Sometimes it was showing a character, usually Don, driving around looking pensive. Sometimes it was via adding in a nonsense scene like that one. Once commercial breaks are removed, episodes were generally around 47 minutes. Removing opening and closing credits brings that down to 45 minutes. If it had been on HBO instead of AMC, they could have shifted things around to make tighter thirty minute episodes or a smaller number of hour long episodes, minus the fluff.
