modern most common name is probably "cinematic universe" which does not mean multiverse. it's more about seemingly unrelated movies coming together at some point and becoming entangled.
spin offs aren't same thing at all. it's more that this movie was succesful enough. we take character or whatever from it and make movie.

on other note there were those cw comic book tv shows where some of those were actually set in different universes. making it multiverse but from what i've heard people usually call it arrowverse
