where they can see themselves looking back and they don't care what that mirror was meant to be -- Lord of the Rings, Star Wars. Doesn't matter. They just want to see their fat, ugly, trannoid face reflected in everything.

It's just boilerplate narcissism really -- a need for everything to be about you.

It's amazing to me how much time they dedicate to this Poochie-ass character in the final season of DS9. Isn't there a war going on? I'm more than halfway through the season and it might as well be renamed the "Vic & Ezri Show". At least with Ezri I can understand the reasoning behind it.

>nobody can act if their life depended on it
seriously what was this. The captain excepted, the rest were I guess all budget savings. T'Pol's job was to be a Vulcan bimbo but she barely managed that, the British guy is honestly the worst acting and character development I've seen on all Trek, except the black pilot guy, who i guess isn't even on main cast? I can't even remember their names.
Hoshi was sorta cute, Trip - now that I think about it - actually did have some character development with the T'Pol plotline, and space to act. The doctor was also halfway cool, he somehow had good vibes.

I'm confused about this show, it had somewhat decent plots, especially in the 3rd and 4th season, but the cast and characters, man... At least Archer was genuinely good, a person who I would be honored to be my captain.
>>
>>223605175
>except the black pilot guy, who i guess isn't even on main cast?
He's meant to be. His name rolls in the opening credits with the rest of the main bridge crew. Just at some point Enterprise says "fuck that shit lol" and reverts to a TOS style trio with Archer, T'pol, and Tripp.
I agree that Blalock is a terrible fucking actress, startlingly so after how good her preceding bimbo was in Seven of Nine's actress Jeri Ryan.

Archer at least in season 1 comes off as a nice guy from the office who does water polo on the weekend. He’s not the type I’d want as captain on a dangerous space mission, although that might be from how bland the show is overall.
>>223605230
I like how everyone always brings up how Jeri Ryan’s a good actress. It’s completely true and and Picardo carry VOY by the end, but everyone says it because she was clearly hired to primarily be a piece of ass
>>
>>223605583
She definitely was hired to be a piece of ass but it wouldn't have worked if she didn't have chops. All of the focus on her character never feels forced because it's good shit and a Seven episode is always welcome, just like a Doctor episode.

Whereas if it's a Kim or a Paris episode, the other elements of the episode also need to be good. I think Tom gets a lot of good episodes as well though.

But why do you star trek?

Some people are fascinated by the tech and the speed and the distance a ship can cross, they like the idea of being useful in engineering.

I'm captivated by away missions, waking up in a new city, being thrown into the unknown and having to find a path no one's walked before. I know that's me searching for a purpose in life, or wanting to be be told by a higher authority there's a purpose beyond the meaning I define for myself.

To me that's the purest form of trek, staying on the ship and only seeing aliens through viewscreens would seem unfulfilling.

That shitty ReAction line did the holodeck versions of those characters. I bet anything holodeck is a "make money printer go brrrr" release and the carrot on the end of the stick for a lot of collectors.

Sailor Geordi in Nacelle's wave 2 comes with a giant holodeck arch, so they're signaling where they want to take the line.

>>223612026
The greatest tragedy written for the show so far. The flows and eddies of time, as Spock describes it, must necessarily pull them to Edith as had happened to Bones, and it's only through the close proximity with her for a week's time that Kirk had the opportunity to grow attached.
The Act-break Cliffhangers are really strong here, every one hits the height of tension: Bones rushing off in his paranoid episode for the cold-open, Act 1 ending with "We're totally alone." and the pan-up to the empty stars where the Enterprise should be, Act 2 opening with the lines "Captain's Log: No stardate. For us, time does not exist.", the closer of Act 2 raising the question of whether Edith has to die to save the future, and Act 3 answering that with a definitive "Yes".
It's an incredible prescience that McCoy's lunatic ravings about "killers and assassins" lines up with the role Kirk finds himself thrust into, even if we never get a scene of him trying to defend her from Kirk because he's snapped out of his funk by the time they reunite. I absolutely loved the start of the comedown, when he's talking to that bum about the horrors of 20th century medicine. "All the needles & sutures, sewing people up like garments, all the terrible pain!" I suppose the bum then stealing his phaser and accidentally killing himself with it is foreshadowing for Bones saving Edith's life? It clearly doesn't impact the timeline at all, according to the Guardian of Forever (by the way, great performance by Bartell LaRue here, I thought it was Harlan at first since he did a lot of voice acting for his own works), so I can't think of why else it happens, other than just to have it happen. Huh, and apparently it got cut out of the original broadcast too. I never bothered to check if anything was edited out prior to this episode, maybe I'll do that on Thursday since I'm watching the season finale tomorrow.

The makeup was brutal for him. The magog hair was yak hair, combine that with latex and hot studio lights and it's miserable.
One more reason why Marc Alaimo is based, in Indiscretion he was in full Cardassian latex makeup and wetsuit uniform, on location in 100 degree heat with nowhere for the sweat to go, and he just powered through it.

I find the development of action figure articulation fascinating. The first official Superman toy released in 1939 was a hand carved wooden doll, more like a puppet, and 100 years later there's an arms race between half a dozen companies trying to outdo each other with articulation, detail, and shelf presence. But their progress doesn't matter because fuckers will break them down and 3D scan all the joints and pieces and anyone with a printer can make their own version, so it's a waning industry kept alive by an aging market.

I'm really interested in where this is all going. It's obvious things are circling the drain for the major companies like Hasbro and Mattel, and what's taking their place isn't some hot new buck ready to fuck, it's cheap kits and printing at home so collectors are becoming designers like old japanese karakuri puppet makers.

On one hand the collapse is a sign we're retreating into mindless oblivion because kids are more interested in tablets and phones and surrendering agency to something intangible that tells them what to enjoy, on the other it's turned into a creative hobby that lets people create their own paths and custom collections.

It's coming full circle with things being handmade instead of mass produced. It's one of the few things on this planet that give me hope for the future.
