I know /tv/ is allergic to any form of genuine analysis and discussing black movies is basically impossible here but here goes:Picrel is basically a perfect movie up until the last act when Raheem (boombox guy) straight up tries to murder Sal in cold blood and then has him resisting arrest which leads to him being choked out, Lee always frames this as "people be caring more about property than the life of a black man" but said black guy was shown to be in violent rampage mode and his death was a direct result of that, all you had to do was have him get into an altercation with Sal and have the cops gun him down because of a racist misunderstanding but the way it plays out it's pretty much his fault, disappointing when Spike's point could've been made so much better. Still peak cozycore and maybe the best hangout movie ever, 9/10
Not everyone is the same, OP, but Spike Lee is not "one of the good ones" and has even stated that burning down Sal's place was "the right thing."So, when you see that the film was made by an idiot, you can see why it makes no logical sense.Peace to all.
>>223608008Kys no one likes this nigger movie for niggers kys niggerlover
>>223608063I'm aware of his statement but I'm also aware that some people don't understand their own movies a la George Lucas so I just take what's in the film itself
>>223608063Do people like you never realize what would have happened if he hadn't smashed the pizzeria window? Way more people would have died.

>>223608008if you want to get good black discussion you need to make a stealth wire thread that wont attract the shield or sopranos posters and then you can get a slow burn going and can discuss some hood shit
>>223608094>some people don't understand their own moviesIt's his movie, so I take Spike Lee's retarded word for it over my own. Same with Lucas, even if I fervently disagree with him many, many times.>>223608096Anon, what if you ate grapefruit and chocolate cake for breakfast?
>>223608123
>>223608123Haven't seen The Wire but probably true, same with Boondocks>>223608158So if The Matrix directors go back and say The Matrix was a trans allegory all along you'd suddenly dislike The Matrix?
>>223608193>So if The Matrix directors go back and say The Matrix was a trans allegory all along you'd suddenly dislike The Matrix? No, I still like that original film and not its sequels very much, but if that's what they say it means, then that's what it means. I disagree with them to enjoy the film in my own way, but I am officially wrong, if not unofficially correct.
>>223608217>I disagree with them to enjoy the film in my own wayWhat the fuck does this even mean in this context? I disagree with Spike about his take on the riot then, but you can see how this is going to circle back around in an endless feedback loop because you've had to make meaningless semantic differentiations to avoid basically saying "just believe whatever bullshit an artist says about their work after the fact and don't let the actual art speak for itself bro"
>>223608276>What the fuck does this even mean in this context? It's fairly easy to understand and I was quite clear, but to clarify, when I watch "The Matrix" it is literally about mankind's enslavement to computers. As for Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing", I accept that some people enjoy it a lot, but I don't, so I don't watch it past that one time many years ago.>>223608276>you've had to make meaningless semantic differentiations to avoid basically saying "just believe whatever bullshit an artist says about their work after the fact and don't let the actual art speak for itself bro"I did no such thing, but yes, a creator's word on their vision of the art they created does beat out outside opinions. We can choose to take them at their word, or not, it's that simple.
>>223608374>a creator's word on their vision of the art they created does beat out outside opinionsIt's a nice platitude but not logically sound esp for something like film that's such a collaborative process that often things emerge that weren't necessarily intended by the director, in the case of DTRT it'd be Sal's character having way more dimension and sympathy cos of Danny Aiello's acting and shit he improvised into the script. Some movies have more than one director, whose word do you take if they disagree about something in the film? See how this train of thought just doesn't hold up?
>>223608451It holds up fine. Poltergeist was directed by two directors, with just one getting official credit because of a union dispute and ongoing strike, but the ultimate narrative IS owned by the guy who officially did NOT direct it.
>>223608063fpbpSpike Lee is one of the dumbest motherfuckers I've ever seen, heard, or heard of but he's a master of the ancient African art of coming across as smart just because he's relatively calm and composed.
>>223608495Was referring more to films with more than one official director, you can't logically solve that dilemma through your worldview. All you're really saying is "the director's intent is the director's intent" and asserting that intention holds some inherent abstract objective value and in that case there's literally nothing I can do to argue against it
>>223608573To add onto that I'd also point to instances like where Abel Ferrara was allegedly high on crack for the majority of the time he was directing one of his films (I forget which one) and somebody else on the crew (the lead actor I believe) took on much of the directing duties, there's so many variables that throw a spanner in the whole reductive "the creator's word is the be all end all" schtick
>>223608573>Was referring more to films with more than one official directorOK, "The Wizard of Oz" wasn't a dream to me, but officially and according to one of its directors, it was a dream, the Oz part anyway. That film came from a book where the Oz part was not a dream, yet the filmmakers changed it.My point is that you cannot win, or lose, this "argument". I mean, you are arguing like it's set world history, when it's simply narrative fantasy and which one grabs you the most.
>>223608677>My point is that you cannot win, or lose, this "argument".No I can't argue that an artist's intent is an artist's intent, my whole point is that this doesn't hold the value you think it holds and it basically shouldn't factor in to how you recieve a film
>>223608770>my whole point is that this doesn't hold the value you think it holds and it basically shouldn't factor in to how you recieve a filmI said the same thing to you in different words.Recall that I mentioned that I disagree with what "The Matrix" is officially about, but I recognize that technically, legally even, I am incorrect in that case.
>>223608811And I said early on you're making meaningless semantic differentiations which is true and I rest my case Peace to all.
>>223608008I watched it recently and it came off as one, if not the most, anti black movie I've ever seen. The entire neighborhood is portrayed as a bunch of bums bitching about the hand they were dealt and why they deserve things.
>>223608851>And I said early on you're making meaningless semantic differentiations which is true and I rest my case>Peace to all.Don't act like you're me now. lol Nice try. I accept your "concession" thoughbeit.
>>223608901Spike Lee is not self-aware is why the film is like that. And that's taking him at his word. So if you disagree with his own take on his own art, then it makes less sense and can be seen as anti-black.
I do agree with Lee, Mookie forcing the neighborhood to burn down Sal's was the right thing at that moment. However we most definitely disagree on why exactly the neighborhood got to the point where redirecting the violence towards the pizza place ended up being the right thing.
>>223608939It highlights the whole contradiction there is in the black community where simultaneously "getting out the hood" is a noble goal to aspire to, but they also romanticize said hood because it's at least THEIR shithole and ethnic enclave
He was fundamentally, objectively and philosophically right to ask this question
