Is it irredeemably bad or entertaining slop?
>>223603450it was unordinary. all I remember is the cool ship and falling asleep at everything else
>>223603450Both, I guess. But only if you're in the right mood.Main problem: too many protagonists with too many awesome powers. These things never work because you have to ignore most of the special powers most of the time just to make a plot and some suspense.
>>223603450>Van Helsing>League of Extraordinary Gentlemen>Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow>Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)All kino BTW
It was good, but where it failed was the "WE GOTTA STOP WW1" plot. WW1 happened, so the audience knows they failed from the moment it is revealed, which makes everything pointless.
>>223603450I really like it. Nemo's tech was great, team was interesting played by good actors, it was fun.It gets a lot of shit, but it is one of those movies I always let play when it pops up on telly. Only part I didn't like was Venice, because that was really ugly, looked like PS1 level design.>>223603450
>>223603450i remember enjoying it
Worth it for Mina’s tits and Invisible Man hijinks.
>>223603657that sherlock holmes sequel had the same plot and it was good
>>223603657A Game of Shadows did this too.
>>223603450Eh somewhere in betweenIn 2004 it was indeed irredeemable slop. But in hindsight it does some good and some bad. The opening scene with the start of a 1890s world war is kino. And it makes 200iq decisions like including Dorian Grey but then does retarded shit like making Moriarty the phantom of the opera and making Jeckl n Hyde HULK
>>223603699>>223603698Game of Shadows has the exactly same problem, and just like League it sucks the wind out of the whole movie. They want to have a bunch of cool WW1 weapons, have an evil war profiteer, but forget the basics of writing like avoiding a shaggy dog story.
>>223603450I think it's better than the comics. It knows how to have fun with the concept better, and the new characters and the updates to the old ones make them more fun and likeable. It would have been cool to get a sequel with John Carter and The Tripods.
>>223603702>it's bad because it's true to the source material
>>223603719Hollywood seems allergic to making a good War of the Worlds movie.
>>223603725There are tons of absolute iredeemable dogshit source material, like the Boys, or current Marvel run. It says nothing about quality.
>>223603743You didn't like Cruise one?
>>223603450When I was an edgy teenager I found it lame and I wanted it to be like the comics. Then I realized the comics are nothing but degenerate garbage and the movie is better than I thought. Entertaining slop.
Am I remembering it right that Dorian Grey infiltrated the team and seduced Mina Harker, who is a hot vampire girl in this version? I need to rewatch I remember thinking this had better action scenes than the X-Men movies back then too.
>>223603794The problem with the Cruise one is that it is set in the modern day and completely changes the origin of the invaders, which misses the entire theme of the original story.War of the Worlds is about the hyper-evolved Martians escaping a dying planet that they had formerly been total masters of. They choose as the target of their invasion Victorian England, which was not only the preeminent power of its day but also just beginning to mature in the field of sciences and war. The Martians are not inscrutable, they are entirely understandable and even defeatable in some instances like the Thunderchild. The Martians are basically what Humanity will end up like if their current course of evolution continues, at least according to Well's theories on evolution.Cruise's movie portrays the aliens as some unknowable ancient threat, and the end reveal that they are venerable to bacteria is without setup and makes no sense in context. HG Well's Martians are venerable to bacteria because they cured all illnesses on Mars centuries prior and lost their immune systems as a result. Cruise's aliens are venerable to bacteria because "that's what happened in the HG Wells novel". It was a movie made by retards.
>>223603725>true to the source materialThat's the one thing you can't really say about LoEG movie, there's not much in common between it and the comic.
>>223603657No, it was a good one. They had to stop "the great war", not a literal WW1. The prospect of a "great war" used to be an unthinkable boogeyman that could devastate the world, in the same way like a global nuclear war was imagined in 80s.The great war is going to happen one day, the point is to delay it (until britbongs can make a profit from it)
>>223603450>ww1 was a false flag>"why this movie did bad"?>>223603657i don't think they were ever meant to stop it just don't keep making the same mistakes. like connery's character says in the end "may this new century be yours, son, as the old one was mine." you keep fighing wars or chose exile somewhere like he did in africa.
