I hate the discourse around this movie. A lot of Godzilla fans really think it's worse than all the terrible Showa schlock just because they don't like the design of Godzilla. Now contrarians are saying it's the best Godzilla movie ever. I'll take it over the whole Showa era except the original, but there are still several better Godzilla movies ahead of it.
