When I saw the start of Vertical Limit I thought it was a comedy. In particular the shot of the ground with the long pause and then the person just lands SPLAT. I mean how can that possibly be anything but funny?

As I watched I only very gradually realized it was meant to be serious.
>>
>>223636373
In the theater this scene was emotional and no one laughed. For a moment I thought that was how they were going to kill Leia and then she was alive and using the force at last. Me and my friend cheered. In retrospect it does look a bit silly but after Carrie’s death this scene was powerful. But when Admiral Gender Studies came on screen some guy couldn’t stop laughing and multiple people laughed at the “saving what we love” scene.

It's not often you can pinpoint the exact moment a billion dollar franchise dies
Most of them just fizzle out
This scene was a gift
An actual middle finger to the audience

Despite not being visibly physically injured, she's in the hospital wing, is clearly traumatized, and when Ron makes a "clip-clop" sound to fuck with her it scares the hell out of her. What do you think the implication is? That the centaurs politely explained to her that they are in fact sentient beings and maybe gave her a pleasant lecture about the contributions their race has made to the field of divination?

>All six of them looked around. Professor Umbridge was lying in a bed opposite them, gazing up at the ceiling. Dumbledore had strode alone into the forest to rescue her from the centaurs. How he had done it — how he had emerged from the trees supporting Professor Umbridge without so much as a scratch on him — nobody knew, and Umbridge was certainly not telling. Since she had returned to the castle she had not, as far as any of them knew, uttered a single word. Nobody really knew what was wrong with her either. Her usually neat mousy hair was very untidy and there were bits of twig and leaf in it, but otherwise she seemed to be quite unscathed.
>“Madam Pomfrey says she’s just in shock,” whispered Hermione.
This is the only mention of the attack on Umbridge in the books anon, there's 0 subtext of rape that isn't firmly planted there by your own projection or fantasies. At worst she got threatened and laughed at by centaurs as they took her on a joyride of the forest. Next time you make some bullshit claim, have the decency to provide a citation that backs up your argument so that anons don't have to do the legwork for you. Fucking nigger.

Killing them only to see that everyone is saved moments later is retarded and doesn't tie into anything in the story.

>It would have been better had no monster come to kill him and the movie ended with him walking into the mist.
that's how the novella ended and it was fucking lame and boring. the twist of salvation being seconds away, but right after he mercykilled his entire family, and the despondence that causes is why the movie twist is so good. despair and hopelessness were central themes in the movie.
>>

I'm the one that wrote that posted with the spoiler.
I didn't really feel like despair and hopelessness were central themes of the movie.
They always had a next step, something to work towards.
I felt it was more about how people dealt with fear of the unknown.
But regardless, the ending simply felt like misery for the sake of misery.
The military suddenly arriving and the mist clearing up, seconds after he kills everyone just feels contrived.
It didn't make me despondent as much as it made me think "what a shitty ending".

The worst part is that with a couple reshoots they could have killed her off in that moment and used it as the inciting incident for the suicide maneuver, while including more than just her in it. With Leia dead, you could convincingly say that several people would willingly commit to a suicide attack, which allows you to make it so that the only way to do the hyperspace ram maneuver is for a bridge full of people to constantly override safety protocols and manually calculate the trajectories. Instead of just saying "It's a one in a million shot" in the third movie, Poe could get angry with someone suggesting a suicide maneuver that sacrifices a dozen or more lives.

nta, you can't imagine something worse than a talking to that isn't rape? How would you feel if centaurs abducted you, took you through a forest with no end in sight and you had no idea if they would harm you or not? Umbridge already has a pronounced phobia for all non-humans so it isn't a stretch of the imagination to think a few hours of close proximity and subjugation to a centaur pack could have mindrbroken her.
Rape doesn't happen in the books (besides Merope and other love potion/spells I guess), but even if it did the centaurs wouldn't dare for fear of the reprisal by wizards, they're barely tolerated and only there because Dumbledore allows it in the first place.
>>
>>223647579
Being grabbed and rushed through the woods, not knowing if they're going to kill you or who knows what, is traumatizing enough for some one as uptight as Umbridge.

