Only Hollywood managed to pull that feat to make them lame and not scary. To be physically active 24/7 is almost impossible and even the mundane thing like going out to find food and drink is a life threatening task. But hollywood refuses to address these things and would rather film the characters talking about their feelings instead.

How long do the zombies live? I have a couple months of food at least.
Oh no I ran out of food... I get in my truck and drive to the store. The zombies slowly walk towards my truck while I drive down the street. I get scared and drive into a telephone pole for no reason. I limp out of my car and crawl into a shopping mall and meet up with some other survivors who are initially weary and distrustful of me. Oh fuck I am in a movie.

I don't think your car can overrun like, 90% of the human population. Gasoline will soon runs out and the meat with bones stuck on the tire will soon damage it. Yeah you can survive the day, but can you survive until you die of old age? I doubt you can even survive a month if it actually happens.
>>
>>223646937
no, clubbing people with sticks is basically just subhuman. zombies are weaker, slower, dumber, etc. the hillbilly jamboree in both NOTLD films demonstrates this completely. the ONLY threat to humans in those movies is other humans. voodoo zombies are even shittier. you HAVE to turn zombies into something non-zombie to make them the slightest bit threatening.

Zombie apocalypse wouldn't even be an apocalypse. Zombies would atrophy quickly and be non-threats. local law enforcement could almost certainly keep the situation under control. in fact, arguably blacks would still be more of a threat.
>>
>>223646944
I guess the notion of zombies is much older than Caribbean traditions. It should start with necromancy. The oldest superstition I know of would be the tophet mentioned in the Bible
>>
If you wanna take this realistic approach to zombies, they'd all be dead/immobile in a few months as their muscles rot away and they get eaten by bacteria/insects/other animals.
The fun of movies is suspending your disbelief.
>>
>>223646919

>zombies are weaker, slower, dumber, etc.
And they are immune to pain, including their horde mentality. Classic zombies are high in numbers. Beside zombieland, most of zombies in film are very scattered. You can bash 2 or 3 of them but higher numbers than that is a problem. And unlike them, your superior human physique gets tired, thirsty, hungry, needs to take a shit and so on. Drama based zombies like The Walking Dead just convieniently ignored these issues by giving the characters random safe heavens with barrier so they can spend 20 minutes talking about their feelings.
>>
Movie zombies are pretty clearly based on European folklore. Haitian zombies are created by voodoo priests sprinkling drugs on people to make them slaves. European revenants or draugr is where we get the zombie. Back from the dead, physical, rotting, stalking villages at night draining blood and spreading diseases. The only way to kill them is to decapitate or remove and burn the heart etc. That's a Euro zombie.
>>
An old conception of a zombie would be the original vampire or draugr. An evil spirit possesses a corpse

>walking dead
idk i read the first issue of the comic and then watched the first ep of the show and they were both exactly the same and boring.

as for high numbers and immune to pain and human stamina that's not even an issue because cooperation. its the one thing that is guaranteed to solve all zombie problems and that is almost never attempted in any zombie movie. two guys on opposite sides of any one zombie? instantly dead zombie. to gather food or build a shelter 3+ people guaranteed to succeed and so on. but if you go to the fast zombies then youre fucked no matter what. they might as well be rabid dogs.

how come we have to treat zombies as some magical force, and not mobile flesh hungry corpses, while not treating everything else with cinema flare?

Zombies not having the mobility or muscle mass to literally do anything DOES matter. They wouldn't even be able to bite after a few days. Zombies are cucked out. They're only a prevalent threat if you treat society, humanity, and literally any protective force as some sort of incompetent retard convention.

Zombies are usually created by science but for all intents and purposes they're more supernatural than scientific as they don't actually require food and water to survive (they just eat humans for fun basically or to ease their pain) and can only be killed by destroying their brains. 28 Days Later is the only movie I can think of that tried making zombies actually grounded in science and that was thrown out the window in Years with the virus acting like super steroids making humans as tanky as rhinos.

>Maybe the virus spreads from the disease and not bites?
I believe most of zombie films implied that the virus spread through either air, food or water which even the law enforcement and military caught it too. The surviving human simply partially immuned and it takes a zombie bite to make the infection more violent and weaken the immune system.

Tbh I liked Boyle's film more than Da Costa's. Bone Temple legit has less zombies in it but people were so mad that Years didn't focus on Aaron Taylor Johnson for more than 30 minutes and the Power Rangers finale that they lie constantly about that movie and pretend Bone Temple has more zombie scenes in it. It's like nobody remembered Spike had a Power Rangers toy in the beginning of the movie or got that it's his coming-of-age story which Bone Temple completely neglected to follow through on after Spike gets initiated into the Jimmies gang.

>how much action is too much action for horror?
I don't think it's as simple as that desu. At what point does action go from tense but exhilarating to tense and scary? Because there's a pretty big difference between Aliens/Predator and something like Die Hard/Speed, and I think that if action can be tenseless and funny ie. action comedy, then it can also be tense and scary because they're just different ends of the spectrum where action thrillers sort of occupy the middle. Chase scenes like in a slasher movie is probably the easiest example of a scary action scene but what about when characters fight back against the threats can it still be scary then?

I think almost every action scene in Aliens is scary, whereas in Predator the first big action scene against the guerilla camp is obviously exhilarating, but everything involving the Predator is scary.

I'd say the original Die Hard is actually a bit scary at times because John McClane is just a regular guy and he has to hide and sneak around taking each terrorist out one by one unlike the later movies but it's ultimately still firmly in the thriller territory, but what about The Raid then? The director conceived it as a legit martial arts horror flick and it is scarier than Die Hard even though it also gets categorized as an action thriller because it has human enemies so I guess monsters make a pretty big difference for people, and it further illustrates the issue isn't actually whether or not the protagonist is powerful or weak either.

Iko Uwais is very strong and capable in the movie, a lot more than John McClane in Die Hard, but he visibly gets more and more exhausted and actually slows down as the movie progresses from the constant fighting and stress from hiding and he is vastly outnumbered in most of the film. He's so exhausted by the end he needs help from his obviously weaker little brother to take on Mad Dog whereas I think he could've probably solo'd him in the beginning and won.

That's why the most kino zombie plots are like Resident Evil. It's a bioweapon that changes a bunch of people suddenly and or you're in a remote location far from home with no resources or backup and all of a sudden you encounter a bunch of zombos. NOTLD kind of works because cars and houses had shitty thin windows back then and cars were pretty damn unreliable and a lot of people didn't even have them.
>>
>>223648455
Movies aren't real life though and your argument is precisely why zombie media usually skips past the beginning of the apocalypse to when nearly everyone is already dead or infected. We don't need to know the finer details because of suspension of disbelief so instead we get hints at how it could've happened through witnessing the downfall of the survivor groups in the movies. I don't even think it's that far fetched that humanity goes extinct to a zombie apocalypse considering how the Covid pandemic was handled by both civilians and the government. Humans are largely dumb selfish and emotional creatures.

>>
>>223648566
Well the point was "they aren't just scary in movies"
But they are only scary in movies
In real life, more people would die in arguments over who gets to kill the one zombie they found than would be killed by zombies themselves, because thanks to media and common sense, the average person's first reaction to seeing a visibly dead person stumbling around would be kill it without hesitation
>>
>>223648555
Resident Evil works more because the zombies are a side effect of the virus, accompanied by much stronger bioweapons that were designed to fight elite military units. The files in Resident Evil 2 where the cops talk about how fucked they were when they ran into the licker solves the problem of "how could everything collapse just because of some zombies?" The zombies just complicate things and screw the general public up, while the armed forces crumble to stronger monsters
