I've been in love with this film for over a decade and it seems like it's starting to catch up with modern audiences.Post your favorite quotes, scenes, shots, and give your honest opinions on it or just go watch it.
Maybe in the end that’s all we have: the memory gospel.
>>223598011HQ schizo
>>223598237>Implying being schizo is le bad
>and it seems like it's starting to catch up with modern audiencesNo it's not, it's just you spamming the catalog.ST is like if a multibillionaire had a 9 year old son with a 90iq that loved snl, wwe, top 40 pop, and other normie shit, suddenly discovered David Lynch and watched all of his shit within a week, and wrote a script and his dad paid for him to make the movie. Its absolute retarded garbage. Cringecore.
>>223598256I forgive you.
ST (Cannes) > Donnie (Theatrical) > ST (Theatrical) >>> The Box >>> Donnie (Director's)
>>223598011This flick was way before it's time. It got shit because it mocks both sides as being corrupt clowns only interested in their own agenda while the world implodes.
>>223598352It's funny how both conservatives and liberals who like it seem to believe it's a satire aimed exclusively at the other side. I've always interpreted the film as being critical of modern democracy itself, but maybe that's just me.
>>223598383It definitely is. But I think the biggest theme is everyone looking in the wrong directions.
>>223598011How do people like this film, it's genuinely not that good, and yes I'm talking about the Cannes version.
>>223598431>How do people like this filmBecause we've got soul.
I read the comics before watching it for the first time in 20 years and it added a lot to the experience. Did you know Krista Now survived a plane ride because she is deeply psychic? Or that Serpentine is a sourceress who gave Boxer his tattoos?
>>2235980113 hours of quite a small story happening around several much bigger stories. it's weird how the main storyline of the film is also the most irrelevant one, the side stories are all parts of much bigger stories
>>223598465It seriously adds to the experience
>>223598465I find it to be a similar case to The End of Evangelion: it's a masterpiece that you can fully appreciate even if you have zero knowledge of the material that came before it. For me, the ideal order is to watch the theatrical cut first, then read the comics, and finally watch the Cannes cut. Also, as a huge fan of The Maxx, I absolutely love the graphic novel and the feel of the film with the way it captures that particular atmosphere.
>>223598256This. It's a retard being pretentious and is in the same ballpark as Ad Astra. Retards think it has depth because they can't recognize style over substance
>>223598554Why're you haters so mad at us loving it? There's really no other movie quite like it, you should at least recognize that it's special, even if you don't dig it.
>>223598577Because it was too deep for him. That's what any critique involving "pretentious" evolves from. The flick is anything but pretentious. It's a fucking comedy.
>>223598292Friendly fire.
>>223598505DO NOT RIDE THE ROLLERCOASTER
So what the fuck was fluid karma? They mine it from a serpentine trench under the world? Is it an extension of a higher dimensional being into our reality? is it the fucking lifestream?
>>223598695Seems to be some sort of “celestial fluid” loosely connected to Donnie Darko and The Box. Maybe like a dimensionally transcendent generative force.
>>223598720I've watched donnie darko and understand the parasite universe/time loop thing but I know nothing about the box how does this connect to fluid karma
>>223598758They used celestial fluids to teleport people into other realities or places.
>>223598826is it worth watching?
>>223598758I’ve only seen The Box a couple times, might watch it again soon. I’d say it’s less connected to The Box. In the description for the new 600 page Donnie Darko sequel book, it mentions “celestial fluid” which I obviously connected to fluid karma. Then there’s use of water-like material in The Box somewhat similar to the visualized arrows of time and bubble in which Frank appears in DD. I don’t want to spoil The Box, but if you keep in mind the specific ideas about ‘manipulated living’ and ‘manipulated dead’ in DD and apply it to The Box, I think it may make the story more clear. In ST fluid karma is I guess an energy source, but also allows those who inject it to connect telepathically, psychically. Some sort of manipulation of time-space, so it can teleport matter like a person or plane engine, and also connect people to a realm beyond space-time, perhaps to a dimensionally transcendent singularity, thus the psychic connection. Idk, something like that
>>223598879It's good, not at the level of the other two, but really how many films can be?
>>223598879if you like his other stuff yeahi'm not sure if i'd call it good as there is a pretty big gulf in quality overall but it's interesting and i didn't regret watching it
>>223598554>Retards think it has depth>>223598589>it was too deep for himCase closed, retard. Thank you for proving my point.
>>223598881ST isn't actually consistent with what exactly fluid karma is used for. It says it's a transmission medium with the actual energy being produced by some kind of tidal generator like Utopia 3 but then also says that the fluid karma produces energy when exposed to oxygen.>>223598902Well considering I was going to watch fucking spiderman I think I'll grab The Box instead.Oh and if the anon who told me the Cannes cut was better is ITT I'm sorry, the intro to the theatrical I think is better at getting you into the world by now showing how fucking deranged The Wizard Baron is immediately but overall the cannes cut is way better especially if you've read the comics
>>223598932Cannes cut is flawless, it's just that the intro of the theatrical is insanely engaging in comparison. That's why I always recommend watching that version first.
The really important question is why Boxer took a convertible into a rainy night is he stupid
Thanks, very coolhttps://www.salon.com/2007/12/19/southland_tales_analysis/
>>223599002pimps don't get rained on
>>223599138That whole pimp thing was fucking weird. Pimps are disgusting retards. I guess it is a comedy.
>>223598383Neo-marxists vs neo-fascists, and they expect me to side with either one? It’s all friendly fire in the end. >>223599135When I seek film analysis, I always check out what Salon has to say.
>>223599175The marxists aren't supposed to be the good guys, they're a bunch of insane 40+ weirdoes and freaks. There aren't any good guys. We're talking about a group whose motto "dethrone God" exist in a movie where Christianity is canonically (heh) the true religion. They're funded by the Baron to overthrow reality and remake it in his own image anyway.
The part in the finale where the marxist woman just makes out with that republican stooge guy was absolute kino
>>223599199I know they aren’t the good guys. I’m agreeing that people who think either side are the good guys are misguided. The only good guys were a handful of individuals who had the awareness, compassion, and courage to do what is right. Though all merely players and all fire always friendly fire.
>>223599212>what the hell is that?>it's an ice cream truckThe last 15 minutes or so might be my favorite sequence in the history of cinema.
>>223598879I loved it. The 70s aesthetic. Cinematography and set design is top tier.
>>223599390Christopher Lamberts casting was on point.
So it wasn't the world decelerating at all was it. It was because they broke the causal loop of sending boxer through the rift. The 0.0000006 thing was just Krysta being characteristically retarded and psychic. The context from the cannes cut that the riots were based on the killing - and who did that killing and why - make far more sense. >>223599423you CRO-MAGNON BITCH!
>>223599435Nah, it wasn't really about either. It was more about SWS's character. Boxer thought he was the center of the world, but they were just side stories.
>>223599907The two souls connecting thing ends the world but the world is going to shit because of boxer breaking causality. Otherwise why would they bother killing him?
>>223600019Because they thought he was the main character, anon. Literal Jesus. But it was actually Scott, which is why the world ends when he meets himself. >>223599390
>>223600065Fair enough
>>223598011Loony globohomo slop.Wasted an hour on this garbage.
>>223600658>globohomoQuite the opposite anon.
