The Witch part is whatever the fuck, it's the complete dread of knowing you're lost, it's your own damn fault and there probably isn't going to be anyone rescuing you. That's the scary part, because it's 100% relatable. Most of these found footage movies ignore that bit. OOOH SPOOKY GHOST and try to jump scare you. And it's something these "atmospheric slow burn" pretentious pieces of shit forget to get right about their atmosphere.

This was 1999, with the internet being something for college kids, business dudes or upper middle class types (I miss when the internet was largely white so fucking much bros), so we had no real way to verify if the BW was even real to begin with. Nowadays, everything would have been leaked and debunked almost instantly. We were kids, and didn't know better. So we just assumed it was a real documentary, since the developers nailed that early mid 90s aesthetic. So going into that, we had that expectation of a spooky ghost story. That amount of effort just isn't going to happen nowadays.
