A pg-13 stop motion portal fantasy that’s 2.5 hours is having a hard time finding an audience? Imagine that.
>>
>>223694483
Tbh I've always been disappointed leaving theaters for a Laika movie. They tend to have a 3rd act problem and 2.5 hours isn't a good sign for this movie
>>

there’s not enough 13 year old fantasy white girls for this anymore try again in 2003

Who cares? Laika's films are never profitable. This film isn't even being released by a major distributor.
It looks awesome.
>>223694568
It's not what a movie is about it's how it is about it.
>>
>>223694568
It's based on a novel that I would not call particularly generic. It certainly has its inspirations and trops, but if they stick to the source material it could be pretty damn good.

PEOPLE WHO WANT STOP MOTION WANT STOP MOTION,
the trailer looks all cgi. It’s the worst of both worlds, not cgi enough for cartoon phyicsmbut doesn’t have that realistic real-life-prop stop motion feel.
Also the plot is so over baked, it has no center hero or antagonist is it the girl or the boy in the trailer that is the hero? The villian is “the forest”?

>>
If you want to put asses in seats, you do at least two or more of the following:

- aggressively market the movie (moreso if it's not from a major studio / not starring an A-Lister)
- have it be femslop (not FEMINIST slop, I mean movies that females ACTUALLY want to watch such as Amy Schumer-tier romcoms or stuff like 50 Shades of Grey where a woman gets her ass beat and her cunt fucked by Chad Thundercock)
- have it star exclusively A-Listers or be directed by someone like Nolan
- appeal to men (hot babes, not woke, violent if it's an action movie, etc.)
- be from a major studio
- appeal to children (actually funny, not woke garbage, etc.)
- from a mainstream or widely known IP

Some overly long, obscure shit starring what appears to be 2 female characters, from literal whos (Coraline was made what like 20 years ago now?) is going to be DOA any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

>>223697271
My jap friends call it ugly. I don't think it'll be very good or make much money. Shame as they love coraline
>>
>>223694803
I'm sure they want the film to be profitable of course, but at the end of the day, the Knight family is so wealthy that a $100 million dollar movie that doesn't even break even probably isn't a big deal (plus regardless of initial box office, I'd imagine that quality, family friendly animated movies have fairly long lifespans, not to mention merchandise sales).
>>223694523
The only Laika movie I've seen was Coraline. Been a while since I watched it, but I remember finding it odd how partway through the film it felt like it turned into a videogame-style fetch quest. Maybe that can be blamed on the book, which I haven't read.
>>
>>223694483
All the characters are ugly as fuck
>>
Based on the trailer it looks extremely derivative and the main character looks like some homeless crack fiend.

Not a good mix.
>>
>>223694483
The issue, as with everything, is that kids aren't naturally drawn to animated movies anymore, and parents simply bring them to keep them quite and doze off for a couple of hours. However, they will only choose the mainstream and easily recognisable flicks, and something like Wildwood seems unpalatable for a parent to babysit their annoying ipad toddler.
Conversely, while many adults are fond of animation, the percentage is extremely low, and most people above 14 years of age automatically think all animated movies are just for children. Meaning, a way too large chunk of the non-parent demographic just dismiss all these movies on a whim.
Hence, this project was doomed from the start
>>
>>223694483
I was genuinely excited. new lakia movie it’s fantasy about forest. the name sounds cool, it’s a bout a race of giant eagles? Ok….. then the real trailer comes out, it’s some narnia bullshit about evil queen and animal people. My desire to watch movie dropped like a stone. It’s actually based on a novel? That’s lame I thought it was a whole original universe invented by lakia. i shan’t
>>

>>

>>
>>223694803
The reported boxoffice figures are before the theatres and distributors take their cut. Kubo did not generate $77 million for the studio. It sold $77 million worth of tickets across the entire planet. The budgets also do not account for promotional spending. Just the cost of making the film.

Coraline is likely the only one on that list that made money theatrically.
>>
>>223694483
i'm not fallin again for anything from Laika, fuck off and shut down your shit company nepobaby
>>
>>223695188

>>
For a company that does such an excellent job at keeping stop-motion animation alive and they put so much effort into it they sure pick the dullest stories. Or rather not specifically dull, but each time after the initial premise of the story hits the rest of the movie just meanders around going through uninspired motions.

The Coraline book was so much better than the film adaption at least plot-wise. I agree the movies pacing did feel streamlined and weirdly gamey, along with the overall tone being more lighthearted and quirky. From what I remember the book was still eccentric but much more somber feeling. For instance the brown kid who befriends Coraline was completely created for the film adaption, in my opinion his inclusion greatly diminishes the solitary feeling of the story while also ruining the original final climax.

If you have no fucking clue who Laika is and can barely remember Coraline, it just looks like fugly CGI with a girl that looks way too young to have eyebags.
If they're going to do plain stories like >>223698497 said, then they really have to sell it on the premise of why it's a special kind of ugly.
>>
>>223694483
Should do a live action fantasy movie where the buff male hero has to have a sword fight with some wacky stop motion monster
(or adapt some fantasy book...I really don't know any good ones to pick)
add some 1980s electricity special effects too
>>
I picked up the Wildwood book in the library once, looking for something for my kids to read. Couldn’t get past the first page. It’s girlboss feminism all the way down. Kind of hilarious they made the characters ugly, too. Wouldn’t want any “male gaze” ticket sales to prop this up!

Why the fuck do all cartoons flop unless they're furfaggot bait (The Bad Guys, Zootopia) or a sequel to some ancient shit. Toy Story 5 made like a billion. How many modern kids actually know about fucking Toy Story? It's ancient history by now. But it still makes money. I thought it's mostly soulennials and older zoomers who make that bank, but you'd think they would also pay for this kind of hipster movie but apparently not, they only care about sequel slop. Despite the fact that everyone seemingly shits on sequels and remakes and whatever. There's an entire fucking world we don't know about. This movie was all over social media with people saying how kino it looks but apparently it was not a signifier of anything. Why the fuck are so many psyops ran online there if everything here is fake and actual normalfags are actually somewhere IRL outside the internet?

True, Laika is a Nepo Baby Bitch passion project.
Not True, all animation is done in house in Oregon. It is not outsourced to some animation studio in some developing nation.
Fun Fact: Phil Knight's kids first Nepo Baby Bitch passion project was, he tried being a rapper. and daddy paid for all the studio time and CD production.
Also,
Laika was originally, Will Vinton Studios and through some fuckery, Phil Knight acquired that company and it morphed into Laika. Now, to be fair, Phil Knights kid did start at the bottom at Will Vinton Studios, but he sure got prompted pretty quick.
Another Fun Fact:
All air bags that go into Nike Air shoes are manufactured in Oregon. Every Single One. They are then shipped overseas to factories and the rest of the shoe is produced there, then shipped back to the USA and the rest of the world.
The other soles on Nike shoes, that are not Nike Air, are manufactured in Vietnam.

Freaks don't understand that people go to the movies to look at attractive characters.

If it wasn't for the Knight family's money, Laika would've been shutdown years ago. Coraline was their only real hit.

Why would anyone watch a stop motion film when CGI does the same thing better
>>
>>223712202
you meme but there really is no appeal to stop motion for general audiences. its just cgi but choppier. most dont care about the actual artform used to make the movie