>>223603725It's not. And it's a good thing, because that's the source material: everybody is a hypocrite, criminal, drug addict, miserable degenerate, faggot, or everything at once.Everything Moore has ever created is filthy. You see a "based" scene here and there and then you realize it's there only to make the characters look bad for the libshit reading it. It's a fantasy world where the WW1 has never happened, and this faggot focuses on poverty porn and no respect for women.Burn it all.
>>223603450Connery passed up the role of GANDALF for this shit. Not even joking. He was the first pick.
>>223604290Thank fuck.
>>223603630Only Van Helsing and Sky Captain are good
>>223603725>>223603776>>223604289IIRC the creators of the film bought the pitch from Moore before the comic was even finished. They're two different projects entirely with the same premise and title. That said I would have been happy to see what they did with the next LoEG book (or even more down the line).
>>223603865They could have made some effort to make it the kind of allegory for colonialism, making it about contemporary American/western adventures abroad.
>>223604290Good for him, imagine spending two years in New Zealand for a kid's movie
>>223603450you may not like it, but this is what soul looks like
>>223603450>Is it irredeemably bad or entertaining slop?A pleasant coincidence: I was going to post in this thread but it just closed. >>223597496I saw this movie, in theaters, and remember neither that scene nor even that character. Interpret that however you will.
>>223603450It's fun as long as you ignore the incredibly retarded plot
>>223603865I see, thank you for effortposting.
>>223604987I prefer leftist imperialism and colonialism critique, like the damage and the aftermath of Soviet Union.
How did Sean Connery manage to fuck up all his casting decisions in his late carreer? Passing on Gandalf, making this, The Avengers
>>223603450Certainly not as bad as a final credit than orson welles' (fucking transformers anime)i never managed to finish this because i first watched a fan redub. Basically all centered around trilying to recruit sean connery to do a low budget movie, and how all the other characters are pointless because nobody cares about them if sean connery is in, and all pointing out the ridiculous bullshit that happens tonthem while they recover the movie fron the bad guy. Seriously one of the funniest fan dubs i ever sawcarlettofx is a fucking genius
>>223603450fun and entertaining, but a bad adaptation of the source material.in the end i think it was way ahead; hollywood hadn't nailed the superhero formula back then. In a paralel reality, getting this movie in the 2010s instead of early 2000s would have made it big>>223603865just erase the "tripods were buried here millions of years ago" thing and it improves greatly. apart from that it's a pretty good movie,
>>223603725Alan Moore is a faggot and so are you. His “Source Material” is a bunch of other peoples characters he stole and bastardized so “source material” is a fucking meaningless statement in this case
AUTOMOWBEEEEEEL
Its okay. Then you read the comic and understand why people hated it.
>>223603725It is absolutely not true to the source material, in the comics Mina's the leader and she has no superpowers besides being a proper cunt who refuses to take shit from anyone then Moore has her spend every book after the first one either getting raped, addicted to drugs or involuntarily committed for the most part
>>223604289It is kind of funny that he builds Mina up as an unironically good strong female protagonist only to then turn later stories into Mina's Misery Porn Hour (guest starring Allan Quartermain and his sidekick, Opium).
>>223606406Connery would have been a terrible Gandalf.
>>223608535>guest starring Allan Quartermain and his sidekick, Opiumkek
>>223603857Kind of, I think they already had a past relationship which he uses to betray them. Mina being a hot vampire girl is about all I remember from this film though.
>>223603450Just bad slop. Mr. Hyde doesn't even rape anyone to death.
>>223609631>the ultimate stage of being a simp
>>223609631The dinner scene that follows is kino
>Sean Connery turned down Lord of the Rings for this
>>223609724>hyde, you appear to have something on your shirt
>>223609766[exasperated yelling from adjacent room]
>>223609631the league of SUPREME gentlemen
>>223603450it alrightkind of movie you watch to pay attention once, after that you just use it as background noise to fuck tocar was cool though
>>223603450it was and still is entertaining slop. just one of those ones you can throw on and laugh at how stupid it is and still enjoy it.
