How come Dolph Lundgren failed to reach the same heights as other 80's bodybuilder actors like Stallone and Arnold?
>>223603256He took some time off to get a Phd.
>>223603256That it's very difficult to answer. Only someone that has followed his career closely could give you some answer.Maybe he didn't have a big success like Terminator or Rocky.
>>223603256also never did sappy socio-political struggling divorced dad movie john cena tier shit
>>223603256Too smartMan has a PhD in nuclear physics
Never got rid of his accent (and unlike Arnold's charming accent his just sounded autistic), wooden acting, bad at choosing projects thanks to his retarded agent and he was unironically too perfect looking making him completely unrelatable for the average person. People can relate and find something charming in Stallone and Arnold. Who the fuck can relate to a guy that looks like he came straight down from Mt Olympia to remind you how inferior you are in comparison?
>>223603360Bet he did wonders with that
>>223603360That spot could've gone to someone who'd actually use it
Hollywood was already starting to seethe about blonde men.
Dolph doesn’t have a PhD no idea why this is being repeated
What he really needed was to do a movie with Bolo Yeung about two ex-henchmen who are tired of working for some old cackling dude and try to make it on their own.
https://youtu.be/y0WOTplwNlwTarantino was a production assistant on his workout tape lmao
>>223603472gaylord
>>223603541Sorry it turns you on but there's no need to tell us about it
>>223603434This, it's actually a doctorate in rocket surgery.
He's just not very interesting to watch, he cannot carry a movie. He's a born secondary character. I've only seen him alone in that sniper movie and somehow he felt like a background entity in the movie he was the main character of
>>223603256Arnold chose good roles and Sly is actually a good actor. Dolph had neither of these advantages.
kek first arnold and sly, now dolph. did all of them get diddled by jewish producers?
>>223603256oil drillers were frowned upon in the 80s
>>223603256He's ugly as shit and foreign.
>>223603434He has multiple high level degrees, just not PhD level.
No presence, no clear identity
All the buff foreign main roles for the best movies went to Arnold, so he had to be in low budget ones that weren't any good.
>>223603402>>223603424>I look like an nazi's wet dream>I'm rich and famous>I also got into complex scienceDude made bank and then proceeded to do shit to feel like he's better than everyone else, while also having a somewhat normal, somewhat private life. Can't blame him.
>>223603256There was no room for them. Sylv and Arnie were already established so big budget projects favored them. Plus they had that friendly rivalry going on so there was no room for third wheels. Lundgren and Sorbo, which were next on the list thrived on different industry trends. Lundgren basically took the direct to video movie market and Sorbo took syndicated television. At that point in time actors just didn´t jump between mediums. A listers were A listers, B listers were B lister and TV stars were TV stars.
>>223603256He was too high IQ to mimic what midwits call charm and charisma, he focused on higher ideals and pursuits, faking to be one of the mortal mouth breathers would have smothered his soul.
>>223603256He's nowhere near as likeable or charismatic.
>>223603424Like Angela Merkel did?
>>223603256Americans hate aryans
>>223604309He was in a relationship with Grace Jones.
>>223603256absolutely trash filmshis only good films from that era is red scorpion and showdown in little tokyo but that movie was good because of brandon lee not himeven that retard Seagal made better films
>>223604739red scorpion is shite
He was just budget Arnold. With absolutely none of the charisma.
>>223604884It's good compared to other Dolph films which are trash
>>223603256It was a weird relationship where the audience had soft animosity towards him due to envy so he was good at villain roles and I'd argue that's when blonde men started being typecast as villains
>>223603256Dolph is like Tony Jaa -- it's a language thing. Tony Jaa was a modern day Bruce Li, but muay thai. He made some incredible martial arts films and choreographed all of the stunts. But his English fucking sucks.
>>223604127This, he has no aura compared to Arnold or Sly
>>223604108Any monkey can get a masters degree
>>223605321His problem is that he got nothing but aura
>>223605321>No aura>Landed multiple roles with very few lines because he looks like an arno breker sculpture So many levels of wrong to this post.