I agree with you fellas that that's more than likely what happened in-universe, and probably the answer Rowling gives if asked, but centaurs are creatures of Greek mythology, an influence on Harry Potter, and we know what they did to abducted women, so it's very easy to draw the conclusion of rape

It was kind of freeing, honestly

TLJ and HBO Watchmen came out around the same time and both were so bad that the part of my brain that participated in "fandom" broke irreparably, in that moment I just stopped giving a shit about "a new [blank] movie/show!" coming out

My default opinion went from "we'll let's give it a shot" to "it's probably shit, we're not wasting our time until someone I can trust says it's not shit, THEN maybe we'll give it a shot".

In terms of sheer potential revenue destroyed there's an argument that TLJ is the most powerful piece of film ever made.

Removing the contrivance of the military arriving and the mist clearing up less than a minute after he kills everyone is merit enough.
But, him walking into the mist and the movie ending ties into the theme of mystery and the unknown.
They were stuck in a grocery store with giant glass windows, in the day, and they still couldn't see past the mist. They didn't know where it came from, what in it, and so forth.
The movie would end on the same note, we don't know where the mist ends, we don't know what will happen.
Just as the characters can't see past the mist, we can't see what will happen past the ending.

Raffey Cassidy in Tomorrowland. It's again, contrary to the OP request, meant to be intentionally comedic because her character is a robot and unharmed by being hit by the truck; the movie itself is a Disney action adventure comedy. i'm not sure what else you expected from a stephen king story. and horror is an inherently shallow genre. the only thing "deep" about the horror genre is the dicking that women get afterwards from their partners because the whole point of the genre is to get them horned up; fear and arousal share the same brain pathways, and the response is notoriously strong in women.
>>
>>223648526
>are both of their egos that high?
well, yea. their careers are based entirely on being hyper macho. dwayne johnson literally has a clause in his contract that specifies that he can't be depicted losing a fight. vin diesel has a similar clause stipulating that he can't be shown taking too many punches or being excessively injured in fights. many "protagonist" action stars have clauses like these.

Her usually neat mousy hair was very untidy and there were bits of twig and leaf in it, but otherwise she seemed to be quite unscathed.

that's pretty good. Aside from the visceral emotional hit of the ending, I thought the mom had the right idea and was happy to see her have a good ending. I'm not usually big on "Have a little faith ;)" morals, but I thought it worked very well, and in the end the mist is just full of weird animals, the real monster was man. That works for me. It left me thinking and got me something to chew on, and honestly what I'm left with now years later is that you shouldn't give up hope. If he had just walked into the mist I don't think I'd be thinking about the movie still.
>>
>>223648016
Not that Anon but
Thematically it underscores that man has no real eminence over nature or reality.

The mist can easily be a stand-in for an unknown territory. Humans think they're hot shit but when it comes down to it, they're nothing but a blip.
After they die off an life resurge, I hope that somehow future species find a way to turn human based fossil fuels into something undignified.

For me, it's the son just driving home and going to bed afterwards. I know, I know, trauma and shock and whatever, but it's like, one traffic stop away from being a Scary Movie bit.

Pretty much every part of The Odyssey that wasn't just plain dull, but the part with Circe felt exceptionally ridiculous. Matt Damon's expressionless acting faced against the witch's pseudo-feminist rant that segues into a passive-agressive lecture about how he's actually an innocent good boy who dindu nuffin'. It was just hilariously baffling.
There's also that one part where Calypso is trying to get him to stop eating the lotus flowers, when Odysseus says that he loves it in the tone that a toddler would use talking about his favorite animal. Such a stupid movie, straight-up impossible to parody.

Prequel fights are blatant choreographed shit with all the goofy ballerina twirls and obvious aiming for the opponent's blade rather than their body.

Harry Potter is such a retarded franchise. The books are genuinely stupid. Instead of fucking learning shit like math, science, literature etc like normal, the students study combat, potion making and other retarded shit. It would make more sense if Hogwarts was sort of a military training school, instead of a damn high school. Their “studies” also makes them functionally illiterate.

nigger you have no arguments besides 'oh she's a bit ruffled, that HAS to be rape because centaurs in 100bc fairy tales', don't pretend this is some obvious thing I'm disregarding in favor of some childish view.
Also 'you'r' ? wtf you can't just split it halfway because you can't decide which spelling is right

I always assumed they had regular academic classes that just weren't mentioned because they're boring and not relevant, just like every character's sleep, eating, and bathroom habits aren't mentioned unless it's directly relevant to the story.
