My elementary school only ever had a single Indian girl who was only there for half a year. She smelled horrible and was really weird. Her parents lives in a really rundown home and they always had weird shit on the roof, like a refrigerator one day.

She stopped coming to school and I didn't have another Indian classmate until high school.

I feel like my experience was quite unique. Started kindergarten in 1995 in a Canadian town known for having an annual rodeo. It was a little sliver of white-folk heaven. But the school I attended was an "independent" school, K-12. One of very few of its kind. Which means it's expensive for parents.

By 1st grade, the class was about 40% East Indian. Word spread among the community about this school, and by 6th grade it was 70%. By the time I graduated, it was 85%.

When I go back to my hometown now as an adult, driving past the shops and my old school at the top of the hill... that 85% has become the statistic for the general population there, not just the school. It was a redneck town with a rodeo, people riding around on tractors. Now it's little India.

So I grew up with Indian people, it was always very normal to me. But can still acknowledge that it's gotten out-of-hand. My classmates were from rich families, children of doctors, lawyers, etc. and the 'cool kids' were pretty white-washed. But now it's a legion of Tim Horton's workers roaming our streets.

No, there were like 4 or 5 Indian kids in my school and all of them did Apu voice when they imitated their parents