>>223603256>Stallone and Arnoldarnold could do serious/comedy acting. stallone too. dolph is as wooden as a table. having a good body doesn't equate to success. ask victoria justice.
>>223603782This. I'm tired of faggots fanboying about his degree whenever you ask about his acting. Probably the same anons who obsess over Keanu eating a sandwich
He lacked a defining role that would make him an A-lister.Sly had Rocky and Rambo.Arnie had Terminator, Predator and Conan.Once the "brand" of an actor is established they can choose similar roles or subvert expectations and do something unusual.Dolph never firmly established his "brand" by an iconic role. His way of acting is also too wooden. Both Sly and Arnie had good comedic timing so they could expand their range quickly, but Dolph is much more limited.
there was no coming back from this. universal soldier and expendables almost kickstarted his acting career but he doesn't sell tickets alone. he isn't a leading man.
>>223603424>Sorry Hans, your chemical engineering scores may be off the charts, but there's no room for you in this or any other university because Dolph Lundgren took the last spot, looks like you'll have to go become a streetsweeper or maybe just kill yourself . . .What fucking world are you living in, dumb fuck?
>>223603256Didn't have the charisma.
Dolph is an odd one. He had the look, height, and muscles, but didn't have the screen charisma to be a box office draw like Arnie, Sly, Seagal, and maybe even JCVD. That said, I do like: >I COME IN PEACE >SHOWDOWN IN LITTLE TOKYO>UNIVERSAL SOLDIER <--he was terrific in this>JOSHUA TREE>THE EXPENDABLES.
>>223607358Wow thanks for being the 20th person to say that
He got dog walked by JCVD in Universal Soldier & that was a wrap
>>223608105Welcome.
Is it the guy that won a Nobel prize in 2017? Good on him to leave acting I say.
>>223605749exactly. he LOOKS good but he doesn't have any kind of natural presence. it's about the way you carry yourself.
>>223604739>that movie was good because of brandon lee not himits not good its literally a higher budget unfunny version of samurai cop and lee cant act for shit.
>>223603256>Stallone and ArnoldHe wasn't even on jcvd or seagal level
>>223603360absolutely based!
Lundgren is a lot like Chuck Norris and Michael Dudikoff. He was a martial artist, and he had the physique. He also had the same problem as those guys: Lundgren couldn't emote to save his life. Plus he probably had poor representation and couldn't get the right meetings to advance his career. With that said, his portrayal of the Punisher is the best performance of his career.
I recently watched Red Scorpion and The Punisher. Dolf gave the exact same flat performance in each film, and there was no sense of him playing a character. He didn't really have a screen persona either. If you were asked to name some of the distinct qualities of Dolf's acting style, what could you say?
>>223603256He was pretty wooden and lacked the sheer charisma needed to be a star like Arnold, Sly, etc. He was good for cold stoic roles like Drago but bad for everything else. Even Van Damme was funnier and had more screen presence than Dolph.
>>223611421I think his monotone delivery works in his favor at least in The Punisher. He's playing a guy who watched his family die in a bombing. Too many actors try to play Frank Castle as some kind of street-level James Bond or as a tragic Gothic figure. Realistically, he would just be an emotional husk of a human being. Lundgren's robotic line-reading makes a weird sort of sense. Even the few quips he cracks sound like a killing machine trying to approximate a normal human.
>>223603360>>223603397a master's in chemistry IIRC
>>223611837I suppose you can interpret it that way, but you're being very generous in doing so. I'm no expert on The Punisher, but I did read the entire Garth Ennis run on Punisher MAX, and also that comic where Kingpin has an enemy's wife gangraped by homeless crackheads, I forget what that one was called. Anyway, based on the stuff I've read I've always thought of Frank as an extremely angry and hate-filled character. He doesn't yell and roar, and he doesn't say much, but there is always a perceptible rage simmering beneath the stony exterior. That's what I'd want too see in a screen adaptation, and Dolf's emotionless zombie shtick just didn't cut it for me. I also disliked his rhyming thespian sidekick - is he a character from the comics?
>>223603400Americans used to look like Dolph before you guys let spics in
>>223603256He's not as good. He had a nice career, though.
